Still nothing for I-90 at I-290/IL 53, but the I-88/I-355 interchange will be getting some work.
Unbelievable that the 90/290/53 interchange isn't on the list

so they want to keep the old plazas? Tear them down and let the ORT gantries do the work

They're being somewhat inconsistent with some of the plazas. Not entirely sure why. They rehabbed the NB one on the Tri-State near the Wisconsin state line earlier this year.

Others are being removed and replaced by monotubes. There is one such plaza that I know is due to be replaced as their plans have been given to us to insert on one Tollway contract.

I suspect that one's too big of a fish for this sort of MYP. But I agree that some Phase I stuff could've been funded through this, at least to get the ball rolling if it hasn't already.

I cannot figure out why they have not removed the old cash lanes at the mainline plazas. Now that it's all "I-Pass or Pay Online", they serve no purpose. I've heard it said that some need them because of nearby exit and entrance ramps and weaving areas but that's a chicken or egg problem - it's the presence of the old cash lanes creates the problem; get rid of the old cash lanes, send everyone through the open-road lanes, and you get rid of the weaving problem.

I would hope that a few of them could be converted for trucker parking since the Oasis ramps even while being rebuilt always have trucks parked on the shoulder. Give them a few extra spaces at 159th and 82nd in both directions I'm sure would be great. 82nd SB may have a tolled entry through it from 88th Ave whenever that finally gets finished

Cermak will be interesting to see what they do since it's been a lead up to Roosevelt/I-290 NB and Cermak/22nd SB. Touhy/Irving Park as well

They have to get IDOT onboard for that one.  IDOT does not play well with others.

can they cover 100% of the cost? They may want IDOT to pitch in for work on the free I-290/IL-53

ISTHA is doing work on 290 for the 88/290/294 interchange upgrade as part of the Central Tri-State rebuild. That means it can be done...

It is in ISTHA's interest to cover the cost. 290 EB/SB is the feeder to both 355 and 390 and is even signed as such. Plenty of ISTHA's regular customers (commuters) would greatly benefit from dumping this cloverleaf

Illinois's first 4-level stack would go well here. Yes there are the apartments at the NW corner of the interchange RoW that may make things challenging

New signage is up on SB 294 just before the new I-490 exit. One sign for I-290 and the other blocked out for the new County Line Road exit. Some of the new Smartroad gantries have also been turned on between O'Hare and North Ave with new gantries getting installed between I-55 and 95th St.

Nothing else notable on my brief trip the other night

A new lane shift on SB 294 between St. Charles Rd and the Cermak Toll. The two left lanes now express the I-88/290 JCT while the two right lanes remain on the new ramp.

If you stay in the far left lane, you get back to back express lanes from St. Charles Rd and 47th Street with a quick merge back at the Cermak Toll.

Serious question (and an ignorant one because I don't know the ramp traffic counts or any other data):  Since there currently are separate C/D lanes in all four directions, is a stack or other design with flyovers really so high on a needs list?

The C/D roadways carry 28k NB and 39k SB, each loop ramp is over 10k AADT with NB to WB having 18k. Well beyond cloverleaf capacity. The EB to SB ramp narrows to a single lane after the toll plaza with 24k AADT (magic number is usually 10-15k AADT/ramp lane for higher speed ramps). INDOT is widening a pair of ramps at I-69 & I-465 from 2-3 lanes at 30k and 39k AADT, so a multilane flyover is definitely warranted at 18k

The NB to WB ramp backs up so badly at times that NB to EB is impacted. When we lived in Roselle, we switched routes to avoid the 90/290 interchange during December due to the seasonal added Woodfield Mall traffic making it even worse.

Simple answer is no. The 2 busiest movements for the cloverleaf are I-90 EB to I-53/290 and I-290/53 North to I-90 West. However, on both the c/d lanes for I-90 and 53/I-290, there are other factors in play.

For I-90 EB to I-290/53, there are the toll plazas. They have yet to remove the old style plaza to I-290 East despite it being an I-Pass only plaza now. So traffic does have to slow down there. Plus there is a massive amount of traffic that does exit at Woodfield and Higgins creating a weave effect.

Going north on 53/290, the ramp to I-90 West is a tight single lane loop with a 30 zone. That ramp always backs up because of the loop.

Would it be possible to reconfigure the interchange into a stack interchange without taking up too much space? Another option might be widening all ramps to two lanes.
