Yes this route is to respond to Six Flags and Napa Wine Country traffic in this section. Also it's a preview on how Caltrans would consider putting DDI's on major intersections in the Bay Area and Sacramento at some point once this is completed.

QuoteCaltrans and the Solano Transportation Authority broke ground Friday on a unique highway improvement for the Bay Area: Its first "diverging diamond interchange." The $25 million project linking Highway 37 and Fairgrounds Drive in Vallejo will "significantly improve traffic flow and safety, while reducing congestion and greenhouse gas emissions," according to a news release from the STA.The diverging diamond interchange is credited to Gilbert Chlewicki, who became interested in different ways to design an intersection as a graduate student studying transportation engineering in 2000. He found that by "untangling" an intersection, he could guarantee green lights throughout the design."The design will take drivers 'on a ride' from left to right through Fairground Drive ramps on Highway 37 as drivers head to more rides in Six Flags Discovery Kingdom or continue to Wine Country in American Canyon & Napa," Caltrans spokesperson Hector Chinchilla told SFGATE in an email.

Did CA 37 and Fairgrounds Drive have a interchange reveal party?

I would like to see them try this treatment for the SPUI on I-680 at Monument Boulevard in Pleasant Hill.  There exists enormous traffic backups during commute times, with the heaviest volumes of traffic entering and exiting the freeway to and from Monument Blvd in the direction of Concord. It's a very tight space, and some level of signal coordination would be necessary with the lights at Buskirk and Contra Costa Blvd, but it really does seem like the best approach for dealing with this overcapacity interchange.

Every day is a winding road, you just got to get used to it.

This thread pre-dates the one you linked.  There was chatter about this interchange in the general California thread even before that.

It seems like a good location for a DDI.

Normally, this is not something you would want as it will force northbound traffic and southbound traffic to meet each other at two intersections.  Since in most cases straight through traffic is the majority of traffic, you don't want to encourage stopping the straight through traffic unnecessarily.  But here, because of the presence of Six Flags and the fairgrounds, more traffic actually turns onto CA-37 than goes straight-through, so it is a good choice for a test run.

My preference for something like this would still be a parclo A4, but I guess since this interchange is so close to I-80/CA-37, there probably is a desire to limit the number of ramps here, so I guess DDI is preferred.

With the proposed freeway upgrade of 262, I'm not sure a DDI is the best choice - though I recall the concept maps for the project show a six-ramp parclo as the replacement for the current 262/680 cloverleaf.
