History of state roads in Orange County, FL

At least in Orange County, plats were filed in the official records for all roads transferred from the state in accordance with Florida Statutes 337.29 (1977), which reversed the 36-year trend of system growth. Because Orange County's official records are online, this makes it easy to see what roads in the county used to be state roads. Maps were also filed when the state took over the roads, but years are a bit sketchier, so not all years listed below are necessarily correct.

I've started adding section numbers in bold; you can search for these in the 'both names' field on http://or.occompt.com/recorder/eagleweb/docSearch.jsp if you change search type to wildcard.

Note that the numbers given are not always the final numbers, since often the same maps were used for the earlier acquisition by the state.

I also found some notes I took about ten years ago from records at the Orange County Public Works Department.

Right now they have the road books arranged strangely. Later ones are "right of way map" (specific types above the search boxes) book 2, but earlier ones are plat book 13.

I have always wondered about S-428 after seeing it on only one printed map (so far).

What about S-446?
So many roads...so little time.

The Orange County Property Appraiser (or whoever they get their shield data from) calls it CR 428: http://paarcgis.ocpafl.org/Webmap3/default.aspx

What about S-446?
Hmmm - I thought I saw a plat of it a while ago but it doesn't seem to be in the list I compiled. I remember there was a sign for it on Vineland until about 2000.
I do have a note that it was removed from the state secondary system at the monthly FDOT meeting on March 27, 1975 since it was entirely within Orlando city limits. In 1973 Orange County was required to pave it per an agreement with Orlando wrt Valencia College, so S-446 had a rather short life.

I'll have to go through these notes I just rediscovered in more detail. [edit] done.

As a sort-of aside, here's an interesting map showing the former one-way pair around Lake Lucerne: http://or.occompt.com/recorder/eagleweb/downloads/27989298.pdf?id=DOCC27989298.A0&parent=DOCC27989298

Can you share a link to the old maps?
In addition to the links above, FDOT has scanned these for some counties: http://www.dot.state.fl.us/surveyingandmapping/rowmap.shtm
You can click through from the PDF to "transferred and old" for former state roads.

Making a note here that one set of plats shows University Boulevard as UCF Boulevard (SR 518). It's probably just an error (this part of University was likely SR S-436-A) but who knows.

Anything regarding the history of Park Avenue in Winter Park and Maitland? Was it somehow an old segment of US 17, or at least SR 15?

It was SR 3 (US 17-92), later SR 3-A. The new alignment was built in the 1930s, though the portion of Orlando Avenue north of Orange Avenue was already an improved county road known as "Orlando Short Cut".
