This is what I like about the United States. You wouldn't find much abandoned stuff in Europe, especially not the Netherlands which tend to be compulsively neat to perfect everything.

This is an old thread, but I have to revive it. I found something very interesting while doing some research on the old Newark City Subway. East of the Orange Street station is a four-lane divided highway bridge over the former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Main Line between Orange Street and I-280. What was that supposed to be?

Here's one down at Ditto Landing in Huntsville, AL. There's also a "Road Work Ahead" sign facing the bridge that's left over from when they were building a new bridge on US 231 over the Tennessee River.

This came to mind. I love how it just STOPS in the middle of the Apalachicola River...like, why take out half the bridge and leave the other half there?

According to that site it is used as a walkway for a fishing pier, and USGS river survey equipment in the middle of the river.

Okay, thanks. I was thinking of the Gandy Bridge/OLD US 92 in Tampa, which is used for the same purpose. It would have been nice if this bridge had the same fate.

When i was up in grand forks ND for the military there was an abandoned bridge i kept meaning to check out, looked like a small truss, but there was private property around it, didn't want to risk anything back then (nowadays i would actually go and check it out)

Not really a 'find', but there's always the Beesley's Point Bridge just south of Somers Point, NJ (former/about to be former US9).

When are they getting around to permanently signing US9 over the Garden State Parkway bridge?

The Patridge Creek Bridge....which someone sent me on another forum, never had the patience to double back from Ashfork to I-40.

That is a really cool picture.  Love the tree growing out of the roadway.  And the clouds in the evening make it look a little foreboding and extra abandoned.

The old Gandy Bridge (Friendship Trail Bridge) is slated to be demolished due to deterioration. It was closed in 2008.

Here's an abandoned bridge I found in Brewster, NY:
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=41.410415,-73.622388&ll=41.410423,-73.622355&spn=0.000802,0.002064&num=1&t=h&z=20

If you look at street view at the east end, the image is from August 2012 and construction signage says the bridge is closed "July 21 until further notice". The road does appear slightly overgrown, though, so that sign could be a couple years old in that image.

I would guess that this bridge probably was deemed unfit for traffic after a safety inspection and is now sitting in limbo waiting for the town of Southeast to either find the money to replace it or decide to permanently remove it.
If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

Looks to me like the bridge and approach roadways are still public domain.  As a side note, were you in the Air Force up there?

Damn! If that road were still open, you could go from the Harlem Line towards the Beacon Line almost in a straight line!

Surprised I never posted this one.  We had a roadmeet photo at it.

Notice the strange triple guardrail with red stripes. There's one in Denton, Tx; and since it's incorrect, I didn't expect to see another one.

There was originally a standard wood type 3 barricade here. It was replaced when it rotted and fell down.

The US277 bridge across the Canadian River at Newcastle, OK in November 2011, about 6 months before the tornado tore it up.  Built in 1929, it was abandoned upon completion of the "new" US62 bridge just to the east of it.

Not sure if abandoned bridges that are usually underwater count, but here is the Great Crossings Bridge (built in 1818) that carried the National Road over the Youghiogheny River in Somerfield, PA.  The bridge (and Somerfield) were submerged in the 1940s when the Youghiogheny Dam was built downstream.  Periodically (during periods of lake drawdown or severe droughts), the bridge and the foundations of Somerfield will be visible.  The bridge has held together very well for being 198 years old and having been submerged for almost 70 of them.
