Payless Shoes (https://www.foxbusiness.com/retail/payless-shoesource-set-to-close-2300-stores-report) set to close all their stores.
I won't miss them much. I bought a pair of shoes there once and they were complete crap. We used to have 2 stores here: one in the mall, one in a strip mall across from Wal-Mart, but the strip mall store closed 4-5 years ago.
I will miss them, I needed a pair of sneakers that I could wear without wearing out my expensive running shoes and I found a pair for $12.
I did find their dress shoes to be utter crap that needed to be replaced every few months, but I don't wear dress shoes with any regularity any more.
Shoe shopping has always been a bit of a pain for me, I have wide size 13 or 14 feet, as well as one foot with a fallen arch and one foot with a normal arch.

Not surprised, haven't been in any of their stores in years. Have been to factory outlets and factory stores more recently and liked the selection there as well.
One has to wonder if Foot Locker and the other non-factory-outlet-type shoe stores will go under eventually. I've yet to go to Rack Room Shoes, however.

Yeah I never did like their dress shoes as compared to stores that had a better selection.

I have size 9.5 or 10 feet (don't know if I could fit into a size 9 again), and my feet are flat with little arches.

Probably not. If you have a common shoe size, it's much easier to shop in a brick-and-mortar store for new shoes than online. Zappos is as close as it gets to hassle-free online shoe shopping with their "free overnight shipping both ways" gimmick, but shipping shoes back and forth is a hassle.
Some folks are quick to blame this on Amazon, but I wonder if it's more from big boxes like DSW. After all, you can't try shoes on first, when getting them online (at least for now... who knows?)

This is true, but my dad has that figured out with little to no hassle.
It's reasonable why they closed. That can't make a profit because you don't need to pay to get their shoes.

Nope. All the price tags say "payless" which means they are free.

It isn't "pay less," it's "payless." This suggests that you can get shoes "paymentless" and that the business is "moneyless."
At another forum, people would call this sort of activity "threadmunching."

They don't loack a cost.
They lack a payout.

I think I bought a pair of shoes there or something once I think it was shoe laces now that I think about it but I won't miss this store much. There is one in Fashion Square Mall in Saginaw and the last time I looked in there most of their shelves were empty like they were getting ready to close for good.
Never went to their stores. Had one in Oak Lawn since I was born. Time for a better store to move in now

Their parent, a private equity firm, claims the company is deeply in debt. IMO, it sounds like another Fast Eddie.
Payless Shoes: Why pay more? Quality, perhaps?
They've been teetering on the edge of the cliff for months. Got one in my town in the same plaza that once housed a Radio Shack, Zayre's/Ames, and Fashion Bug.
If dollar stores are thriving, why wouldn't Payless also be thriving?

Not 20 years ago. I used to by shoes from them -- they had a great pair of simple brown casual shoes that would last a few years. Once they stopped carrying them, I stopped shopping there -- quality did take a nosedive somewhere in the early 2000s.

Local store here was very busy Sunday, the first day they had signs posted. It's not been busy at all since then. We'll see what happens this coming weekend.
Tangentially related, the local Rogers Jewelry has closed.. They've been going out of business since November. They were still open yesterday, but today they had signs stating they had closed.

Payless has been through Chapter 11 at least once already. Apparently they're going Chapter 7 now
