Cool and rainy. Finally getting some beneficial rain, albeit not in ideal increments.

We had the rain yesterday, but today is just gray and gloomy. There's too much green still on the trees to feel truly autumnal, but it's too dreary to feel like summer... exactly the kind of weather that must have inspired "Wake Me Up When September Ends":

It's currently 90 degrees at the South Lake Tahoe airport.  I believe September 6 is the latest date it has ever hit 90 here.  Some years we never get a 90 at all.  Nobody has air conditioning...well, probably Zuckerberg does.

By the end of September we get at least a light dusting of snow more often than not, maybe even a few inches up on the mountains.

Just hit 115F in Fresno at the bottom of the hour and matched the all time high.

Edit:  Celebrated too soon, the officially high is 114F.  Still the highest September temperature.

If it hit 115 after 5 p.m. (0000Z) that will go on the September 7 ledger.

Ted$8roadFan

Coolish and cloudy, high will be in the 70s. But no rain forecast.

No it won't. The divider for NWS climate reporting at stations like the ones at most airports is midnight LST (local standard time), which means 1 AM if daylight savings is in effect.

A lot of the TV weather people in Salt Lake City made a similar error yesterday (reported 106, high was actually 105), and it's because of the way the 5-minute station data gets processed. The sensor measures a temperature, which gets rounded to the nearest full degree Celsius for data transmission. Then when you look at the data online, that gets converted directly into Fahrenheit, and then rounded to the nearest degree F again.

Say the actual temperature in Fresno is exactly 114ºF (45.56ºC). That gets rounded to 46ºC for the 5-minute observation data. Then when you load the data on your own, that value is converted to Fahrenheit (114.8ºF) and then rounded for display (in this case, up to 115ºF).

Worth noting that Sacramento did get a record 116F yesterday.

Drought level was previously 3 in my area surrounded by a lot of 2s. Now:
3: Boston MA, Gloucester MA, Newburyport MA, Newport RI
2: Lowell/Lawrence/Haverhill MA, Worcester MA, Taunton MA, most of Cape Cod, Manchester NH, Nashua NH, Portsmouth NH, Portland ME, Keene NH, Martha's Vineyard MA, Amherst MA, Hartford CT, Manhattan and all of Long Island
1: Providence RI, Plymouth MA, Kittery ME, Concord NH, eastern half of Connecticut, Nantucket MA, Springfield MA, most areas surrounding Hartford CT
0 (0 is not off the map; it's none-0-1-2-3-4): York ME, northern half of NH

For the rest of the country, the only populated areas in 4 appear to be the Central Valley of California and a tiny dot in San Antonio. There's no background map, so I can't tell if Bend OR is included, but Bend isn't that major. Almost all of California is in 2+, though, with San Diego (1) being the main exception.
Clinched, minus I-93 (I'm missing a few miles and my file is incorrect)

Traveled, plus US 13, 44, and 50, and several state routes

I will be in Burlington VT for the eclipse.

JayhawkCO

80° and about 1,000% humidity (in Granada, Nicaragua). Typing this message is making me sweat more.

So Cal is about to get hit with the remnants of Hurricane Kay. Hopefully this will extinguish the out-of-control fires near Hemet and Big Bear. Expect to hear news of mudslides in old burn scars over the weekend as Kay dumps a couple inches of rain over So Cal (even Palm Springs is predicted to get over 2" of rain).

jakeroot

Smoky today around Western Washington. For the first time in months, I've brought in the AC vents and closed off my windows. It's a little muggy in here, but it beats breathing in smoke.

70s and sunny otherwise, with the smoke seemingly limiting the temperature. No rain in the forecast apart from a chance of storms next week. Mid 90s tomorrow.

Ted$8roadFan

Cloudy, with the sun popping out. We had a relatively large amount of rain yesterday and earlier this morning.

ET21

Early taste of autumn. 60s for highs with on/off showers and blustery NW winds.
The local weatherman, trust me I can be 99.9% right!
