Kind of reminds me of the 'download' button you see next to a picture or file on the internet.

Yes.  As a stranger to town, it would make me wonder if there were two different routes, one west and one towards New York.

spooky

am I the only one who can tell that's just something that was stuck on there and doesn't have anything to do with the sign?

Boston has some of the neatest graffiti artists in the world?

Definitely some type of sticker graffiti, called  "U-Down"

Definition:  http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=U-Down

Official Website:  http://udown.com/

Some risk taker(s) will affix the logo to a sign whether it's a roadside sign off the shoulder, or on an overhead BGS.  A couple of years back, there were two such signs I saw in Colorado with the U-Down logo attached (one overhead BGS, one Blue Services sign).  CDOT had removed the stickers within a month or 2 after appearing on them.

Apologies for getting us off topic as this *certainly* is not a "best of" sign, but this SoCal 5 Fwy sign has a "UDown" sticker as well. Not only is this this ugly due to delamination(?), but as you can see from Google Street View history, the OC CalTrans District can't be bothered with removing the sticker after 8 years or so.

This sign looks old. Like, really old. https://www.google.com/maps/@34.0243847,-86.0310355,3a,15y,291.17h,106.86t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sOdCzYmt4jG97jlFOxCv5WA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Also, unrelated, but what is the 'historic marker' that the signs in Gadsden keep referring to?

:wow:

1950's maybe. Even 1940's? That old font looks to be that old.
Most likely 1950s or 1960s, as the signals in it are Eagle Flat-backs. I actually have a photo of that sign on my external hard drive at home, and I think I have a photo of it on my Flickr. If anyone can find it on my Flickr, feel free to post it on here for me.
Here's my photo of the sign:

Took that back in March of this year.
It's all fun & games until someone summons Cthulhu and brings about the end of the world.

I also collect traffic lights, road signs, fans, and railroad crossing equipment.

Indeed, one of Steve's I-90 pages has a pic of the sign in its unadulterated form, with a less-faded shield too.

There's a second one in the city, same fonts and all. I think it's used for another school zone in Gadsden.

Question from the southern boy. Is that sign referencing New York state, which I-90 definitely travels to, or New York City by way of I-84/I-684 or another route?

Yes!  You can make your decision farther upstream.

Mergingtraffic

There's nothing really special about this sign, but I like the fact the crosswalk is in the sign. It makes it more noticeable in my opinion than with just the PED figure.

Now, time for some non-reflective button copy from Baltimore
I only take pics of good looking signs. Long live non-reflective button copy!

Is it my imagination that the S in 'South' is more bold than the rest of the word 'OUTH'?

Edit: Never mind, looks like I'm going crazy.

Not necessarily, that's just how this whole initial cap thing works now. The first letter is so much larger, it appears to be an entirely different weight.

From what I've seen on other threads, it would look better if the initial cap was E and the rest was E(M).

EDIT: This is how it might look if the initial cap was E and the rest was E(M) (ignore the other personal changes):

Awesome photos, the only ones I gripe about are the first three.

Not all are supposed to be best of. The stop sign is ugly, but what's wrong with the first 2?
