Title: When did Ontario start using the new gantry design?
Post by: SignGeek101 on April 06, 2015, 09:18:51 PM
I notice that most of Ontario's gantries look similar to US ones, but a few look like this:

Does anyone know when they switched? I personally prefer the newer ones, even though the older ones I understand is a more Canadian design.

There are three main gantries in Ontario...the one you mentioned, which I think is officially called the "triangular truss". I'm not exactly sure on the exact year, but many appeared starting in the early 20-aughts, specifically 2001-02. That one, if I didn't read your post incorrectly IS THE CURRENT GANTRY.

This one on the 410 is the second style, not sure exactly when this one was official but it's going the way of the dodo. Not sure what this one is called either.

Finally, this is the so called "Canadian" design you speak of I assume. I may be wrong, but I think BC was the only other province in Canada to use this style of gantry, which I believe goes by "rounded tube truss". I personally prefer the triangular truss myself, I think it looks nicer myself.

Sorry, I posted the wrong link. I'm sure you know which one I meant.  :-P

I've seen the triangular truss many times in Canada, particularly Alberta (though not BC -- they just use simple monotubes). They look quite strong to me, so I'd like to see them migrate across the border.

That timeline makes sense, the specs for the current signs were published in May 2000.

For current  overhead sign supports, MTO uses:

Tri-Chord Static Sign Supports:

Cantilever Static Sign Supports:

Overhead Monotube Sign Support:

VMS Overhead Truss Support:

There are of course plenty of legacy examples of earlier designs, but for the current installations those are the designs.

I think it's interesting that Ontario started using those around the same time NY stopped using them.

Saskatchewan also uses the old type:

The signs used elsewhere are close to the Ontario design, but are not exactly the same:
