Title: Longest continuous mileage on one Interstate
Post by: Dough4872 on February 28, 2024, 11:54:30 PM
I wanted to see what is the longest continuous mileage between two points on one Interstate that you have?

For me, it's either I-81 between I-40 in Tennessee and I-78 in Pennsylvania or I-95 between I-85 in Virginia and RI 138 in Rhode Island.

For me, I think it's I-95 from Miami, Florida to Waterford, Maine; 1732 miles. I haven't finished a few sections in Maine.

Define "continuous".

In the typical parlance of our forum's membership:

1) a non-trivial, non-zero amount which doesn't include airport layovers nor use Clearview

2) any way you define it.

1072 miles on I-70, from Indianapolis, IN, to Denver, CO.
880 miles on I-90, from Rapid City, SD, to Schaumburg, IL.

I know someone already asked, but for a definition of continuous - are we talking on one trip? Or is this just an approximation of longest highway you've clinched?

I've clinched I-70, but I've never driven from Cove Fort to Baltimore.

If one trip, I've done I-80 from San Francisco to Cheyenne. (And, if I remember right, we have a thread for that )

Here's my records:

782 miles on I-95 from the I-4/FL 400 interchange in Florida to the I-95/I-395/I-495 interchange in Springfield, VA.
699 miles on I-70 from Breezewood, PA to St. Louis, MO.

I'm interpreting this thread to be most continuous mileage on a single interstate, which may or may not result in a full clinch.

At least my answers reflect that.

So it sounds like we have consensus on being just overall longest clinched segments, and not just on one trip. My five longest:

2,445 miles on I-80 from its western terminus in San Francisco to I-71 in Strongville, OH
2,385 miles on I-90 from its western terminus in Seattle to its split with I-80 in Amherst Township, OH
2,192 miles on I-70 from its western terminus in Cove Fort, UT to its eastern terminus in the city of Baltimore, MD
1,916 miles on I-95 from its southern terminus in Miami, FL to its its northern terminus in Houston, ME
1,368 miles on I-94 from MT47 in Custer, MT to I-69 in Marshall Township, MI

This is still a different topic than that (and you're just Bingo-ing a thread already linked to above by jlam.) This is "what's the longest line you have highlighted as a clinch on your atlas of travels", nothing to do with one trip or non-stop. I started a thread a while back which is kind of the opposite -- what's your longest untraveled segment on an interstate (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=33521).

That was actually your own tangent in that thread, which should have been separated out.

The thread's main topic was the longest one stayed on one particular highway in one trip per the table compiled in Reply 260...and the thread's own title...and OP...

So, more encompassing than this thread and therefore better.

So it sounds like we have consensus on being just overall longest clinched segments, and not just on one trip.

In that case, I-75 from Atlanta to northern terminus in SSM, approximately 1070 miles.

If you count as a passenger as a kid, I can add the length from Atlanta to Naples, another 600 or so miles.

(Yes, I know, I should look up the route logs to find out exactly how far, but I'm lazy and used Google Maps)

EDIT: This was in several trips over the course of decades, so it doesn't fit into the other 1-trip threads.
Title: Re: Longest continuous mileage on one Interstate

My intent of longest continuous mileage was the most mileage between two points along one highway. It does not necessarily have to be from one trip, can be from several trips that can combine for the continuous mileage. Also exiting the highway and getting back on at the same exit doesn't break it either.

Thank you for that clarification after the earlier confusion and responses.

I-80, 2730 miles for me, then.

Of course, we have people who have clinched most of the Interstate Highway System, so they'll have the big 'uns.

My criteria was continuous on a single trip, only exiting for food/gas/lodging.
Using that, I'd say my really long near-non-stop trips were all back in the 1990s. I didn't have GPS, or keep super-detailed logs in those days, but these were partly business trips, so I wasn't doing any sightseeing. They include:

December 1993, about 1815 miles on I-10 from Los Angeles CA to Baton Rouge LA
November 1995, the same trip in the reverse direction
June 1997, about 1540 miles on I-94 from the west end to Detroit MI
July 1999, about 2083 miles on I-70 from the west end to Frederick, MD
September 1999, about 1981 miles on I-80 from Davenport IA to the west end

Since those days, my driving habits and lifestyle choices have led me to avoid long trips on Interstates in favor of more exploration. The only really long drive I've done on one road in recent years was last October, exactly 1234 miles on I-40 from Little Rock AR to Williams AZ.

Since Dough4872 is the OP, I will use their definition of "continuous".  Mileage values are approximated.

I-90     995 miles    Tomah, WI -- Billings, MT     (one trip, but some segments were out of order, and some side trips off the route, so kind of iffy)
I-95     970 miles    Daytona Beach, FL -- NJ Turnpike  (combining multiple trips)
I-81     859 miles    entire route  (combining multiple trips)

Longest in a single trip
I-85     677 miles   entire route  (one trip)  Only exits were for food, fuel, lodging.

Here are two different lists from two different perspectives:

List one - single trip mileage:
1. I-26 (286 miles) WB from I-95 to I-81. Only exits were for state welcome centers and to eat.
2. I-81 (240 miles) NB from I-26 to I-64 multiplex end. Only exits were the VA Welcome Center and one gas stop.
3. I-95 (195 miles) SB from VA-288 to NC-53/210. Only exit was the NC Welcome Center.

List two - multiple trips adding up:
1. I-81 (296 miles) from I-40 to I-64 multiplex end.
2. I-64 (226 miles) from I-81 multiplex begin to I-264 (VA).
3. I-85 (155 miles) from I-73 to I-26.

Bold is top 3 most continuous mileage all time.

In that case...

I-35.  If you count both iterations of I-35W to be part of I-35, then I've got 1480 miles between Laredo TX and Hinckley MN.  If you don't count the I-35W stretches, then it comes to 1352 miles.

I-70.  Never mind.  I think I'm actually missing the bump in Kansas City.  If it weren't for that tiny bit, I'd have 1432 miles between Sevier UT and Effingham IL.  But I don't.

I-81 from I-40 in TN to I-66 in VA (376 mi)
I-84 [west] from Jerome, ID to Portland, OR (546 mi)
I-87 [New York / north] in its entirety (333 mi)
I-90 from Madison, WI to I-80 split in Ohio (451 mi)

Looking at non-Interstate continuous mileage...

US-277:  420 miles between Del Rio TX and Randlett OK (on one trip).

US-50:  I might have had 514 miles between Delta CO and Dodge City KS.  But I think I'm missing the bit in Pueblo that's bypassed by CO-47.  So that's probably a no-go.

Mine is I-95, but I'm not sure of the exact mileage because my records for I-95 in Massachusetts represent a best guess. The last time I was on any portion of I-95 in Massachusetts other than the very small portion between the northern end of I-495 and the New Hampshire state line was August of 1981, so I'm not positive exactly where we went and my Travel Mapping log is a guess (that, as I look at it today, strikes me as almost certainly incorrect—but the only other person who might know would be my father and he is no longer with us). So if I count from the southern end of I-95 in Miami to the Rhode Island/Massachusetts state line, I get 1,502.23 miles, and then there is some amount more than that in Massachusetts to the south of Boston and I just don't know how much.

I remember we stayed at the old Harvard Motor Lodge when we visited Boston on that trip and rode the subway from the old Harvard/Brattle subway station, so I ought to look at an old map and see if I can piece together what my father would likely have considered the most logical route.

Clinched over multiple trips:
I-5 - entire length, 1381 miles
I-15 - I-5 in San Diego to I-90 near Butte, ~1157 miles
I-80 - US-101 in San Francisco to US-40/189 near Silver Summit, UT, ~759 miles

Clinched in one trip:
I-5 - I-710 in Commerce, CA to I-405 in Portland, ~970 miles
I-15 - CA-91 in Riverside to I-90 near Butte, ~1,070 miles (done in one drive with stops for gas)

I have driven on all 753 miles of I-80 between US 183 neat Elm Creek, NE and the Business US 31 exit at Roseland, IN. However, if you count the miles I rode in a car as a kid, I possibly have many more on I-90. I did in July 21, I-5 from I-505 in CA to I-205 near Portland. Don't know how many miles, but I've done it.

I've mentioned before that I've done I-70 from KC to Vandalia, IL, which may not count as it's probably less than 300 miles and not fit into the criteria per OP.

1500 miles along I-40 from its western terminus in California to somewhere in Arkansas.
Distant second for me would be I-75 at 1,090 miles from Atlanta to the Canadian border.
