City Limits

I was noticing that in this map of the Atmore, AL city limits, there’s a part not connected to the main body of the city.  The I-65 and AL 21 exchange and a small area east of the main city are highlighted as part of the city as well.

Then you have in CA the neighborhood of San Ysidro that is orphaned from the rest of San Diego because of Chula Vista and Coronado.


I’m sure this is not isolated incidences where cities are in two areas especially with economic growth, but seems interesting.

And people get on me here when I contend that the New England way of outlining municipalities is superior to these disjointed messes.

(I know that system isn't for everywhere, like the Rockies, but a lot of places it would work better)

The San Ysidro area is connected to the rest of the City of San Diego by a narrow strip of territory (on the map) that passes north-south through the San Diego Bay.

Closer to me home, ORD airport is entirely in the City of Chicago, (Du Page County), connected to the rest of the city by a one lot wide strip of land along a part of W Foster Ave.  Extended westward, this narrow strip crosses the only part of the ISTHA system that is in fact inside of the Chicago city limits.

Texas law allows for cities to annex land that is not adjacent to the city limit if the city owns that land.  This enables the city to enforce ordinances through its police department on its own property without taxation or other property rights issues affecting anyone else.

Everett extends far east into the mountains to protect its water supply. A 14-mile gap between the main city and the exclave.

Also note that it extends far out into Port Gardner Bay.

Fresno has a detached segment of the city west of CA 41 and south of CA 180 which consists almost entirely of water treatment facilities.  The northern boundary is bounded by Jensen Avenue.

Heh.  MA had a similar case with the Quabbin Reservoir, which, a long time ago, was patrolled by Boston Police.  Jurisdiction was changed to the State, however.

I just noticed that Loma Linda has like three squares totally surrounded by San Bernadino.  Three separate square exclaves.

Charleston, SC is so twisted and convoluted that one needs a GPS and GIS to determine if they are in the limits or not.

Chicago includes O'Hare Airport by annexing a ~100ft wide swath across the tollway along Rosemont's southern limit to connect to the rest of the city.

Los Angeles has spread in weird ways similar to Chicago to include the harbor and San Pedro, and has surrounded cities like Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and San Fernando as those have successfully resisted annexation.

Wow! And I thought Albarracin, province of Teruel, Spain was bad. Its municipal boundaries sneak in between the other municipalities (mostly villages) in the area.
