This is the season when travelers can take back their transportation system and use it for fun rather than just for the drudgery of commuting. Here are some driving and biking routes in the D.C. region that I've collected from guides, travelers, transportation groups and personal experience. You can reach them via some well-worn commuting paths.

A lot of routes lighten considerably here after July 4th, but seemingly less this year for me.  Friday afternoon rush definitely starts (and ends) earlier.

In DC, the main commuter and through routes tend to be lighter during the summer, with two major exceptions:  50 east towards the Bay Bridge, and 95 south, which is a clusterf*ck regardless of day of the week or time of year.

There's even a bike route that'll jam up during the summer, especially summer weekends:  the Mount Vernon Trail north of Old Town and through Arlington.

Had a nice drive in the old Cutlass ragtop down Rt. 42 between Woodstock and Timberville Sunday, maybe saw 10 cars in 40 mi.
