Title: Sports fans. What're your teams?
Post by: OCGuy81 on September 29, 2011, 10:38:49 PM
With the MLB playoffs kicking off, the middle of college football, and the NFL in full swing, it's a great time of year for sports! Love it when college football, NFL, and MLB all collide right now.

So who are your teams that you root for?

I'm a USC alum, so even with the controversy of late, I still say Go Trojans!!

NFL, I like the Chargers, and have an inkling they'll move to the new Farmers Field LA is building as they're likely sick of playing in the aging Qualcomm Stadium.  Still, fun to go to games. If LA got the Raiders back..... :banghead:

And MLB...big Angels fan.  Sucks they didn't make it to October this year.  Oh well.

This time of year it's all about college football and English soccer for me. Purdue, UCF, and Arsenal.

I'm a Cowboys fan, and tried to get into either the Bucs or the Dolphins when I moved to Florida, but the Dolphins aren't often aired in the Orlando market and the Bucs are always blacked out. As a result, I've pretty much lost interest in pro football.

Baseball puts me to sleep. If I'm looking to be bored, I'd rather watch NASCAR. Both are monotonous and repetitive, both take too long, but at least NASCAR has a chance for fiery explosions.

Baseball is an art.  Go Phils, go!

Excluding England teams (which are a given):
Soccer - Arsenal, Southampton, Watford
Rugger - Wasps
Cricket - Hampshire

I don't have enough access to American Football or a geographic location to have a team, though I do try and watch it when it's on. Baseball is dull - I'm sure the Brits/Irish chaps that invented it (you guys imported it from over here) just weren't artful enough to play cricket.

^^Baseball is not dull to those who understand it.  (Even a casual fan who was watching Wednesday night wouldn't have said that was dull.)  And [myth mode on] it was invented by Abner Doubleday,[myth mode off] who was later one of the defenders of Fort Sumter.  At least a match doesn't go on for days, with breaks for tea.  :-P

Washington Capitals (hockey is far and away my favorite sport)
Washington Nationals
Ferrari F1 team
University of Virginia football (I got my undergraduate degree from UVA)
University of Virginia baseball

Then a big dropoff to
Washington Redskins (once upon a time my favorite, but I just don't enjoy football as much anymore)
DC United

I don't watch the NBA when they're playing, and I don't watch much college basketball anymore either. If I watched college basketball I'd be watching UVA and Duke (I got my JD from Duke).

Not the Red Sox, this year. I have to throw out about 1 out of every 2 or 3 baseball seasons for spoilage, and it looks like this will be one of them. Fair weather forever :-)

I'm finding myself climbing aboard the Lions bandwagon. And even the Raiders are looking respectable :-/

I have to admit, there's been a surging interest in the NFL over the pond lately. Surprised how much interest there is for the sport at another forum I'm at (a 50/40/10 North American/European/Antipodean mix of users) compared to a decade ago.

Been a Dolphin fan since I moved to South Florida 1982. I was fortunate (or unfortunate?) to get on board when they were very good, and remarkably consistent until around 2001 or so.

Jumped on the NBA bandwagon around the same time, picked the LA Lakers as they were one of the few teams televised on Sundays. When Miami got the Heat in 1988, I got on what would be a very slow climb (albeit a realistic one) to success. I mean, in that first season, if they lost by less than 20 points, that was considered a good game.

Can't say I'm a big baseball or hockey fan; I've been to my fair share of Marlins and Panthers games, but it usually bores me on TV. Hockey is one of those events that TV rarely does justice to it. Baseball is fun to go to with a bunch of your buds and chit-chat and socialize. I don't know why, it's just more fun that way. Success is fleeting for these teams, and I think it's only a matter of time before the Panthers wind up in a more deserving city (they were a hot ticket from 1993 to 2000, but they literally give away thousands of tickets nowadays, and free parking too against some of the smaller-fan base opponents). I feel kind of guilty about not going to Marlins games; I've been to 8 games, and they've won every one of them.

I finished off my degree at the University of Florida and spent a few years at Florida Atlantic University, so I root for their teams, naturally.

As you might guess form my username, I'm more of an auto racing fan. I've always been a fan of automobiles and what makes them tick (thanks, dad), so racing just literally comes with the territory. (Maps, history, and exploration have always been rather interesting to me too, so being interested in some of the things related to this site just kind of "completes the circle", if you will.)

While I won't stay up to 3am to catch the end of the Japanese Grand Prix anymore, I rarely sleep in for most of the European rounds of the Formula One World Championship (kids have me up by 7am anyhow). Thank goodness the VCR was around when I started enjoying motorsport (around 1986, with a lot of thanks to ESPN's then-too-tiny a budget to afford major sporting events), as I'd tape everything on wheels for a while there. I kind of lost interest midway through high school in anything other than NASCAR and F1 racing (although for a while, I was hooked on the World Rally Championship), due to a lack of time to completely geek-out, not to mention, I was driving by then. But before the internet was became a mainstream media, finding a fellow racing fan was near-impossible; the advantage was that if you had to tape an event, chances were infinitesimal that someone would ruin the results ("Wow, did you see that race?!? Who would have thought Jean Alesi was finally going to win one?").

The funny thing about motorsports is that I don't have a my-team-is-the-best favorite, I'm kind of dispassionate in that respect; sometimes I root for a driver, but sometimes they're good, and sometimes they're not...and they're out of the limelight. But if a certain set of circumstances arises, then I root for a driver, team, or marque because there's something interesting about them (or maybe I drive one of their related products). Or the rare times an American is actually competing. I've kind of lost interest in NASCAR, what with the Car of Tomorrow, many of the drivers being less interesting than before — although this may be because the ones I'm used to have long since retired/died — and the regulations seem to be created and ignored on a whim, as if the rules exist only on a write board, but indiscriminately applied. Don't get me wrong, F1's rules are on the verge of silly; you'd need a degree to fully understand the FIA's Technical Regulations and Sporting Regulations, and they are no longer as classically simple due to exploitation by teams and drivers.

North Bend Bulldogs.  Oregon State Beavers.  SF 49'ers.  Oakland Raiders.  Those have been my teams to root for since 1967, when I got into sports.  Since then I've added the Portland Timbers to my list of teams I watch even though they play futbol instead of football.  The Timbers Army has the most spirit outside of the SEC.  My personal saying is, "There's two seasons...Football Season and Waiting For Football Season!"...LOL!

That's pretty cool.  Most Bay Area folks I know fall into one camp or the other, and it can be a rivalry.

Growing up, those were the two featured teams on TV every Sunday.  I liked the Raiders better since they were in the AFL but I also liked the Niners too.  My mother was born in SF and her mother was born in Oakland.

Nowadays the Seahawks have the priority for being shown and we miss out on a number of Raider and Niner games.  That sure hurt when Dallas played at SF earlier in the season.

I understand baseball very well (I have been watching it off and on my whole life) but I still think it's dull.  I do like attending games in person, but watching it on TV bores me to tears.

I'm a huge Arkansas Razorbacks fan.  I like college football and basketball.  I watch football for the Razorbacks, and for upsets.  I love seeing arrogant highly ranked teams get spanked by 3rd rate programs.

I used to like the NFL but I couldn't give a fuck about it anymore.  I haven't watched a game all year.

MLB:  I generally cheer for both the Astros and Rangers equally.

College football(actually all college sports)-Nebraska Cornhuskers(hence my screenname).
Nothing else even comes close for me, but I also have:
MLB-Kansas City Royals
NFL-San Francisco 49ers(though I'm starting to follow the Detroit Lions closer now because I have a sister-in-law from there and they have 3 former Nebraska players playing key roles on the team right now).

MBL, see my current avatar (BEAT THOSE F'N YANKEES!)  :pan:
NHL, Red Wings
NFL, varies between Lions (1), Bears (2), and Saints (3).  Currently it's the Lions since I don't need a paper bag over my head to watch them.
NBA, don't much care

College: Alma mater (MTU), then Big Ten (in order from MSU at the top to OSU and UM at the bottom, welcome to the Big Ten, huskeroadgeek - hope they beat UM, and OSU if they play them), then MAC.  SEC can suck it.

Considering that Ohio wasn't technically a state until 1953...and likes to pull over people for at the limit or slightly under...and let's not get into the police action at a certain U in the northeast part of the state in the seventies.  :pan:

nah, it has always been a state since its admission in 1803.

from Wikipedia:
QuoteOn February 19, 1803, President Jefferson signed an act of Congress that approved Ohio's boundaries and constitution. However, Congress had never passed a resolution formally admitting Ohio as the 17th state. The current custom of Congress declaring an official date of statehood did not begin until 1812, with Louisiana's admission as the 18th state.

therefore, by the customs of 1803, it was ratified correctly.

The Michigan folks are still bitter about Ohio stealing Toledo and moving the state boundary north a few miles.

Just west of Toledo and north of the Turnpike, you can actually see a road called "Old State Line Road". Notice that almost none of the north south roads are continuous across this line? And following a line west of the road when it ends, you'll notice all of the county roads have sharp bends. This is where the state line used to be before the "Toledo War" between the states.

After last year's Sugar Bowl, a lot of Arkansans have developed a new hatred for Ohio State.  I read some Razorback forums (some of the posters are cool, some of them are the biggest douchebags I've ever encountered online) and since the Sugar Bowl was announced there have been lots of posts slamming OSU.  The fact that they played players who were not eligible and the fact that the coach knew about it left a bad taste in Hog fans' mouths.

There is one major thing that is wrong with the Big 12: The University of Texas.  The Big 12 doesn't have equal revenue sharing like the SEC has, so UT gets a lot more money than the other teams.  This is why A&M bolted to the SEC: They wanted the equal revenue sharing and they wanted to make a statement to UT that Aggy doesn't need UT to survive.  They're nobody's kid brother team anymore, they're THE premier sports university in Texas.

The irony here is that the Big 12 took Baylor over TCU, and TCU, IIRC, is still pissed about that.  They bring in Houston, Rice, and SMU, and it's the old SWC all over again.

The irony here is that the Big 12 took Baylor over TCU, and TCU, IIRC, is still pissed about that.  They bring in Houston, Rice, and SMU, and it's the old SWC all over again.

Yeah, but TCU's good now...

MLB: since the Expos left, the Toronto Blue Jays
CFL: Montreal Alouettes
NASL: Montreal Impact who'll move to MLS for the 2012 season

NCAA Football: Oregon Ducks.
NFL: Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers (used to like the Seahawks, but stopped liking them once Pete Carroll took over as coach).
NASCAR: Marcos Ambrose, Brad Keselowski, Dave Blaney

Don't really follow anything else.

QuoteThere is one major thing that is wrong with the Big 12: The University of Texas.

Sounds like Texas is trying to fill the void left by A&M departing.  ESPN had a report today that TCU was in talks to join the Big 12, despite an unofficial agreement to join the Big East.  Frankly, Big 12 would make more sense givent their location.

The irony here is that the Big 12 took Baylor over TCU, and TCU, IIRC, is still pissed about that.  They bring in Houston, Rice, and SMU, and it's the old SWC all over again.

The Big 12 invited Arkansas to join a few months ago (they said HELL no) speaking of SWC teams.

I used to live in Arkansas, and for a long time I've been telling anybody who listened that Arkansas loved being in the SEC and had no interest whatsoever in the Big 12. Yet for some reason, a lot of people still thought they might go if asked. Why people thought Arkansas would join a conference full of ex SWC teams that they were trying to get away from when they joined the SEC makes no sense to me.

I hope so. There's not a huge amount of confidence among our fans right now-the negativity this whole week about last week's game has been ridiculous. I think we'll win, but I'm always one of the more optimistic ones around.

The MLB (Major League Baseball) 2011 season enters the playoffs, and the first round is historic...one for the baseball record books to generated some memorable moments. The L.A. Angels of Anaheim has their 10th straight winning season over 81 wins, yet came to an abrupt end at 86, only ten games unable to have a post-season...I'm really disappointed of them.

The Yankees and now the Phillies (image of Ryan Howard injured on his way on the final out of game 5) eliminated, so it's up to the Tigers and Brewers each advanced to their league championships. The Rangers repeated like I seen it comin' and the "Wild Cards", er Cardinals made it...the 3rd MLB post-season 1-0 score game in the game's history, thanks to the Cardinals' key pitchers: Chris Carpenter and Roy Holliday. My wife is rooting for the Cardinals this year, due to her hometown was St. Charles facing St. Louis (she loved the Giants last year, another place she lived at was San Mateo in the SF bay area).

The Rangers like the Cardinals have many fans in Oklahoma, while the Brewers face the Cards again, this time the same league. The 1982 Cardinals faced the Brewers when in the AL and in 2006 the Cardinals defeated the Detroit Tigers like in the late 1960's, but the Missouri "I-70" world series is a distant memory cherished by Kansas City Royals fans when their team had their only championship victory way back in 1985.

Renewed predictions: Texas triumphs over Tigers and the Cards corks the Brewers, expect the "I-44" world series in 2011. Interestingly, US route 66 starts in Chicago where the Cubs fanfare remains distraught to see regional rivals and the White Sox had better luck in the postseason. US route 66 crosses North Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona and into Southern California.

You could say 1996 or 1999. Actually, in 1995, the AL champions were the Cleveland Indians, not the Yankees. The Indians fell to the Braves in 6 games as the Braves got their first World Series in Atlanta, 3 overall as a franchise.

I never quite realized I never posted in this thread. Most people know I am not normal when it comes to location of residence vs. teams supported.

MLB: New York Yankees and Mets (nothing wrong with being impartial. Hell, when I went to my last ballgame, which was Mets @ Yankee Stadium 3, I was impartial the entire game. I forget who pitched for the Yanks, but I remember it being Santana for the Mets.) When it comes to the World Series, I will cheer for the opponents of the Rangers, Phillies, Angels and Red Sox. (I got a lot of looks for supporting St. Louis this last year.)

NHL: The Edmonton Oilers, don't have a reason, just do. (It's fun when your favorite team is the worst in the continent and yet your local team is in the Stanley Cup Finals.)

NBA: Don't follow much, but the Knicks all the way.

NFL: Ok, this is where I get the most criticism. I am a diehard New England Patriots fan, which usually gets driven in my face. No I don't have a love obsession over Tom Brady, who I personally think is overrated. I am a big Rob Gronkowski fan though. Starting last year, I've been a fan of the Detroit Lions, this is mainly because I am using their good team to piss off my friend of Detroit who I said would make the playoffs last year.

While those are the 4 mainstay sports, I have been a NASCAR fan for 17 years, and a fan of Jeff Gordon all 17 years. I do cheer on most of Hendrick Motorsports (pardoning Jimmie Johnson).

MLB: Seattle Mariners

NCAA: Ohio State Buckeyes
NCAA: Wyoming Cowboys
NHL: Colorado Avalanche
NBA: Chicago Bulls

MLB (AL): Baltimore Orioles
MLB (NL): Washington Nationals

NFL (NFC): Washington Redskins
NFL (AFC): Baltimore Ravens

NCAA: Maryland Terrapins  Not any longer - I will not support any team in the Big 10 - Maryland won't ever get any more contributions or other support from me. They are supposed to be getting a windfall from the Big 10, so they don't need my money.

NBA: No Preference (the Wizards (f/k/a the Bullets) have been so bad for so long that I have not watched a game in many years)

NHL:  No Preference. I do not care for the small(er)-rink style of hockey that is played in the NHL - consider that the Swedish Elite League (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_Elite_League) rinks are slightly wider and about the same length (60 meters (197 feet) long by 30 meters (98.5 feet) wide) as compared to the NHL's 200 feet long by 85 feet wide, which leads to a faster game with more emphasis on puck handling and less contact (though I realize that many NHL fans enjoy the heavy hitting and the fighting - I don't - that's what football and boxing are for).  Bad teams in the Swedish Elite League also have to face the prospect of getting demoted to the lower-level HockeyAllsvenskan league - an end-of-the season "playout" tournament, consisting of the bottom two Elite League and the top four Hockey/Allsvenskan clubs is held, and the top two teams return to the to Elite League next season, and the other four stay in the lower league.

EDIT:  No longer supporting my alma mater in any way shape or form.

College: Ohio State and whoever's playing against Michigan. Muck Fichigan.
Appalachian State and whoever's playing against Georgia Southern. I'm glad this rivalry is being imported to the Sun Belt, although I still strenuously object to the move. We should have just moved to a better FCS conference like the CAA.

Football: The Cleveland Browns and whoever is playing against the Ravens. (yes, I am from Cleveland, get your laughs out of the way now). And the Panthers to a lesser extent.

Baseball: Indians

Basketball: Cavs. Unlike with the Panthers, I've never adopted even a hint of loyalty toward the Bobcats. Similarly, I couldn't conceivably care less about Duke/UNC/Wake/NC State.

Well, I have a weird preference according to American standards.

Handball: BM Huesca. The team from my hometown, currently at highest division (which in Spain is the ASOBAL league). Season starts next Friday (BTW, our unlucky day is Tuesday the 13th, not Friday).

I've got tired of football (soccer), so I don't follow that anymore. As for basketball, well there is now the Eurobasket in play, and sometimes I check NBA, without any preferred teams but leaning a bit towards the T-wolves. I don't follow baseball, ice hockey or American football at all.

MLB: Red Sox (faithful follower since 1984, both sides of my family were, so it's Sox or black sheep status.)
NFL: Pats & Giants (I grew up watching both, and there was never a problem till SBs 42 & 46)
NHL: I've warmed to the Bruins.  I'll always be an orphaned Whalers fan, but will NOT follow the Whalercanes.
NBA: Celtics
College B-Ball: UCONN
Don't really have a favorite for college football.

NCAA: Maryland Terrapins  Not any longer - I will not support any team in the Big 10 - Maryland won't ever get any more contributions or other support from me. They are supposed to be getting a windfall from the Big 10, so they don't need my money.

Why the Big 10 hate? I've seen a good bit of friendly conference rivalry but I've never heard of anyone actually having a strong opinion about an athletic conference as a whole.

MLB: Boston Red Sox (Definitely NOT the New ¥ork ¥ankee$)
NFL: New England Patriots
NHL: Boston Bruins, Penguins as a 2nd because I like penguins (the animal)
NBA: Boston Celtics
NCAA: I don't watch college sports because they are not important

NFL:  Panthers. I'll be rooting for the Broncos (but not particularly against the Seahawks) in this year's Super Bowl.  Redskins and 49ers top the list of teams I almost always root against.

NCAA football:  Stanford (I went there), Notre Dame if they aren't playing Stanford.  University of Spoiled Children tops my rather short root-against list for the college games.

MLB:  mild rooting for the Nationals, ritual hatred of the Yankees and I don't like the Orioles either. But baseball is really an acquired taste for me, so I don't have the well-developed root for/against lists I have for football.

NHL:  I sometimes watch the Capitals when I'm really bored and nothing else I like is on the tube, but hockey isn't even at the "acquired taste" level for me.

NBA or college hoops:  near-zero interest, except mild interest in women's college basketball (a carryover from when one of my nieces grew tall enough to inspire basketball-scholarship dreams).

So the "12th man" or whatever things that the team themselves claim about their fans - that the fan aid them, is complete nonsense in your view?

Fans also are the money bags without which the team won't be as good (especially true in non-American sports without the draft system).

And there is the notion of champions and done-on-behalf-of - especially true of national teams.

I can say that we finally got an Olympic medal on snow (all GB's previous Winter Olympic medals have been in ice sports) yesterday, and the doubt isn't that I am claiming a part in Jenny Jones' bronze medal winning effort, but because of the feeling that we legitimately won the bronze that Alain Baxter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alain_Baxter) won for skiing in Salt Lake City, that was stripped from him.

I've tried to stop saying "we", and I still can't help it. Depends how strongly I identify with a team. Mostly the Rangers at this point, but it can sometimes slip out for the Yankees.

Maybe if they PLAYED, coached, had played, etc.  I live in Austin and we have to put up with all that stuff from a & m, along with all their poor sportsmanship.  Maybe I can say we for one of your English football teams like Hull or Manchester, etc.

Association Football: SD Huesca (currently in LaLiga2, 2nd tier)
Basketball, other than NBA: CB Peñas (Also in 2nd tier but in danger of relegation)
Handball: BM Huesca

(Now you know exactly where I am from :sombrero:)

MLB: Chicago Cubs. After two years loudly cheering for them here in the post-season, I guess I can say I'm a fan of them.

Obviously not becasue if I was I would have said they were my team and not the Colts. The Packers play 2 hours away in Green Bay that's too far away to be considered a local team. They aren't even the closest team. If they still played some games in Milwaukee like the used to then I could make the case that they do have some connection to our area. I also can't stand their GM Ted Thompson and never got into Aaron Rodgers though I did like Favre but those days are over.

I only really watch NFL football, and obviously I'm a diehard Vikings fan. The Chiefs would be my #2 (if I had to pick one) because, since I've moved to Iowa, they have a good number of fans here and the games are on TV here often enough that I can follow along. I don't care much for other sports but it can be assumed that if I did get into it, it would be whatever team is from Minnesota (Wild, Twins, Timberwolves, the Gophers probably for college, etc).

That's just a matter of opinion I don't see it that way. Then why are St Louis and San Diego fans so upset? Their state already has a team still and the Chargers didn't even move too far. If a team is not part of your community then you can't say they belong to your city.

See here's the thing....I just can't get into Soccer, especially the MLS.  At the end of the day the MLS still is basically akin to AA or AAA baseball.  Just like the Lansing Lugnuts, I'll go to a game if someone offers but at the end of the day I'll always been pretty indifferent.

Really what isn't helping Soccer state side is the huge option of alternate sports to view.  I played Soccer for a couple years in school, it is WAY more fun to actually play than watch.  I think the Simpsons described the Soccer viewing experience infinitely better than I can:

I can't talk to anyone I know in Orlando seriously when they always bring up the Lions since the star player is called "Kaka."  How does a dude with a somewhat normal but LONG name end up picking something like that as a nickname anyways?
Title: Re: Sports fans. What're your teams?

Brazilian and Portugese players have a fairly unique nickname system, since many share common surnames: http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/explainer/2006/06/why_ronaldinho_has_no_last_name.html

Many come from the favelas, or the slums, and thus gain the nicknames as a mark of pride that they don't let go of.

As for Kaka, who is a joy to watch despite what you think of his name, his nickname comes from the way his younger brother shortened his full name (Ricardo) when they were younger.

As for soccer being boring...to each their own. I can't stand stop-and-start action, as I can get easily distracted and bored, but soccer keeps me engaged with only one interruption. It's pretty valuable in today's world, to say the least.
