The last time you took a road trip out of state, where did you cross the state line into the neighboring state? When you returned what road did you use to reenter your home state?
I left Florida on last Sunday using US 221. I returned on Wednesday via US 231 from Alabama. I drove over 2500 miles to do a road trip up to Memphis and back.
Last fall I entered Nevada via US 50. I ended up returning to California via NV 28.
Last weekend on a trip to Elizabeth City and Hertford to see progress on the S-bridge replacement project. Took US-17 both ways across the Virginia / North Carolina border.
The last time I left the state was yesterday. Drove into Philly via the Ben Franklin Bridge (I-676), exiting at the base onto 5th. Returning, I took the Walt Whitman, I-76.
A true roadtrip: I-295 across the Delaware Memorial.
A week ago took a road trip from Maryland to Maine and back. Both leaving Maryland and returning to Maryland was on I-83 (one of the few duplications in my route - I normally do a circular route rather than take the same way both directions)
VA-168 to NC-168 to NC-34 to secondary road to NC-343 to US-17 north.
VA-86/NC-86. Most recent trip was this past Thursday. Our doctors are at Duke in Durham, NC, so we go that way often. We got two more trips to make this week.
I-90 (NY-MA), I-91 (MA-VT), VT 153 (VT-NY)
US-61/151 to and from Iowa.
I-85, to/from New York City/Philadelphia/DC
Actually a somewhat interesting answer: crossed into VT via NY 313, then returned to NY via VT 9/NY 7.
Haven't been out of the state but once this year with me driving, when I drove up to see the new Portsmouth, Ohio bypass back in the winter. Left Kentucky on KY 10/OH 253 (Jesse Stuart Bridge at the Greenup Dam) and returned on the new Ironton/Russell Bridge.
Only other time was when I took my Amtrak trip to California. Left Kentucky on I-71/I-75 (Brent Spence Bridge) but flew back in to CVG.
Went up to the Springfield area a few weeks ago. Left and re-entered CT on I-91
Semi-related question: How many times per year would you normally leave your state?
I imagine it varies significantly, ranging from daily in places like the Philly and NYC areas, to maybe only a few times per year for people in the middle of a large state.
I am somewhere in between - far enough away from a state line that crossing one is a significant event, but not crazy; Ontario and parts of PA are well within day trip range. I guess maybe 20 times to Canada and 5-10 times to other states, so around 25-30 total occurrences of leaving NY state per year.

Most years 3 to 6 times, VA-MD and VA-WV.

These days since I live in Central California only about a dozen times. When lived in Arizona I would leave the state well over 100 times a year during work travel.
Well, when I'm traveling between Chicago and Tennessee, I usually enter Indiana on I-80/I-94, but this last time, I took a more leisurely route, and entered on US-24/US-52.
Two months ago I took a trip to Kansas. I exited MO on I-435 (southern part of the loop) and re-entered on KS/MO 171 (two different routes but the same number).
If commuting counts, then it's I-395 both ways yesterday (October 18) via the HOV bridge in both directions.
If commuting doesn't count, then our trip to Toronto in June would be my most recent out-of-state trip. In both directions we used the Capital Beltway, but via different routes–left Virginia via the Woodrow Wilson Bridge on I-95/I-495 (heading to US-50 and the Bay Bridge) and returned via the American Legion Bridge on I-495 (coming from US-219/I-99/US-220/I-68/I-70/I-270).
Most recently, US 71 leaving and returning.
Michigan to Ohio and back - I-75 both ways.
My last out-of-province drive was a weekend trip to Port Austin, MI. Both ways, I crossed the border on the Blue Water Bridge between Port Huron, MI and Sarnia, ON.
Not counting the road trip I'm on right now, I left Virginia on I-95 at the NC border, and returned on I-81 at the WV border. That was basically a triangular trip, to Florida and returning via Ohio.
I was out clinching routes in Westchester County last Sunday and dipped into CT a couple times; once via I-84 (well, its exit ramps technically) so I could turn around and photograph the new mile-based exit numbers, and again entering on US 1 before ducking back down to I-95 to return to NY.
As for the last time I spent a significant amount of time out of state (so no dipping in while clinching NY routes that touch the border) would be my trip to the Providence City Meet, entering and leaving MA on I-90.
My last trip outside of Ohio was to Michigan, via US 23/223. Both ways.

Last time I went out-of-state on a strictly road-based trip, I went to a friend's house in MD and crossed over on I-495 at the ALB both times.
If it counts, I was also up in Greater Boston for business last week (via plane) and took a short trip with my rental car to Portland, ME that left the state using I-95 both ways.
I just left the state to get lunch (I live a block from the state line). I left and returned to the state on River Drive/Bernice Rd.
As to the question of how often I leave the state, not every day but nearly daily.

October 1st, heading to a Long Island Ducks Baseball game in Central Islip, NY. That would be I-95 from Greenwich, CT into Port Chester, NY. Couldn't help but notice the reconstruction of the I-95/I-287 interchange on the Port Chester/Rye village/town line. Came back into the Land Of Lamont (CT) in the opposite direction.
Just over two weeks ago, I took a trip to the Albany NY area. Took I-90/Mass Pike/Berkshire Extension both ways.
Left and returned via US 93.
Probably cross the state line three or four times a year. I actually live closer to the Mexico border than any state line, but haven't crossed into Mexico in about three years now.
Last time I crossed a state line by road, it was from Utah into Idaho and back on US 89.
Left VA on US 460 WB, re-entered on I-77 SB.
I-77 to Charleston, WV. Actually took (I think) WV 527 into Ohio from Huntington, same trip. Both times took the same highway back.
NY/VT via US2, last weekend.
When I went to Colorado, I left on I-35 and returned on MSR 60.
From home: I-75 to and from Florida.
From the last place I took a road trip from: left Texas on US 75 and returned on I-35 (having flown to Texas from home).
One day, on a road trip from California to Seattle, I left California on US-395 in Topaz, and re-entered California on US-395 north of Reno.
Last weekend, I was coming back from upstate and took I-684 where it goes from New York to Connecticut back to New York.

I also left Arkansas last weekend for a 3 day weekend for our anniversary (without kids!) on
US-71, since I-49 isn't complete in the area until 2022, hopefully. After staying in downtown KC, MO for a night and doing the Union Station area that night and River Market the next morning via the free streetcar there, did some biking along the Missouri River, then left to stay the next night in Branson, MO and had a wonderful dinner at Landrey's there before waking up the next morning for swimming and the hot tub before checking out and returning home via
US-65.

I left on M-66 and re-entered on US-23.

Last time I was both out and back in on I-15. The two times before that, I when I left I was on a road that doesn't even leave the state (from SJC on CASR-87 and from Long Beach Harbor on CASR-1).
Tuesday I crossed the MD/VA line in each direction on I-95/I-495.

On Halloween night, I took my wife on a date to a painting class in East Longmeadow, MA. We left and returned to CT on I-91.

Last time I left Delaware by car I was heading to West Virginia via Maryland and Virginia, on Labor Day weekend, so I took DE-8 into MD-454 and I believe I took the same route back.
I left Kansas on I-435 and re-entered on I-35.
Man, for a trip that involved a LOT of state and county highways, that sure looks awfully boring!
For the Newberryport road meet, I-80/94 (Borman/Kingery Expressway) both ways.
For my vacation to Key West, I left via I-80/94 and returned on IL-15 in Mt Carmel, in one of my last three counties in Illinois.
At least 260 times a year do I exit and enter WI on the same highway (61/151) to Iowa. I entered/exited IL via 35(both sides) on occasion
The last time I left Oklahoma, it was on I-35 over the Red River bridge into Texas. I returned via the same bridge. In a few weeks I will also likely both leave and return to Oklahoma on I-35, but at the other end, into Kansas.
I usually only leave the state once or twice a year or so, since my job doesn't afford me a lot of travel opportunity.

Left VA via US 21/US 221 south of Independence, returned via I-77.
I went to the Alabama beaches in August and both ways it was entering and leaving Louisiana on I-10 at the MS state line.
The last time I didn't use the same route was going to Mobile area in May. Left Louisiana on I-10 and returned across US 84/US 425 MS River bridge.

Lewis Avenue from Michigan into Ohio and back, when I bought my new truck.
To get from Illinois to Toronto, Quebec, the Maritimes, and Maine, we crossed the IL/IN border on I-80/94. We crossed back into Illinois at the same point, but it was pouring rain on the return trip. Most trips from Chicagoland to points east begin this way.
Last out-of-state trip I took was to Virginia, using I-81 to leave and reenter PA.
My most recent trip was my first time going to the Big Ten Championship game in Indianapolis.

Left Wisconsin on County Hwy U which becomes Hunt Club Rd as it enters Illinois. I returned on US-45.
My most recent road trip, I left and returned to Oklahoma on I-35.

This was not your usual tourist adventure. Had to wait for completion of the Cornwall Bypass (TCH relocation) in PEI and the Regina Bypass (another TCH relocation) in Saskatchewan, both in mid- to late October. Both provinces tend to wrap up major road projects right around the end of construction season.

Since I live close to the state line, even short shopping and other trips will often take me out of state. So I'm not going to keep updating this thread.
Looking back, I only left and re-entered Kentucky once this year by vehicle, and that was to drive the Portsmouth bypass a year ago today.
This was not a good year for travel or photography. Outside the Amtrak trip I took with my brother (left Cincinnati by train and returned to Kentucky via plane), the farthest I got home from home was Louisville, twice, for work. So the only photos I got this year were from those two trips.
This year is shaping up to be more of the same. I didn't even visit a Sheetz once this year, and don't see an opportunity to do so again for quite some time.
Last time I left Ontario was on one of the bridges connecting to Gatineau Quebec

My most recent time leaving the province was in the middle of January to go to the Detroit Airport (DTW). On the way to Detroit, I crossed through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel during a heavy rainstorm. On the way home, I crossed on the Ambassador Bridge during a snowstorm :-D. At least the line-ups were very short both ways!
I went Vermonting! a couple of weeks ago and that was my most recent trip out of New York. Left the Empire State on the Bennington Bypass/VT 279 and left the Green Mountain State on VT 313/NY 313. I wanted to grab some photos of Bennington County covered bridges with a veil of fresh snow.
I left SC on I-95 early last week and will return likely on I-95 on Friday evening. Normally I leave SC on I-77 at least once a week.
Yesterday, I went from Johnson City TN to Abingdon VA. On the way there, I took I-81, but on the way book, I used VA-75/TN-44.
Most recent out-of-state trip, early last fall, was to help a friend who was moving from Scotts Valley, CA to Reno, NV -- but he had previously moved a large portion of his belongings to a storage space in Lodi. All driving Penske over-the-cab vans (3 total). Went over CA 12 from Lodi to CA 88 in Lockeford and then up 88 all the way into NV, and finally up US 395 and I-580 into Reno. Dropped off the vans there and all piled up into his extended-cab Ram for the return trip the next day -- and he wanted to go via the Feather River Canyon, so we re-entered CA on US 395 en route to CA 70 (and then CA 99, I-80, and I-680 back to San Jose).

I recently returned from a conference in Macon GA. I left Tennessee on I-75 in Chattanooga, and I returned on US-23 in Dillard.
Took a little day trip a couple of days ago:
Left NY to PA on I-84 and came back in on I-81.
Same trip earlier on:
Left NY to NJ on Mountain Road into NJ from I-84. Came back in on NJ 23 into Port Jervis.
When I drove up to NYC in April 2019, I left Florida along US 17 and came back along I-95, and that was only after I made a U-Turn at Exit 1 on I-95 in Georgia.
I don't remember if I left Florida along I-95 in November 2019 or not, but I know I drove back on US 17 in December 2019.
Living 5 miles from one state, and 20 from another - this happens fairly often.
Last fall, I was between jobs and took a temp job just west of the Cincinnati airport, in Hebron KY. I live in Cincinnati. The most direct route is to use I-71/75, and most days I would go to work that way. Coming home was a different story - sometimes I would use I-275 through Indiana to I-74 or the ferry between Constance KY and Cincinnati. The 275/74 way was about 10 miles longer, but I could usually go 70-75 the whole way, as opposed to 10-20 on parts of 71/75. The ferry was probably not a time saver, but much more relaxing.
Because of a group I am in, I still go to Kentucky one evening a week, and, depending on where I am leaving from, and current traffic conditions, I take I-275, I-471, I-71/75, or US-25/42/127. Coming home later in the evening, I almost always take I-71/75. It's only 15-20 minutes when there's no traffic.
As far as an out of state road trip, on my most recent trip, I both left and re-entered on I-74.
My last trip out of Colorado was last summer's trip to Vegas. I-70 out, I-70 back.

Anderson Ferry is quite popular as a commuter route for people who live in Ohio but work at the airport.

The nearest grocery store sits just barely on my side of the IN/IL border, with some of the parking lot on the other side. It's not uncommon for me to cross the state line in the parking lot, park, cross the state line on foot to enter the store, cross again on foot after exiting, and then cross one more time in the parking lot heading home.
It was a beautiful, mild (78°) Friday afternoon, perfect for a drive with the windows down & "Vinyl Classics" jammin on XM. I left home (Crestview,FL) on US 90 & FL 83 to AL 153. I cruised Samson, Andalusia, Geneva & River Falls , AL. I re-entered FL from AL 55 to FL 85 back to Crestview.
One station in AL was selling gas for $1.94, others &2.00-$2.15. Crestview prices were from $2.14 in town to $2.59 at the I 10 FL 85 area, gouge the tourist smh. All in all a near perfect Friday 13.
I left and re-entered Michigan on my last trip (to Florida) via the US-31 freeway near Niles both ways

What was the last state you visited before COVID-19 hit?
For me, it was actually the province of Ontario, about 3 weeks ago. Prior to that, I don't think I hit any other US states since PA and Ohio last November.
EDIT: Just remembered the day-trip to Jersey I did at the end of January.
Last state not my own would be PA.
Before the outbreak came, I was doing field visits for work and had a meeting that was way shorter than I'd planned. So I decided I'd take my lunch break then and took a walk. Didn't realize that I was so close to the PA border.
So I crossed into PA on foot from DE on PA/DE-82.

More work for me (California). Granted that demand right now is being driven by the virus. In theory I could easily leave the state at any time provided I had 2-3 days to make it worth it. I don't make a habit of saying where I'm going anyways so it shouldn't bother anyone what remote corner of the world I chose to visit regardless of the circumstance. That said, what I had planned was traversing the Great Basin Desert before things went nutty lately. Granted what I hade mind was for late April anyways.

In my case, yeah, technically I *could* jump in the car and drive 2 hours to PA just for the sake of it, but it's just not happening at this point.

In my case, yeah, technically I *could* jump in the car and drive 2 hours to PA just for the sake of it, but it's just not happening at this point.
Pennsylvania is still keeping lodging open as an essential business.

The places I go to on the other side of the line are stores and restaurants that are all closed right now. The only place I frequent that is open is the hardware store but they are offering rewards members free delivery so I've been using that.

If I lived that close to a state line, I'd definitely be walking across just to say I did it.
Of course, I live a solid 2 hours from a state line, and in fact Canada is closer than any other state.
I work not far from a county line, but I guess I haven't crossed it much recently. In fact, I'm not sure I've left my home county since early March. March 7th is the last time I definitively remember leaving the county.
July: Out on US 63 south of Bloomfield, in on I-80 at Council Bluffs
August: Out on IA 15 north of Armstrong, in on M27 north of Lake Park
Fall: Out on I-80 at the Quad Cities, in on MO/IA 27
Since Jan. 16 I have only been in three counties.

I had to check my Google Maps timeline on this one. I haven't left MA since February 21, entering and exiting VT on I-91.
this year I left on I 64 east and reentered on I 71/75 south. an approximately 3500 mile road trip that crossed itself 3 times through new england and the mid atlantic states.
Last time I left Michigan I did so on US-45 and rentered on I-94.
On my most recent trip, left on I-81 and re-entered on I-99.
My last out-of-state travel was a 24-hour trip to New Orleans in November (my friend managed to score some free tickets to an NFL game), so it was I-10 across the Texas—Louisiana line both ways.

There was one day when we drove over Memorial Bridge (again leaving Virginia on Washington Boulevard) and then back over the 14th Street Bridge (I-395) when we decided one of the cars just needed to be driven, but I don't remember whether that was before or after April 14. On our other trip to Arlington Cemetery on Memorial Day, we didn't leave Virginia because I used Route 110 in both directions instead (despite the loop ramp there, they let you make a left onto that ramp as you exit the cemetery).

I haven't left the state in over 9 months. And can't really see myself doing so for at least another 8 or 9. I'd like to make a couple trips; I'm just not sure it's safe enough to make it feasible.
Since March 13th (the last day I worked in the office), I have left Massachusetts exactly twice. First time was on Friday, June 19th, when I went up to Derry NH for a dentist appointment and a haircut (both my dentist and stylist are long time family friends, which is why I trek up to New Hampshire for those tasks). On that trip, I left and re-entered the state on I-93. Second time was on Sunday, July 19th, when I went down to Naragansett RI to spend the day with my brother and his wife. On that trip I left and re-entered the state on I-95.
I've left MO for AR on more than one occasion this summer, though all but this most recent trip to Beaver Lake involved US65 there and back. This time, it involved MO/AR 37 and AR23/Route P.
I saw this thread and remembered that I haven't left Wisconsin by road since August 2019 :colorful:. I flew to Colorado in February, the only time I've left the state at all since last August.

Last time, I left PA on an unnumbered local road and returned from MD 86/PA 516.
Not counting going over to Northern Kentucky which is several times a month on my own vehicle, and not counting driving I-471 to I-275 and return while driving a bus my last time out of the state was out on US 30 and return on I-74. It was my first time on that part US 30 in late July. Indiana is a great daytrip from here.

My mom and I just drove from Cincinnati to her home in Myrtle Beach area. We left Ohio on I-275 entering Indiana.

OK, in spite of what I said above, as we came down the new US-219 today, we both said we had no desire to take I-70 and I-270, so Ms1995hoo said to take Corridor H. She didn't realize that meant taking two-lane US-219 south to Thomas to connect, but if she wanted me to take Corridor H, who am I to argue?! :biggrin: Only downside was that the segment from Wardensville to I-81 was very slow due to some doofus who was content to do 40 mph. Nobody seemed to want to pass him, so I wound up passing as many as seven cars at a time. My wife didn't like that–she seems not to like passing on two-lane roads. My feeling is, why else would they have passing zones?
Just got back from a camping trip with my boys on Friday.
We left Kansas on Stanton County RD 12 (becomes CO-116) on Monday, 28-SEP-2020. It's a county road with no lane markings (at least at the time I drove it), signed at 65 mph.
We re-entered Kansas on US-56 at Elkhart on Thursday, 01-OCT-2020.
Did a day trip down to the Allegany Mtns last weekend. Crossed from NY into PA via NY 280/PA 346, which was a first-time crossing for me. Also got a surprise clinch of Warren County, PA, and later crossed back into NY on US 219.
This was the first time I've been more than one county away since March.
Wow. Just by quick count, I've been more than one county away from my home county on seven separate occasions since the start of the pandemic. Five of those were day trips, the other two were overnight.
However, I only just last weekend drove through Buffalo for the first time since the pandemic hit. That stretch from early March until now was definitely, hands-down, the longest stretch of time that I've gone in my lifetime without visiting Erie County. Under normal circumstances I'd visit or pass through at least once or twice a month.
It isn't necessarily pandemic-related for me. We just hadn't made any travel plans since March.
10/14: Left Ohio by air, crossing the OH/IN line approximately 30,000 feet above Union City.
10/20: Re-entered Ohio from Indiana on US 24.
This difference in the modes of transport gives me an idea for a thread, which I will very soon be posting in the Travel forum.

Back on Saturday, left Ohio for West Virginia via US 35. Back on Tuesday I reentered Ohio, from West Virginia via Oh 833.
Left Texas on US 377 into Oklahoma and returned on I-35. No predetermined destination but ended up taking a spin through Ardmore, around the Turner Falls area, stretched my legs and stared at some wind turbines, and made Stuckey's and Buc-ee's stops on the way home.
I've mentioned this before, but I crossed over the Florida-Georgia Line and back on US 17 during my recent Northeastern Florida photography crusade in October.
Last Thursday I left and re-entered Michigan both on US-23.
This is sad. Have I really not left the state since December of 2019? I've been doing photo excursions around Georgia, so I guess not.
Went from my home at Lawrenceville, GA to Lexington, KY to see my daughter and son-in-law. Left via I-75, taking it all the way up, but returned via US 23-441, having come through Cumberland Gap.

Btw, not too long after re-entering Michigan a doe was standing in the left lane and I slammed into it at 80 mph near MM 12 on NB US-23. That area has woods right up to the freeway.
Went down to Taos two weekends ago through CO159/NM522. The "Colorful Colorado" sign at the border is definitely an upgrade view-wise than the ones you'll see coming from I-25, I-70, or I-76. It's too bad NM doesn't have a "Land of Enchantment" sign at this border spot though :(
When I most recently left the state (a storm chasing excursion), I left on I-40 west and returned on US 62 east.
This afternoon I went out for a ride. I left FL & entered AL on FL 85 then returned to FL on US 331. AL gas is much cheaper than FL by 20-30 cents.

Did round trip from VT to MI in October, and the last state line crossover was US 4 from NY to VT. I recently moved to VT and have family to the west, and all the different, fairly logical ways to cross state lines to get from Burlington to I-87 are pretty exciting.
In my recent Tennessee trip, I entered and left MO, IL, and KY on US-60. The only time I left a state on one road and reentered it on another was KY/TN, where I left KY to TN on US 127, and reentered it on US 41 ALT.

Not technically - I exited Colorado on I-76 twice. But yes, I try to take different routes for different trips.
The Eastern Plains of Colorado are what they are. Pretty in their own way, but usually I just want to get beyond them. I-76 serves it purpose on that front.

Not technically - I exited Colorado on I-76 twice. But yes, I try to take different routes for different trips.
The Eastern Plains of Colorado are what they are. Pretty in their own way, but usually I just want to get beyond them. I-76 serves it purpose on that front.

Last week, my wife wanted to run errands before a doctor's appointment. We were very early and needed to kill time. So, we left Connecticut for the first time since last March, driving to I-84 Exit 1 in Massachusetts, and then turning around and going back to her appointment.
Side note: VMS for eastbound traffic on I-84 just over the state line cautions about exit numbers changing soon.
Left Colorado on CO159 onto NM522, returned the same way.

I actually ventured out of state this past weekend, but just barely.

This is an interesting question if only because I can't remember. It would have been US-50 or I-80 from CA into Nevada, but I can not remember when, or which trip.
Most of our "leave the state" trips begin and end at SFO or OAK.
On my spring break road trip, I left Missouri on US 54 and eventually re-entered it on Old K-96, which becomes Hwy YY when it crosses the state line.
Walked in Michigan on Mitchaw Rd in Sylvania, OH, then crossed back. It's County Line Rd (Monroe/Lenawee) in Michigan. So I was in 3 counties within a few steps.
I'll slip back over the border on US-23 later in the week.
My family and I left Virginia and entered Maryland Using I-495, and entered Virginia using I-81.
A month late, but I've been out of the state for the first time in 2021. I-74 to and from Indiana.
Actually went out-of-state today and visited two other states. Left Kentucky on the bridge at Ashland and entered Ohio. Left Ohio and entered West Virginia on US 52. Left West Virginia and re-entered Kentucky on WV 37/KY 3 Spur.
My last out of state trip was to Montana and we exited and entered California via I-80. (Our route there was I-80 from Sacramento to Wells, NV, then north on US-93 all the way through Idaho to Montana. My in-laws live just off US-93. We took a little different route back, avoiding US-93 between Salmon, ID and Arco, ID, but otherwise it was US-93 to I-80).
My most recent trip took me to Texas. I left on I-44, returned on I-35.
Left Georgia today on I-20, returned on I-85.
Last time I left Michigan I did so on an airplane. Last time I re-entered Michigan I did so on I-75.
Kind of a unique one today. I left Colorado on Larimer County Road 59 into Wyoming and re-entered on Weld County Road 390 from Wyoming after having also traveled in Nebraska.

22-JUN-2021 through 24-JUN-2021 – to the border town of Del Rio, TX
This was to help my best friend move storage units from Wichita. He and his family are preparing to return to the mission field in Mexico shortly, after having had their third child here in Wichita. They've been renting two storage units in Wichita, which is 1050 miles from where they live in Mexico. This move will allow them to vacate one of the storage units here, and have half their stateside belongings only 350 miles away from home instead. We pulled a U-Haul trailer one-way behind his Pathfinder. He did all the driving southbound (it was his rental trailer, after all), and I did about 300 miles of the driving northbound.

Interestingly, we left Wichita immediately after my eldest son boarded a charter bus with the church youth group, bound for camp near Rocksprings, TX. After our 700-mile trip, we ended up being just 70 miles (as the crow flied) from my son. The camp is located down eight miles of unpaved road, so they recommend following the bus in a chase vehicle. Our youth pastor therefore rented a car in a town near Rocksprings to follow behind the bus. He hit a deer with it on the way back. Oops.
Comments:
I told my friend ahead of time to contact K-Tag and update the axle count on his tag, in order to avoid U-Haul being charged for toll violations in Kansas and Oklahoma, and therewith the potential for U-Haul billing him for the same. As I kind of expected, he put off looking into it until the last minute, didn't see a way to do it online, and basically said Oh well at that point. All I can say is that I'm glad it's not my bank account.
I-44 through central OKC sucks. I don't know why so many people love it. It's twisty, it has wonky exits, and it's been under construction forever now. Glad I wasn't driving that stretch. I always go I-35 to I-40 to I-44 instead.
A lot of the BGSes along I-44 on the south side of OKC are really faded, and I don't remember them being that way just 1½ years ago. What happened? It's gotten to the point that you can barely even read a couple of them.
Some parts of US-277 in northern Texas are getting kind of beat up, although road construction seems to be handling some of the worst parts. I'll still take it over I-35 through Texas any day, though.
What genius decided to make US-277 four lanes all the way from Wichita Falls to Abilene, but then leave this tiny little two-lane bit (https://goo.gl/maps/z3PoyDruXRnSeAEQ9) on the southbound lanes through the junction north of Anson?
Driving 700 miles with overdrive disengaged makes for some crappy gas mileage. Much happier after we dropped off the trailer and returned north with a nearly empty vehicle.

This was a family vacation, my family of five plus my parents. We did the drive with our Pathfinder (with rooftop cargo box on top) leading and my parents' car following behind. In 2014, I swore to never drive through Dallas—Fort Worth again, and I made it this long before needing to. Was I looking forward to driving through both Dallas and Houston on the same day? NO! But you do what you have to do, I suppose.
I did all the driving this time, except for the southbound stretch from Edmond (OK) to Gainesville (TX). I find it's a lot easier to stay awake and alert when there's someone else following my own vehicle.

My mom complained during a recent trip to Kansas City that I was leading at 5 mph over the limit, and she's only comfortable at about 3 or 4 mph over the limit. This time, I drove what I though was 3 mph over the limit, but her speedometer showed we were going 1 mph under. And she made a comment about that too. Geez, I can't handle such a narrow range of acceptable speeds! Whatever...

I made the best of Dallas by taking this route (https://goo.gl/maps/qxFrejdXEVdj6XQz9)–I-35E to the PGBT to I-20 to I-35E to US-287. It wasn't that bad, really, except that my car was hit heading back northbound. On I-35E in Lewisville, some guy was hot-dogging, changing multiple lanes, and bumped the right corner of our rear bumper. We heard the knock, then felt the car jiggle. Both he and I slowed down, I exited the highway to check out the damage, and the other driver just kept on driving. Hit and run. Fortunately, there was practically zero damage to our car, just a scratch, not even a dent. My wife had taken a picture of the other guy's license plate, but I didn't bother to report it, considering nothing really happened to our car. The Lord really protected us, considering what might have happened! But suffice to say that I haven't exactly warmed up to driving through Dallas now.
This was my first time ever driving on I-45, my first time driving in Houston. And we hit Houston at the afternoon rush hour. Good heavens! All the way from Conroe to Beltway 8, traffic was thick and slow and stressful. And that's with at least four lanes to work with! Beltway 8 /slash/ the Sam Houston Tollway had some parts under construction, and it had its own bad traffic to deal with. At long last, we finally reached I-45 to Galveston, and there was road construction plus the aftermath of multiple wrecks to deal with. Man, that last driving stretch from Huntsville to Galveston was more stressful than all the rest of the drive put together! Yeesh... We had gained about 20 to 30 minutes on my timetable, and then we lost it all in about 100 miles.
The Sam Houston Ship Channel Bridge is seriously HIGH! Drive up, up, up, up. It made me a little nervous being so far up. And to think, they're in the process of replacing it in order to make even MORE room underneath!
Driving on Galveston Island is quite different, with cars sharing the road with golf carts all over the place.
Northbound, we hit pouring rain and standing water on I-45 between Galveston and Houston, hard enough to require slowing down to 50 mph. Houston traffic was fine early in the morning of July 5. Dallas wasn't even su-u-u-u-uper terrible, except for the whole getting hit thing.
What really sucked, though, was holiday traffic funneling through the one-lane sections of road construction in Oklahoma. It was bad enough at Pauls Valley, that we even got off the Interstate and deviated on OK-19 and OK-74 (https://goo.gl/maps/HnMup9pszBXmonWb6). As I type this, in fact, that deviation is still the route Google Maps recommends. We stopped for a potty break before getting back on the Interstate, and then we were only about one or two minutes behind the traffic we'd left behind (as estimated by passing some of the same vehicles a second time). So, if our break was 15 minutes, then we really ended up saving more than 12 minutes by taking the two-laners.
Oklahoma has not gotten rid of the "STATE LAW / MERGE NOW" signs. I saw probably ten of them. However, I did see one instance of their implementing the zipper merge. They used a portable VMS to say "TAKE TURNS AT MERGE POINT". Traffic was so terrible, though, that I really have no idea how it compared.
When there's a lane closure up ahead, why do drivers all get into the right lane way early, when they haven't even yet encountered a sign telling them which lane is closed? Why do they all assume it isn't the right lane that's closing?
When I was in junior high, I wrote something terrible about Oklahoma in school. Like, so bad I won't even tell you what it was. Because of that incident, my parents made me write a research paper about the history of Oklahoma on my own time. When we arrived in Blackwell for supper on Monday, my dad told me he owed me an apology–because Oklahoma deserved it! That comment was based on the pavement condition and traffic nightmares we encountered.
No further travel plans so far.

Distance was a problem where I used to be but it's a lot more within reach now. That whole area has always intrigued me.

If you want to check out old coal towns, I'd eschew Grundy (and Matewan, too) in favor of the US 52 corridor, especially between Bluefield and Welch. I'm unfamiliar with the Bridle Creek Bridge so I googled it; it appears to be some sort of low-water bridge near Mouth of Wilson. Burkes Garden is being discussed on another thread. That area is pretty familiar to me (I'm about three hours from Bristol and Kingsport) so holler if you want any travel tips.

This morning we stopped at Reagan Airport and then went to Arlington Cemetery to visit my father's grave, so we exited Virginia into DC (Columbia Island) via the GW Parkway, crossed back into Virginia on Memorial Avenue, crossed back to DC on Memorial Avenue again, and returned to Virginia on Washington Boulevard.

In my recent (long) post, I said I left and re-entered Kansas on I-35 twice each recently, and I said I went to Texas both times. I gave no information about what highways I used to cross the Oklahoma/Texas border, yet no one had a problem with that because that isn't what this thread is about.

Honestly I could have told ya what it's like, just like any other Interstate basically going across boring farm fields. I'm not sure where exactly you were heading to so I put Cincinnati in as the destination and it says it's only 19 miles longer and 15 minutes more time to take the route that you took compared to the fastest route between Cranberry Township and Cincinnati. Even taking that route how much of the Ohio Turnpike did you experience?
I'm presuming on his eastward trip to PGH, he exited the interstate system at Cambridge and took US 22 over to Steubenville. I've done that twice, once in each direction. The first time was westbound, and I remembered it as being a long and agonizing slog once the improved route ran out. But I also hadn't slept well the night before and was yawning the whole way. So I did it eastbound a few years ago traveling from Columbus to the Ohio River valley, opting for US 22 over staying on I-70 and then taking OH 7 north. (I-70 to I-77 to the US 22 exit). The second trip wasn't as bad as I remembered the first trip being. It was an interesting drive.

Nah I avoid using I-70 completely. Did I-71->OH 315->I-670->I-270->OH 161->OH 16->US 36->US 250->US 22. OH 161/16 is mostly 4 lane, and so is US 36 west of I-77. It was a pretty nice drive as there's very little truck traffic east of Newark. Also, I used I-70 east of Columbus way too many times (on various trips to NYC and DC), and am bored of it.

The state line in that area is interesting. The first time I was in the area, in 2002, I was driving up WV 92 and made runs to the state line on both WV 39 and WV 84 to get End sign photos for the old State-Ends site. (I've since driven westbound on VA 39 to cross the state line). WV 92 seems to run along a fairly level plateau of sorts, and the state line is at the top of a precipice, so to speak. Immediately after you cross the state line going east on both routes, you start descending a mountain.
Compare that to other crossings, such as I-64, US 250, and US 33, where you climb a mountain on both sides of the state line.

Heh, your experience with that route is the opposite of mine. I grew up in SLC and had family in Denver, so we'd drive there on occasion. Every time we took the Wyoming route, we'd do 80 all the way to Cheyenne before turning south on 25, simply because it was all interstate and that's what we'd always done. In the pre-Google era, how was one to know 287 was faster?
My parents were shocked to learn 287 is in fact a faster way between Laramie and Fort Collins. I just drove that route for the first time a month ago.

I thought those were the only two hwys nearby to drive to AL . However checking Google Maps I see there are 3 additional hwys to AL, Okaloosa County Hwys 85A, 6 & 393. I thought 393 deadended at FL 85 but I see it continues as Robinson Rd into AL tho its not signed 393 except on Google Maps. There are many dirt roads that cross to AL also altho some of those might require 4WD that I dont have.
I guess I'll go exploring Sunday, I'll take pix if anything is noteworthy<doubtful

From Boone to Johnson City, entering Tennessee on 421? What route did you take past Mountain City?
I've said before that my go-to route to Boone is to take US 23 and Alternate US 58 to Abingdon, then US 58 to Damascus, then VA/TN 91 to Mountain City. But that seems a bit out of the way if you're going as far south as Johnson City, and I have no desire to cross the mountain between Mountain City and Bristol ever again. I've driven 321 between Boone and Hampton once, and while it wasn't a picnic, I liked it better than 421.

I took 421 out of Boone, headed west on SR 67 at Mountain City, then on to 321/19E for the final stretch to Johnson City. SR 67 is a more scenic alternative to taking 321 all the way to the Tri-Cities (with a lot more opportunities to pass slow traffic) and only adds 5-10 minutes of extra travel time, although if you drive faster it's likely on par with or edges out 321, especially considering you can speed on 421 + 67 but can't really speed on 321.
I actually think I prefer it to 321 due to the passing opportunities - 321 is very curvy between Vilas and Hampton, so you only get a handful of risky passing zones to try your luck with, I'd never mess with them at night. I don't mind the curves themselves but it's getting stuck behind tourists/slow drivers that makes me go bonkers. SR 67 has a generous amount of climbing lanes and passing zones though, with traffic light enough that you have good opportunities to use them, and the views are a lot more impressive. I really want to drive it when the leaves change.

Took US-412 out of Arkansas week before last, but didn't re-enter by road. Took a one-way road trip with my brother and his 1996 4Runner back to his condo 4 blocks from the Space Needle in Seattle. It was an almost 3000 mile trip that was on Interstate highways less than half the time.
Took US-412 west until it ended on I-25 in NM. Popped over through Cimarron Canyon to Angel Fire, Taos, and Santa Fe before running I-25 up to Colorado Springs, actually Manitou Springs specifically. Did Garden of the Gods, Glen Eyrie and the Pikes Peak cog rail, then took US-24 all the way through Leadville and Minturn until taking I-70 to Grand Junction. Then popped down to Moab via a BLM semi-paved road to UT-128 for the most breaktaking stretch of the whole trip. Took US-191 up through UT until US-6, then US-6 into the Salt Lake metro. Took I-15 through the most horrid stretch of travel for the whole trip, and it wasn't even close to rush hour! That metro seems to carry on FOREVER. Took US-89 to Logan, UT, then UT-30 back to I-15. Continued on I-15 up to Pocatello, then Idaho Falls. Left Idaho Falls and drove onward on I-15 next to Butte, then I-90 to Missoula, MT. Took US-93N/MT/ID-200W to Sandpoint, ID, then US-95S to Coeur d'Alene. Finished I-90W to Seattle, did a large amount of walking, including onto the Bainbridge Is. ferry and back, then darted back to NWA as directly as possible through Denver by air a couple days later. Seattle sure isn't as fun a place as the last several times I visited. Suffered through some really pushy panhandlers that would try to work you for a block and a half before moving on to the next target. A lot more tents in the streets, and one tweaker looked like he was humping a car door, but in reality was breaking into it in broad daylight, likely due to the absence of unappreciated and de-funded police. Sure must grind on the soul to deal with that on a regular basis. I pray for my brother and am glad he got out for a couple of weeks to get some perspective of normalcy in Arkansas.
I had forgotten about TN 67. I think I've been across it from Mountain City to 321 once, but remember very little about it, and don't remember the passing lanes.

Yesterday: Washington Boulevard (VA-27) crossing from Virginia onto Columbia Island in DC, then back into Virginia via Memorial Avenue to enter Arlington Cemetery. Later the same hour, back into DC via Memorial Avenue, then back into Virginia via I-395 over the 14th Street Bridge (there was so much traffic waiting to enter the cemetery that it was easier to go over Memorial Bridge and loop past the Jefferson Memorial than it would have been to continue around Memorial Circle to access I-395 from Columbia Island). Yesterday was Wreaths Across America family passholder day. Unlike last year, they didn't open up the service exit from the cemetery onto Columbia Pike to expedite traffic flow leaving the cemetery, which meant it took 20 minutes to half an hour to go from the cemetery end of Memorial Avenue to Memorial Bridge.
I live in Ann Arbor so this is usually pretty boring -- US-23 if going east, I-94 if going west. Most recent one that was a different road was US-2 leaving and I-94 returning (did a loop around lake Michigan).

The last time I crossed a state border, I used US 80 To go from Georgia to cross the Alabama border, and I used the same highway back.
Walt Whitman Bridge (I-76), yesterday. Drove to Philly on my lunch break, paid the toll, picked up a hoagie from a small deli in South Philly, came home, ate lunch.
For me, I-93 MA/NH. I went to Vermont to go skiing this past weekend and entered New Hampshire on I-93 and crossed back into Massachusetts on the same highway.

I haven't left Arizona since October of 2020. When I did. I left via AZ State Route 78 (which turns into NM 78 at the state line) and returned via US 70.

When I lived with my parents in Newark, DE, I was very close to Maryland and not too far from Pennsylvania. When I got my own place in 2002, I found myself getting in the car and leaving the state spontaneously a lot, especially on weekends. One of my coping strategies was to take I-95 north to US 322, then the Commodore Barry across to I-295 south. I found the relatively rural stretch of 295 in New Jersey refreshing. Then I'd take the Delaware Memorial back into Delaware.
I also developed a four-state loop, taking DE 896 north out of Newark, clipping Maryland, then taking PA 896 to PA 841, to US 1, to US 322 to I-295. My apartment was relatively close to the bridge, just off US 40 right after it splits off of US 13. (I'd often walk to the McDonald's at Hares Corder.)

Well, I ended up taking a different route to go take my friend to Mt. Mitchell since he'd never been to the mountains until I brought him to Tennessee. I figured I'd go big or go home with showing him around. I left TN via SR 395 and ended up taking US 221 into SC in order to clinch the route in NC. Everything else was the same.
Left on I-75, returned on I-69.
I have a new entry into this thread. Left Kentucky entering Tennessee on US 127 and re-entered on US 27.
I left Michigan using I-75, on a trip to Georgia. I also returned to Michigan on I-75.

Took a day trip to Louisville yesterday -- entered Kentucky on I-65, re-entered Indiana on I-64.

We went to the Nats game yesterday, so we drove over to the Branch Avenue Metro station in Maryland to avoid congestion downtown (there was a music festival) and to avoid having to change trains. It works quite well, but man, it reminded me why I hate the PG County Beltway so much. Lots of absurdly aggressive driving, tailgating, weaving in and out, etc. On the way over, coming off the bridge I was in the right lane and the guy in front of me was doing about 60 mph. But the guy in the left lane was going a little slower than that, so I couldn't go anywhere. Meanwhile, the dumbshit redneck behind me in his stupid pickup was inches from my bumper (had to turn off the adaptive cruise control–if it braked suddenly, the redneck would have rear-ended us). So the redneck became furious, whipped across to the left between two cars, and passed using the left shoulder, never mind that there were two trucks up ahead so he didn't get anywhere anyway.
Very boring answer. Drove to Kansas City via I-70 and returned on I-70.

Thursday (the 8th) was my first time crossing the US-Canada land border since January 2020! I crossed into Michigan on the Ambassador Bridge around 8pm and had zero line up, which was great. The bridge lanes (1 lane each way) are very narrow for trucks though with the construction.
On Sunday, I came back to Ontario through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, which took about 15 minutes.

Likewise, when I drive to Mexico, my entry requirements are governed by laws pertaining to "land and sea" entries–even though I cross a river every time I drive into Mexican territory. For example, my children are able to use passport cards, even though the border is on neither land nor sea.

I can think of some interesting other ones over the years like one time when I lived in NC and drove to DE (NC→VA on US 13; VA→NC on I-95).
AR-43->MO-43 to go to Grand Lake tubing on Saturday.
MO-43->AR-43 that evening after passing within a few feet of the AR/MO/OK Tripoint for the second time that day, and shortly thereafter just about plowed a fawn running across the road after its mama. Couldn't dodge while pulling a boat, but did manage to brake hard enough to miss and alarm everyone in the truck. If you can't Dodge it, Ram it! Would have been the second time I hit a deer with the truck while loaded otherwise. First time was with a Lance 1161 truck camper in the bed leaving the north rim of the Grand Canyon back in '04. Was coming around a corner already, so no swerving would have been possible without running into the oncoming lane around a blind corner, or tumping over sideways trying to turn right harder. Deer went flying through the air as viewed in my outside left mirror. Pulled over at the next available turn out and checked out the front end. Tuft of hair stuck between the chrome and plastic on the front bumper, but no damage to the truck. Can't vouch for the flying deer.
Last Friday, I left Massachusetts on MA/RI-146. Today, I returned via I-95.

For my Québec trip last month, I left Maine (and the USA) via US 201 (and Maine Route 6) which changed to Québec Route 173 en route to Québec.

Haven't been to the new one they built on land, but I spent many hours in the poker room of the old boat.
Out of Michigan via I-94 into Indiana.
Back in via US-2 (twice!).
Took I-94 all the way to the end in Billings including a stop at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
Then 90 to Missoula when I jumped back on US-12 (which my office is on back in Michigan) to go down the specatuclar Louis and Clark trail through Idaho.
Then I-84 to Hood River where ended up staying in Government Camp OR for about 10 days.
On the return I-84 to I-82 which split off onto an obviously archaic freeway of US-395. Had to do a quick google search of why this thing existed in the middle of nowhere and the area turned out to be Hanford Enrichment site (wished i would have known ahead of time). Anyhow we continued to I-90 and then through Spokane and Coeur D'Alane where we turned north to the nice town of Sandpoint. At that point it was US-2 most of the way home which a slide through the absolutely terrifying Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park. Followed by a very long time on US-2 until I was back in Michigan ... and then out for 12 miles and back in.
About 4850 miles round trip not including the time spent in Cascadia.
Good trip.

I'm certain I would have enjoyed it immensely if I had been driving, as I actually enjoy twisty roads.
But being a passenger on a road carved out of a cliff, my acrophobia kicked in a big way. I could hardly look out the window on the last segment before Logan's Pass; I fully understand it makes no logical sense.
What is really weird as a skiier in my late teens and early twenties I used to not think twice about soaring off decently sized cliffs. Somewhere along life's path, that changed. In my 50s, I still love skiing even speeding down the double-black steeps where there is actual danger ... and yet dread each chairlift ride.

Funny. I was there two years ago and the road was fully paved, and not in terrible shape.

or US 1 if visiting family in far northern Delaware, or friends in extreme southern PA (this is my scenic and slightly afield "shunpike and also avoid I-95 in Delaware south of Wilmington" route).
Very rarely, I-70 -- used to do this more often when I was doing more pleasure driving.

Laughing at this thread's title again, since I left and returned to Aragon on foot outside any marked trails. To make things more interesting, I crossed again into La France not far from, and over, the point I did so last time.
I left MI on I-75 and returned on I-69. In between, I went from OH to IN on US-24.

When I crossed the state line going south the only sign marking the border stated "You will do better in Toledo." I thought this would be the case as the course I was paying there was a bit easier, but my putting was bad and my score at Ottawa Park ended up being 2 over par.
I'm not sure how this works in my case...I left my old state of Oklahoma on I-40 and entered my new state of Nevada on I-11.

This is the second time I've driven into PA and like my 2018 trip... it was raining pretty hard this time around upon entering PA. There were a lot of strange routings on the way up to St. Johnsbury area for me, starting and ending in Arlington, MA:
- US 3 thru MA and NH, asides from the lane drop in Nashua Exit 8, was free flowing compared to 93 from MA Exits 40-46 - there was a lot of volume between these points.
- Waze suggested taking US 3 between Manchester and Concord, which took about an hour to get by. Most of the traffic was south of Suncook... once past there it was free flowing to 93 North at Exit 15E-W. Don't know how long it took if you were to say, take NH 3A to Concord instead. It did switch constantly between taking US 3 or NH 28 before the split in Suncook, but I opted to stay on US 3 to Concord.
- The NH and VT 25 detour to VT I-91 was kind of a last second decision before arriving at Plymouth, it was mostly to avoid Notch traffic. I heard DOT/State Police were doing something like this (https://arc-anglerfish-arc2-prod-bostonglobe.s3.amazonaws.com/public/4T4TB3VBYYI6HFFYWZK5AN2PPM.jpg) at Exit 33 NB's or 35 SB's onramp, to help US 3 traffic merge before the Franconia Notch Parkway, which caused delays on 93 for quite some distance.
- On the way back, in VT, I was switching between US 5 and I-91 a few times up till White River Junction, where I ended up on I-89 South, though I did hop on US 4 for a bit, and then got off 89 at Exit 2 to make my way to NH 3A to avoid Everett Turnpike traffic. Once south of Hooksett, it was all free flowing on 93 all the way to MA.
