Is the 57 CA outline what was adopted to become the 70 outline?

no.  different shape.  the 70 is based on a 1966 Pennsylvania design.

however, some states, which officially use 70 spec, actually put the 57 CA into a black square and call it a day.

Ellen tweets: "This is a great anti drunk driving campaign. At least I hope it is, or else this town is really depressing."

I'm pretty sure I've seen a pic of this sign before.  Anyone know where it is?

Seems like it might actually be misleading though.  What if someone needs to go to a hospital quickly?  Somehow I doubt there's a left-side exit ahead leading to one.
Wait, it's all Ohio? Always has been.

I'd love to know if that is photoshopped or not!

I believe it's real.  I want to say I've seen a sign like that somewhere, but not sure of the location.

I was sure this was real, considering the standard font and arrows.  But I just noticed the elliptical corners.  Either this was photoshopped, and the base sign had a different aspect ratio (but then why is the border width the same for the horizontal and vertical borders?) or the guy drafting the sign likes to go to extra trouble for seemingly no benefit.

[Throgs Neck/Bronx Whitestone]

I think I spotted that pair once in 2007.  didn't have the time to grab a photo since I was already making a turn off the road when I saw the signs, and I had to drop someone off at JFK - on the other side of town! - on a tight schedule.

Endangered species alert!

I wouldn't complain if one of the Plain White Circle/Square states adopted this as their state route shield.

Button Copy signs in Florida (there is not one but a second on nearby that I took a picture of, but I haven't put it on my laptop yet).

agentsteel53

good to see those are still around!  I believe that is near this red US-1 shield.

I think that is the last red US-1 shield in Florida.  It has a 1992 installation sticker on the back.

Actually, seems to me you don't even need to make a U-turn.  Just go straight.

This should be in the worst thread. The 1 is decent but the A1A is horrible.

...NW corner of Military Trail and Palmetto Park Road in Boca Raton. Passed by this sign for many years. It's an ugly, imbalanced assembly of signs, but the red US 1 is a throwback, so I hope it stays. It's tough getting a shot of that sign, as its behind some guardrail but also alongside a canal. No place to pull over...

There were a rash of those ugly state road signs in southern Florida during the early-90s. I'm all for a little variation, but they're nearly impossible to read and they are mostly gone now. Palm Beach County seemed to get the most of them, as they had many road improvements during  that time.

There is a collection of odd but similar signs at the western end of Clint Moore Road at the intersection with State Road 7 out in west Boca.  The US 441 shield is a cutout. :hmmm:

A fellow I follow on Flickr (say that three times fast) photographs stuff all over Florida and occasionally finds a colored shield.  Here are two.

I saw those (and favorited them). They were nice finds.

I saw a photo of this gantry and resolved to find it, having absolutely no luck because I never thought to look on an active and current state highway

I actually do have some very good photos - but it was about a 1/4 mile walk from the residential neighborhood in which I parked, to the signs themselves.

In Wellington on Forest Hill Boulevard WB [SR 882] at SR 7, the US 441 shields are cutouts as well. Also in that area, mainly on 441, the US 1 shields on the overhead guide signs are black!

that's unusual, but not unheard-of for Florida.  There is a black 231 out there somewhere too.

can you get some photos of the black 1s please?
