Title: No U-Turn on Dead End Street
Post by: TML on July 18, 2018, 01:43:15 PM
In my local area, I am aware of two dead-end streets where U-Turns are also prohibited. I understand this was done primarily to deter motorists from using those streets to turn around, but on the flip side, does this mean that if you somehow turn onto that street, you're screwed if you want to come back out?

How exactly are U-turns prohibited in these instances? Generally, dead-ends with a "no turn around" plaque don't have a specific cul-de-sac for turning around; the sign is simply warning motorists that there is limited spacing for turning around, not that U-turns are expressly prohibited.

If a "NO U-TURN" sign and an end of roadway object marker (OM4-1,2,3) are combined anywhere, that seems like a paradox.

I'm sure those signs are just as unenforceable as "NO THRU TRAFFIC."

I guess you'd have to go in reverse if you want to get out.  Of course, that would be quite dangerous.  Seriously, though, it appears "turn around" is used as a noun here, indicating that one doesn't exist.  It's not the verb, which would prevent U-turns. (Didn't mean to turn this into an English breakdown  :-D)

I'd interpret the second one of those as meaning the landowner doesn't want you using his driveway to turn around, so you have to do so before passing that sign.

That prohibitory sign appears to be a private install. It's just saying "don't use my driveway to turn around".

Like I was trying to say above, "NO U TURN" and "NO TURN AROUND" are not the same thing. "TURN AROUND" is a noun. "U TURN" is an action.

Same, and I'd interpret the first as that there's no designated turn-around area where the pavement is widened to allow for easier U-turns.

There's always (or at least usually) driveways to turn around in. Also, turning around in a regular cul-de-sac is conceptually different from a U-turn. 'No U-turn' probably means in effect 'no place to turn around'... as in you cannot turn around - there's no space - not that it's illegal, like it is in freeway median crossovers, but that it's actually not even possible.

I typed the above and then read the thread... basically, I'm with jakeroot.

Simply put, a sign reading "NO U-TURN" on a dead end street actually has a completely different meaning than the diagrammatic you see posted at a freeway median crossover. The former means, quite literally, "U-turn not possible" where the latter simply means "don't".

In case anyone needs further details/clarification, here is an example, as seen from Google Street View:

If there is no turn around that's strange that Google StreetView got all the way to the end of that road and up the driveway at the end.

Another thing, was that seven dead end signs I counted along that street?

I think it's aimed at trucks due to the truck stop at the interchange to the east.

Agreed, and the first one is definitely a warning sign, not a regulatory one.

The street view car apparently didn't get the message, and drove all the way up the driveway to the right.  :-D
