Title: California SR 42 signs on La Cienega Blvd., Inglewood
Post by: M3100 on November 25, 2021, 06:39:05 PM
California SR 42 (Manchester Blvd) was decommissioned some years back, however two signs remain in Inglewood, where La Cienega Blvd. bridges over I-405.  There are two BGS in the southbound lanes on the bridge; see pics attached.

The La Cienega pictures are from October 2021; the overhead picture is from November 2021.

This general location can also be seen, here facing north from a plane approaching LAX.
La Cienega is the roadway heading away from the camera; it divides into separate bridges to cross over I-405.
The roadway that crosses left to right in the foreground is Florence Ave.
Manchester Blvd. is out of the frame, below the lower edge of the picture.

These signs at this point have to be in city control. Caltrans no longer has control of these signs ever since they decommissioned CA-42 and La Cinega BLVD. Note La Cinega BLVD was originally supposed to be an extension of CA-170.

Those are pretty cool.  I tried to find some CA 42 signage when I went to a Rams game last month but had no luck.

Yeah I'm angry I didn't know about these when I clinched former 42.

Imagine how I felt knowing the general idea of where they were but traffic control leaving a game not permitting me to reach them.   :-/

Nothing says "Important Freeway Stuff" like button copy!

Nice spot. Still a few places where ghostly 42s remain as consolation prizes. There's one on the EB I-105 to NB I-605 flyover we always see heading inland from LAX.

GMSV indicates that sign is old, it's been around (with the remnant CA 42 marker) since at least 2012.

Interestingly CA-42 has been gone for 20 years. But the signs still exist. CA-42 was also CA-105 in some sections.
There is also a map indicating that CA-42 was supposed to be in parts of CA-90 in the Yorba Linda area.

It's even more dumbfounding knowing that CA-42 was decommissioned in 2000, and there are so many new reflective signs saying "Manchester Blvd 42" on the 605 and 405. So you know that those were erected years AFTER the route was decommissioned.

Also former CA-42 has been with the County of Los Angeles and the cities that cover the route for 20 years it's probably one of a few city streets that's still well signed 20 years after it's official decommission. Note initially the decommission was in response to CalTrans using the funds to maintain I-105 freeway.

These two button copy signs on La Cienega are a great find.

Seems like nothing has changed since I commuted to the area in the early 90's.

Very poor greenout that changed Manchester Ave to Manchester Blvd.

The southbound 405 exit to this area is labelled Florence/Manchester.  The northbound 405 exit to this area is labelled Manchester / La Cienega.  There is no direct NB exit to Florence from 405.

While the SB 405 exit is appropriately labelled Florence/Manchester, I do feel that these signs (which traffic exiting from the 405 do not see) should have some reference to denote that La Cienega traffic should follow the Florence/Manchester signs.

There is an additional entrance to SB 405 just one block south of Manchester at Olive/La Cienega.  Sometimes, it is better to take this entrance, because even though you have to sit through the signals at La Cienega/Florence and La Cienega/Manchester, if you enter at Olive, you can enter the freeway without the need to jockey for position vis a vis the Century Blvd exit.  This is useful for those headed to 105 or 405 heading way south of 105.  Back in the 90's, during the morning rush hour there was significant congestion leading up to the Century exit, but then it was smooth sailing south of that point.  That is probably no longer true.

Ah, CA 42, the decommissioned route that refuses to go away... and at this point, I hope it persists!

Because it is the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything :bigass:

If you are wondering why this sign With Manchester Blvd and I-405 is still in button copy. This sign is on LA City, Inglewood or LA County jurisdiction. Caltrans was going have La Cienega as an expanded version of CA-170 at one point until that was cancelled.

It's city of Inglewood, no?

The La Cienega Expy is definitely a great bypass.  Back in the 90s I commuted on it between home in the Hollywood area and my job in El Segundo.  The "freeway" portion is between Rodeo Rd just to the east of Culver City and Fairview Rd in Inglewood.  There is a traffic signal northbound at Stocker Rd as well.  So basically a freeway between I-10 and I-405, but the northern and southern portions are high capacity streets with a handful of traffic signals.

While this portion of La Cienega, as built, never had state highway shields, there are definitely marks of a full freeway.  THere were call boxes with the number LC- (instead of the typical numbering of state highway number - ).  It was maintained by LA county and there were two full interchanges at Baldwin Hills Rec Area and at Slauson Ave.

From the north, La Cienega is a regular L.A. street until it hits the I-10.  Then, it still has many street-like characteristics, but its location is such that traffic from a number of directions defaults onto it.  Fairfax Ave, for instance ends at La Cienega.  Redondo and Hauser end at Jefferson which leads to La Cienega.  Even traffic from the west, on streets like Robertson or Castle Heights lead toward National or Jefferson or Rodeo leading to La Cienega.  None of the west side streets between La Cienega and Sepulveda cross the Baldwin Hills, so much traffic leads toward one or the other.

Anyway, once crossing Rodeo, you are on a freeway.  In teh SB direction the road narrows to two lanes so that traffic from Stocker can enter on the left without the need for a signal.  (There is a signal NB and that severely backs up traffic.)  When the freeway ends, you hit three signals in a row (Fairview, La Tijera, and Centinela).  Two of these are major streets so you are likely to stop along this way.  La Tijera is the most direct way to the airport and Ceninela east is the most direct way to SoFi stadium.  After that, one more signal and then the signs that we talked about with a direct ramp onto I-405 south before La Cienega reverts to a regular street that is also, in some respects, a two-way freeay frontage road.

For a while, Caltrans put up signs encouraging traffic heading between I-405 south and I-10 east (NB 405 to EB 10 or WB 10 to SB 405) to use La Cienega as an effective shortcut.  Prior to the completion of the 105, La Tijera-La Cienega - I-10 was the most direct way between LAX and Downtown LA.

I had an incomplete list Inglewood, South Gate, Downey and Norwalk on who is managing  CA-42 today or who is managing La Cinega Blvd.

Put CA 42/CA 10 to blog form (thank you M3100 for donating the CA 42 shield pics):

https://www.gribblenation.org/2021/12/former-california-state-route-42-and.html?m=1

Of note, I can't figure what the hell was up with US 101 Bypass consuming half of CA 10 east of Rosemead/CA 19.  There is no information on US 101 Bypass to be found in the AASHTO Database which I thought was odd given how much 1930s-1940s stuff they have scanned.

I'm an old man who is used to button copy.  I therefore assume that anything with retroreflective sheeting was installed within the past month.

No. The expressway portion is Los Angeles County, just like Ladera Heights, which is a small county section. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ladera_Heights,_California

And yet we have another reminder of how CA loves everything old. I remember CA 42 well, and I can't believe it was decommissioned around the same time that I moved to Seattle.
