Title: CA 62 and US 95
Post by: Max Rockatansky on April 15, 2018, 04:53:23 PM
Put together an article today on the alignment histories of CA 62 and US 95.  Unfortunately I haven't taken photo albums for either route but they both came up as subjects in a 2016 cross-country trip.  Odd to consider that the little stretch of US 95 north of I-40 to Goffs Road was once CA 195 but also US 66.

And that the section of US 95 from Goffs Road north to the NV state line was originally SSR 195 but ever-so-briefly part of US 91 prior to US 95 being commissioned over that route plus the remainder of SSR 195 down to Blythe.  US 66 originally followed the Santa Fe (now BNSF, of course) main line that paralleled its Goffs Rd. alignment before the cut-off that's now part of I-40 was built in the '30's.  The commissioning of US 95 came at approximately the same time as that of US 395 to the west, which subsumed both the northern part of original SSR 7 but also the original SSR 95 between US 66 at Hesperia via Kramer Corners to Inyokern.  For the first quarter-century of the CA state highway network, the designation of the desert arterials was constantly in a state of flux until the U.S. highway system essentially "maxed out" right after WW II.

The best evidence I ever could find with US 91 ending in Daggett was on the 1926 state highway map which shows state maintenance ending there:

By 1928 the state maintenance had shifted west to Barstow to 1st Avenue.

The funny thing with US 66 is that least to Fenner to don't believe it ever ran on the BNSF dirt roads next to the rails.  Pretty much every map shows the road going north of the tracks via Cadiz Summit from 1926 onward.  Interestingly the 1924 and maps prior to it show the Old Trails Road crossing from the south side of the tracks to the north somewhere around Essex.

Made an update to the CA 62/US 95 blog with greater graphical fidelity (with the map scans) along with new photos of CA 62 east from I-10 to Park Boulevard in Joshua Tree:
