California State Route 254/Avenue of the Giants is a 32 mile segment of former US 101 on the Eel River and South Fork Eel River watersheds of Humboldt County.  Avenue of the Giants was built as part of the 1909 First State Highway Bond Act Legislative Route 1 which was known as the Redwood Highway.  The Redwood Highway/Legislative Route largely became part of US Route 101 in November 1926 which included what is now Avenue of the Giants.  Flooding on the Eel River watershed in 1955 largely spurred the modernization of US 101 onto a mostly limited access grade on higher elevations.  The former surface route of US 101 from Miranda north to the vicinity of Pepperwood was declared as Avenue of the Giants in August of 1960.  Given Avenue of the Giants was mostly aligned through Humboldt Redwoods State Park it was initially going to be maintained by the State Division of Parks and Beaches.  Avenue of the Giants was transferred to the Division of Highways in 1963 and was assigned California State Route 254.  California State Route 254/Avenue of the Giants took it's current form in 1967 when it was legislatively extended south of Phillipsville.

And it's a terrific drive, well worth the extra few minutes from US 101 unless you're fleeing a fire or something.
