Took a little trip out to Death Valley today and clinched CA 127 in addition to NV 373:

I'm anticipating being way behind on Road Blogs this week so I'll probably won't get to this one for a little bit.  CA 127 is about as lonely as a state highway gets in California.  Traffic doesn't pick up at all until CA 190 and State Line Road, I'm fairly confident Death Valley Junction is devoid of people now.

Finished up my road blog on CA 127/NV 373:

There is actually a ton of rail history associated with these roads regarding the Death Valley Railroad in addition to the Tonopah and Tidewater.  It appears CA 127 was signed back all the way during the initial run of state highways in the 1930s.   I was able to find a nice old map from 1938 in Nevada which shows the original highway numbers.

There's a road I'll likely never be on so I thank you once more Max for providing such a fine series of pix!  I wonder how much the CHP or county mounties patrol this route?  It would be so tempting to kick the rig up to 80 MPH out in the empty desert!

Rick
US 101 is THE backbone of the Pacific coast from Bandon OR to Willits CA.  Industry, tourism and local traffic would be gone or severely crippled without it being in functioning condition in BOTH states.

I sincere doubt they do with the low traffic count.  I've never even seen a CHP Office on 190 east of the Sierras.  Really that last leg towards the state line is where you can open it up.  Nevada definitely has it right with 70 MPH speed limits on rural two-lane highways.  Sure spooked my passengers, they didn't know those speeds were perfectly legal on the Nevada side.
