Pennsylvania abuses this, they love getting new signals without replacing the mast-arms. This is a dumb idea, since the old pole can snap.

In one corner of the intersection, you can modern TCT signals  mounted on a 1970s PennDOT signal mast-arm.
https://www.google.com/maps/@40.1537144,-75.1379035,3a,37.5y,2.13h,98.11t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1saEhXOiupJrJXTiVohIFMYg!2e0!7i3328!8i1664?hl=en&authuser=0
The original signals were 12" eagle flatbacks, I remember them from when I was a little kid. The TCTs were added in 2008.

The Willow Grove mall area has a lot of modern signals on old mast-arm. The first set of signals here, were Generation 2 durasigs.
The McCain signals were added in 2012:

Philly abuses this to death, you can find plenty of new signals on old mast-arms:
https://www.google.com/maps/@40.0621318,-75.1366333,3a,75y,199.11h,84.69t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sYhV0kHf9z0-GgXngnhsQzg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en&authuser=0
The original signals were HS&S signals

https://www.google.com/maps/@40.0547727,-75.1412225,3a,75y,254.09h,95.96t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sfJPtuoI_XQu45kTaf5E1Ng!2e0!5s20140801T000000!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en&authuser=0
Before these, there were 12" Crouse-Hinds Model Ms

https://www.google.com/maps/@40.0536579,-75.1414588,3a,75y,244.57h,87.96t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sIqSElDD5CsQaGb8LF3_fPQ!2e0!5s20150801T000000!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en&authuser=0
Crouse-Hinds Model R signals on the left (Original to the intersection), modern McCain on the right. The McCain signals replaced signals that had been mounted on the side of the pole.

Not sure of this one counts, but the signals on the mast-arm are all original,  the pedestal signals are roughly 20-25 years newer,
The overhead signals are Crouse-Hinds, and the pole signals are Eagle Mark IVs:
https://www.google.com/maps/@40.0536011,-75.1418263,3a,90y,109.39h,95.3t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1slWXhv5WpuilZJ4vAu1mxhg!2e0!5s20150801T000000!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en&authuser=0

The original equipment here was installed back in the early-1970s, all the old signals are gone, but two of the original 1970s PennDOT mast-arms stay in place, the only original signals left here, are two 12-inch Eagle flatbacks (See if you can find 'em):
https://www.google.com/maps/@40.1777191,-74.8849898,3a,26y,19.16h,92.46t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sTKhOPhq9fND9A7AdbwEMoQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en&authuser=0

The is next to the previous intersection, see if you can spot the last remaining Eagle flatback:
https://www.google.com/maps/@40.176694,-74.8847649,3a,90y,89.39h,99.67t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sWmQjK6qLN8-h1d_uezG8bg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en&authuser=0

The northbound and southbound 611 signals were installed in 2006, the east/west signals were added in Spring 2014:
https://www.google.com/maps/@40.1050799,-75.1249857,3a,75y,229.51h,90t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sU9y2AIKvk9APoSCU6Vkygw!2e0!6s%2F%2Fgeo1.ggpht.com%2Fcbk%3Fpanoid%3DU9y2AIKvk9APoSCU6Vkygw%26output%3Dthumbnail%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26thumb%3D2%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D221.85646%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en&authuser=0

All the safetran signals are original, with a few new signals that were thrown in in the mix, part of Jenkintown's 2010 signal project:
https://www.google.com/maps/@40.101799,-75.1258066,3a,75y,156.12h,87.85t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sEgBWvMtASDEwg2G2CaX4Mw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en&authuser=0

Kind of reverse here, we see two old 12" Eagle flatbacks on a slightly newer mast-arm. These probably used to be on an angled mast-arm:

Why did putting a new signal on an old arm make it more likely to snap? Aren't new signals typically lighter then old ones?

freebrickproductions

You see this all the time in many cities and towns, as it's much easier, cheaper, and quicker to replaced a signal or two at a time when one or more get hit rather than replacing an entire install due to a signal getting hit.
It's all fun & games until someone summons Cthulhu and brings about the end of the world.

I also collect traffic lights, road signs, fans, and railroad crossing equipment.

Around 2000-2005, VDOT's Northern Virginia region did this extensively, replacing older 1970s/1980s-era signal heads on span wires with new signal heads (Mostly McCain and NAI/Demco signals) on the same span wire equipment.  2006 and later, VDOT started an aggressive replacement of these older span wires with mast arms when new signal heads were needed to be installed.

paulthemapguy

Lol the nearest signal to my house has mixed equipment.  That's because they replaced failing parts in a piecemeal fashion, as people have already said.  At one time, there was one LED signal head at the whole intersection, while the rest remained with old-school bulbs.

Speaking of mixed equipment NYSDOT recently installed new signals at the intersection of NY252 and Brighton-Henrietta Townline Rd./John St. (In Rochester). Signals for three legs of the intersection are on mast arms and the signals for the fourth leg (John St.) are on span wire. What's up with that?

Jardine

I don't have any stats or anything, but I'd be stunned if a mast arm around here could stand for nearly 50 years without being knocked down by a tight turning semi, or clobbered by a DUI type, or zorched in a high speed chase, or damaged by a falling tree in an ice storm, or removed prematurely from a botched traffic count survey, or  . . .

:hmmm:
