Is it time to think of a new rule limiting how often any single state can be used?

Given how slowly this thread actually moves, that seems awfully restrictive. The intrinsic nature of this thread never meant that it was going to get very far to begin with. I'd be surprised if we make it to 200 without backing into another corner, like we already did at 117.

OK. Then maybe some mechanism that allows for an "escape" when stuck in a particular area?

Anyone with half a brain knows it has to be a place where they serve piña coladas.

This thread will inevitably have to start over.  When we do, we can add a stipulation that the same state cannot be repeated within a certain number of plays.  (I'd recommend a number like 4 or 5.)  I'm not the boss here so take my suggestions as a grain of salt, and I'm obviously open to criticism, counterarguments etc.

NH → ME → oops

With 5: NY → MA → oops

Also, WA and FL each border two states only, so if OR/ID/GA/AL doesn't have the next number... also oops.
Clinched, minus I-93 (I'm missing a few miles and my file is incorrect)

Traveled, plus US 13, 44, and 50, and several state routes

I will be in Burlington VT for the eclipse.

All this weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth. Just play, folks. If we get into a corner, game over, and if someone wants to start a new game, that's fine. I personally see no need to tweak the rules.

We're in Virginia, so we can go back to Kentucky for 135.

As they say, a little less conversation; a little more action, please.

Back by popular demand!  It's Illinois!   Just because I'm aware of a couple options for 137 from there.  You want to take it to another area?  Nobody is stopping you...I just have every state highway in Illinois, so it's safe for me here...and I know I can depend on a couple people to keep giving us stuff from IA and MN. (and there is no IL-139)  Most states near me will die out before we get to 200--Indiana at 170, Illinois at around 180, Wisconsin at around 190.

You were just asking for this. :bigass:

(Sadly, both Iowa and Minnesota 139 do exist [same road, actually], but I have pictures of neither. :-D)

Glad to see Iowa adopting standard arrows, but I hate the wide three-digit signs.

Hey, what do you know?  I can post something from Minnesota this time.  (It'll require us to post IA-150 next but that's fine.)
