Title: This date in history...
Post by: hbelkins on June 22, 2020, 03:12:34 PM
On this date six years ago (6/22/14), the Alanland thread got locked.

Let us lament and not lament its passing.

This ... just ... keeps making me smile.  It takes religion, politics, non-traffic VMS notices, and Ala.nland–and rolls it all up into one nice little inoffensive package.

A part of me wants to call it sacrilegious, but then I remember how everyone always says "God has a sense of humor".  Well, if that's true, then there's NO WAY wouldn't be laughing at that sign.

We should unlock it, as there was no harm in keeping it around. I will say that we are better about not bringing up Alanland too much than a couple of years ago.

I respectfully disagree. That particular aspect of Ala.nland has always been one that I have tremendous disdain for, and if I ever were to stop coming to this forum, that would certainly be among the reasons why.

Somebody must have deleted a post. Probably the person that claimed it the second time deleted one of their own posts to bring it back down to 1999, and then someone has deleted a post since. You can delete posts even from locked threads.

Yes, it was proclaimed by the Eighth Grand Alan. However, there was no 8th Grand Alan.

Yes, it was proclaimed by the Eighth Grand Alan. However, there was no 8th Grand Alan.

Umm.  No.  It was proclaimed by the 8th Grand Alan.  There was no Eighth Grand Alan.  This was discussed in quite some detail in Bachrach's seminal history[1 (https://www.jstor.org/stable/10.5749/j.cttttz0w)] of the Alans.

The short explanation is that the 7rd Grand Alan was given a manuscript of a text originally written by Cardinal Alan Banastre[2 (http://www.1066.co.nz/Mosaic%20DVD/library/Battle%20Roll/battle_abbey_roll1/battle_abbey_roll1.html)] in the late 12th Century (13th Alanary), in which was found the following statement:

Quote from: Capras et putri, Cardinal Alan Banastre, ca. 1170, 2.144
Septem numere, si au numerele i eget velit congue vandenilis.[3]

Due to dialectical differences[4] between medieval and modern Alantin, the 7rd Grand Alan misinterpreted the text to be a dogmatic interdict barring the use of ordinal numbers, spelled out in full, for civil titles unless specifically approved by the Council of Alans[5].  He subsequently issued the Dukes and Alans Edict[6] (also known as the Alan Dukes Edict), which included an amendment declaring his successor to be known only as the 8th Grand Alan and not as the Eighth Grand Alan.

There are lots of reasons to have disdain for Alanland. The fact that it makes no sense at all should probably be high up there, right under the fact that they make all sports players wear ponchos as uniforms and the use of compressed Series E(M) for everything.

To answer a question nobody asked, one aspect of Alanland has actually survived into the present day. In my Dungeons & Dragons game, the capital city is named Quindaro, as a nod to Alanland's capital (not that anyone but me gets the joke). So in some sense, a small part of Alanland is still alive and well.

(Maybe some day I should make a thread about that. There are sign drawings, after all.)

Well, normally I would respond "guilty as charged", but I know it is important to keep a sense of humor, and I seem to manage to do so without much trouble. However, 2020 is nothing if not a year that's made me think I should be taking my faith more seriously, not less.

After the moderators locked the thread, people kept making Alanland references, to the point that at one time the moderators set the forum software to treat "Alanland" as a "forbidden word." I don't remember what the word that replaced it was, though, and I note that you can set the forum to leave words uncensored (which is how I now have it set, so I wouldn't see what the replacement was anyway).

Edited to add: I searched the forum for my posts containing the word "forbidden" and found it. For a while, the forum censored "Alanland" as "Magical Place of Destiny." There was a thread about it: https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=21384.0

I used to support unlocking the Alanland thread and banning discussion of Alanland outside of it back in 2017-18 but people are better now.

I used to support unlocking the Alanland thread and banning discussion of Alanland outside of it back in 2017-18 but people are better now.

Ah yes, the time I found a goat and a Keys Shield. A truly magical evening.

Please forgive me for being a jerk (noob question), but what exactly is Alanland?
I'm still trying to figure out that question myself.

That could be a legal and could be an illegal thing to do, except every other Saturday when the blue moon is full.

But it is and isn't mandatory during a Harvest Moon.

Harvest Moon is the official agricultural video game of Ala.nland.  The release version officially approved by statute (alan.alanland.gov/statutes/rev2010/sec2/hrc/408/ (http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/ilcs3.asp?ActID=1714&ChapterID=41)) is the 1992 single by Neil Young, and it is only approved to be played at 33 RPM, regardless of format.

And here I was about to make a Stardew Valley reference, but I didn't think anyone would get it.

Go ahead.  You might be correct.
