Title: A non-roadgeek's road photos across America, 2010-
Post by: wphiii on January 08, 2013, 08:52:35 PM
Now that I've discovered this subforum, it's given me the inspiration to go through my own collection of travel photos from the past few years and compile the better road shots. Admittedly, not being a true roadgeek, taking pictures of the road itself has generally not been a main focus with my photography. Thus, these photos probably won't offer much in terms of real roadgeek significance, but I'm posting them just because it's turning out to be an interesting exercise for me, personally - to see where the road does wind up as a primary focus at times throughout my travels, and to see how that happens across the remarkable variety and diversity of landscapes that this country has to offer.

Also if you do care to look, please bear with the quality of the photos, which is pretty poor in the earlier examples. It does get significantly better as the time goes on, though.

Sorry to have hijacked your own thread with my pictures.  But, I was thinking....is there a set of criteria for what makes road pictures "non-roadgeek" road photos?  I tried to include ones that are simple candid shots of the road–ones that aren't really "of" anything.

Great job, but just because it doesn't have an EXTREME CLOSE-UP of a sign, doesn't mean they aren't road photos.  I like your philosophy about taking a road to see where it goes, because that's my primary road interest.  Of course, i'll grab a sign or something if it is of interest or if that's a specific goal of the trip.  But photographing the towns, bridges, or taking the time to do a composed shot is just as good.

I kinda call it destination roadgeeking.  In where, hey I'm going to do a day trip to x or y, and here's what I found along the way.  You are taking photos of what interest you, and that's the most important thing.

No worries at all, man. I wasn't trying to define anything - the use of the term "non-roadgeek" was really intended just to describe myself as someone who doesn't quite identify with the impressive passion about roads that is shared by many on this forum.

As I was saying, this was primarily a reflective endeavor. My interest in roads lies almost entirely in the places they connect, and the things that are happening along/around them, rather than the mechanics of the roads themselves. Through that lens, I've always subconsciously felt that when I take a picture of a scene that I find interesting, it may happen to have a road in it, as opposed to being a photo of a road. But after going through this exercise of picking out some of my favorite photos that "happen to have a road in them" and especially after seeing them all lined up together, it makes me start to see how the road itself might be a more integral part of my photography than I've been cognizant of.

If this thread sparks a discussion similar to this thread (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=7665.0) that you posted a while back, which I thought led to some fascinating discourse, then I'd be thrilled. Likewise, if people are inspired to post their own photos that they are maybe now thinking about in a different light, then I'd be doubly thrilled.

I don't consider myself a roadgeek either.  I don't "geek out" about roads, even though they are a strong interest of mine.  I do "geek out" about cars from the '50s to the early '70s, guitars, and music.

First of all, you are a gifted photographer. You have a knack for capturing the essence of wherever you've gone in a single picture. I feel like I just traveled the country going through your photos.
Second of all, and I am not joking, this is my favorite roadgeek collection of photos ever. Yes, we all love old signs and alignments and whatever, but this truly lets me see roads in their natural habitat. When I go on vacations, I take photos of a certain subset of things. I won't take scenery photos unless it's something amazing (like your Million Dollar Highway views), but what truly makes a vacation enjoyable and relaxing to me is the time spent seeing new scenery and absorbing a different part of America than I've ever seen before. (I've come to like night driving less, sadly, because I just can't see as much around me.)
I didn't know I had an unscratched itch until I viewed these. I don't know what it will affect in the future regarding my photography, but I've been touched. Please keep sharing.

I absolutely love this picture, and it perfectly captures the non-roadgeek highway picture idea for me.  I've always enjoyed the Blue Line stations that are accessed via highway bridges (e.g. Harlem and Cicero).

I sometimes think the meaning of roadgeek is taken to literally sometimes.  Who among us doesn't love the first time a city skyline makes its appearance when when drive through on the freeway?  Who doesn't love the mountain road that provides scenic views of the sparkling blue river below?  Isn't roadgeeking sometimes just the love of being on the road?

This was a good set of photos wphiii.

FANTASTIC photos, indeed!  The one that slightly stood out among all of them (your photos are 9s and 10s, but this one is a 10+) was the New River Gorge Bridge coming out of the fog.  That bridge has been photographed many times, but to catch it like that...WOW.

Very much enjoyed your photos. I live not far away from the Pittsburgh area.

I'm similar to you in my appeal of roads. I've never gotten the whole 'sign' thing. Signs don't interest me. Roads, freeways, interchanges, and where the road leads is what interests me. I like following the expansion of new roads.

Returning from one of my weekend visits to Washington a couple of months ago, I decided to avoid the Turnpike entirely and take a "Blue Highways"-style meander through the MD/PA countryside. What is usually a 4-hour trip ended up taking nearly 7, but it was a lot of fun, and also gave me a good opportunity to practice my taking-photos-while-operating-a-moving-vehicle skills.

It's been defunct since 1991, when the access ramp on the Ohio side was destroyed to make room for the new-and-improved OH 7, and no provisions were ever made to reattach the bridge to the street grid. Somehow it has staved off demolition for over two decades, largely due to legal and financial issues (2/14)

As spring is upon us, I've been able to do a little rambling in recent weeks:

PA 45 east of State College, following the route of one of the original pre-motor Turnpikes in the state. (3/14)

Sunbury St (PA 61) through dreary Shamokin, a place that fascinates me because of how it (and many of the other small towns in PA coal country) was built to a level of density that wouldn't be out of place in say, a neighborhood in Philadelphia or Baltimore, very strange for a town of this size and so far removed from any major urban area. Now it is only about a third full when compared to its peak population, which adds to the weird feel. (3/14)

Abandoned portion of PA 61 south of Centralia, where a mine fire that started nearly 50 years ago continues to burn underground to this day. The resulting subsidence rendered unsafe this stretch of roadway, once the primary route in and out of the town. It can still be hiked on foot and is covered in graffiti. (3/14)

Further down the abandoned PA 61, where evidence of the structural problems caused by the underground fire can clearly be seen. Often times, smoke can be seen coming out of this fissure, but it was too cold and damp on this occasion - though the ground here is still warm enough to keep the snow from collecting. (3/14)

The windmills of PA 160. (4/14)

More PA 160, snaking towards Berlin. (4/14)

Not a road picture per se, but I like that here we have right next to each other both the pre-auto (Boston Store at left) and early-auto era way-stations along the Ohio & Erie Canal as it runs through Cuyahoga Valley National Park. (4/14)

Coming in Howard St, Akron just about manages to pull off looking like a real city. (4/14)

Centralia is one of my favorite small (non-existent) towns. It's amazing what's become of this town, and only about a 2 hour drive from Philly. Pictures overlooking what was the town are incredible as well - it's a typical small PA town layout, with a grid street system, with curbcuts, driveways and sidewalks leading to nowhere. The houses and buildings - almost all gone. I was here a number of years ago. I still have a few bare sticks I picked up while walking thru there, a result of the trees dying from the heat of the ground.

The Yuengling Brewery is not too far away from here. I intend one of these days to do the brewery tour there some day, then head back to Centralia to check out the town again.

Centralia is a place that I have always wanted to go, but have never yet made it.  It's an eerily interesting ongoing natural disaster.  I was actually talking about it with a coworker the other day, who was familiar with it as well.

Thanks for the pictures.

There are a bunch of photos in there that I looked at and recognized as places I've been to lots of times. The one in Cumberland, MD, is on Queen City Drive just north of Baltimore Avenue. My grandparents lived up on the hill not far from there (Goethe Street to be specific). Also, since I lived in Allegany County and went to college in Pennsylvania, I often used PA 160 (it was a little bit shorter than taking I-68 to US 219).

More great photos.  Now I'm ready for another road trip.

These photos make me want to take a roadtrip that involves being more than 60 miles away from my house. The last time that happened was in 1998 when I moved from Florida into New Jersey. But I can only remember various things about that trip!!! Oh, the things that I wish I could experience... :-(

My personal favorites of your newest set of pictures are the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and the cut through Sideling Hill on I-68. I-68 looks very beautiful for an Interstate, from what I've seen on GMSV and from others' photos of the highway.

I have been very fortunate in that I have been on a good bit of road trips in my life (usually for vacation and on mission trips). If only I could have been on more drives in general if my parents didnt hate driving  :-D

@wphiii, awesome pics once again! You may not claim to be a roadgeek but your pictures make a roadgeek smile!  :spin:

More great photos.  Now I'm ready for another road trip.

These photos make me want to take a roadtrip that involves being more than 60 miles away from my house. The last time that happened was in 1998 when I moved from Florida into New Jersey. But I can only remember various things about that trip!!! Oh, the things that I wish I could experience... :-(

My personal favorites of your newest set of pictures are the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and the cut through Sideling Hill on I-68. I-68 looks very beautiful for an Interstate, from what I've seen on GMSV and from others' photos of the highway.

1. Get job.  Anything that pays.  Suck it up and save–if you're living rent-free, it's the freest money you'll ever know.

2. Take long weekend, pick random direction, go.

Apologies for what is going to be a big dump all at once, due in part the painstaking process of porting all of my photos over to Flickr. This has been long overdue move that was finally spurred by getting fed up once and for all with Facebook's irritating tendency to arbitrarily change the URLs of a given photo's direct link every few months, resulting in broken img tags galore. So without further ado, here's what I've been up to over the last year as it pertains to fun pictures of roads...

My home growing up (and where my parents still live) is about 2 miles from this spot, on a road off of Rt. 130 even windier and more narrow than this.
There are some spots near here (and possibly one along 130 real close by) where, if you can see between the trees (or there is a clearing), and it's a nice crisp, clear day, you can see the USX & Mellon Towers on the horizon (and even more downtown Pittsburgh buildings if you have binoculars).

I don't recall ever having noticed seeing the skyscrapers from here (though I wouldn't have been keeping an eye out for them), but it strikes me as a spot where it might be possible, if anywhere along 130 is.

Thanks in no small part to El Niño, the weather in much of the northeastern U.S. has remained passable long past the usual seasonal sell-by date. A mild and dry forecast gives me the itchiest of feet, and I've been lucky to sneak away for two separate spur of the moment pick-a-direction-and-go day trips over the past month-plus.

This really has nothing to do with roads, but I just wanted to plug Kinzua Bridge State Park because it's got to be one of the coolest and most unheralded public spaces in this part of the country. In short, a 100-year-and-change-old railroad bridge was destroyed by a tornado a little over a decade ago and rather than do something silly like clean up the resulting mess, PA DCNR decided to leave it as is and let people wander amongst the wreckage at their leisure. Must-see for anyone who happens to find themselves on the PA Northern Tier at some point.

Wow, I just made it. I read it was offered to be turned over to the State but the State didn't want to deal with it, which is a shame because if made appropriately safe it could have made for an awesome overlook/easier means for crossing between the trails on opposite sides of the gorge.

Once you're that far down off the ridge (even though your still high up enough for that view), you're too low to see downtown PGH.  It's up higher in the wooded section (so you have to peer thru the trees).  You can also see the taller buildings from the top of Three Mile Hill on PA-31 as well.

I've been there twice, but still haven't walked across the valley floor.  I am filled with awe and dread there, though less so now that the park interpretive program has shifted to embrace the destruction.

I was frankly astonished that there's basically no restriction on where people can walk around. I could have spent another hour or two there but didn't want to run out of daylight with that much driving left to do.

Could you still grab the railings without the risk of them breaking off in your hands?

And I thought I was on shaky ground walking on the turntable of Greenport LIRR station back in September.

It hardly even feels like we had a winter this year; while the larger-scale ramifications of this may be cause for some concern, I'm not going to complain about how easy it's made it to stay on the road over the past few months.
