I don't want users to be able to mess up conversations by mass editing or deleting posts. Think before you post on the internet.
That's called "moderating".
I think people should have a 15-minute window to edit a post.
However, the point that has been brought up before is that some threads are constructed in such a way that the OP edits the original post with new info as it becomes available.
If a user is found to be editing/deleting posts disruptively, they may be given a warning for disruptive behavior and/or the ability to edit or delete posts disabled on a per-user basis.
The vast majority of users use the edit function constructively, so disabling edit/deletion rights globally would not be beneficial to the forum.

Too heavy-handed IMHO. There have been a few times where I've noticed a typo in my post, and my OCD compels me to fix it.
In any case my edits do not totally change the intent of the post. I want to be able to change "I-496" when I meant to type "I-495". As opposed to a Fictional thread that had its entire content changed to "7".
Edit: Changed "compiles" typo to "compels". I didn't purposely plan that! Really!

Thank you. Most people are sensible about using the edit button, and I do not like using forums where this ability is removed.
I'm strongly against restrictions, including the 15-minute window.

There have been times where I make a post containing two things and the previous poster ninja-edits, making me delete one of the two, as it's already answered or no longer relevant.

The forum software does not have an option to establish an editing limit by word count.
I think editing a title should need mod approval. That way we know what the thread was originally about. Other edits, no.

Those of you who habitually quote the OP in your replies are the real MVPs. Steve and I were able to revert a few of these post-blankings because of that.

The problem is that the forum software doesn't make any distinction between editing the first post in the thread (which what the thread title derives from) or any other post in the thread. There's also no way to "require mod approval" other than to outright deny edit rights and require any edit to be made by a moderator. (This means that we would have to spend more time servicing these requests and less time writing important posts like the history of Grand Alan Garfunkel or whatever.)
I agree that a time limit stinks. I'm a member of another forum that limits the editing time to five minutes after posting. It's not enough time, especially given how often you get autocorrect- or touchscreen-related typos (neither of which were issues when that forum was founded)
I'm in the habit of saying why I edited a post; I got that habit from the same forum noted above because their software has a box for "Reason for editing." It's optional, but I like the idea.
On the whole, the idea that some people may edit in annoying ways is not a valid reason to remove the option for the rest of us. Dealing with problem users as they arise is exactly the right approach.
Edited per the other post down below.

"One person used a thing to do something sucky so now we're going to make it a rule that NOBODY can have it!" was a fundamental management axiom at my last job, which was one of the reasons why working there was so obnoxious.

No, that wasn't exactly my interpretation of "dealing with problem users as they arise". I'm thinking more along the lines of a PM that said something like "Stop talking about stats and starting stats threads or the page will be canned for everyone!" That would have gotten the message across.
Instead, I feel really disappointed that I wrecked it for everyone without realizing until it was too late.

Posts and threads started for every single day, new users for every single day, most posted in threads overall, most viewed threads, forum members with most logged in time, male:female ratio (I'm actually interested in this one), and a few other things that I can't remember.
I support bringing the stats back.

About the editing:
I generally do it after I post pictures. I always use Tapatalk to post them, so it's just easier for me to add context to them by going back into the browser and modifying it (especially if the post has more than one pic).
Also like others said, I might catch a slight typo and have to correct it lol

Wikipedia has a bot called SineBot. Here is its description:
QuoteSineBot is a bot that is designed to replace HagermanBot, which added {{Unsigned}} and {{UnsignedIP}} tags to unsigned edits made to talk pages as well as a handful of non-talk pages. The bot derives its name from a happy coincidence: "signing" on Wikipedia involves typing four tildes in a row (~~~~). Each tilde resembles the graphical representation of a sine function, and, of course, the very word "sine" is a homophone of "sign." Moreover, the word "sine" means "without" in the Latin language.

And be deprived of everlasting threads like "Sine salad"?
"Sine salad" was 100% intentional–intentionally misspelling "sign" as "sine" was a hallmark of MTR regular Otto Yamamoto's posting style. Since he also popularized the term "sine salad" to refer to any large mass of signage, it's arguably an error to not spell it like that.
Is it similar to cosine saled?
Tangentially related :bigass:

On the whole, the idea that some people may edit in annoying ways is not a valid reason to remove the option for the rest of us. Dealing with problem users as they arise is exactly the right approach.
"One person used a thing to do something sucky so now we're going to make it a rule that NOBODY can have it!" was a fundamental management axiom at my last job, which was one of the reasons why working there was so obnoxious.
I must say, that's pretty much exactly how I feel about the stats page being canned...
We should bring back the forum stats! It's been four years since all the incidents caused by them. (That thread about sleep patterns was my mistake and wasn't caused by that page)
What kind of stats were even on that page? I don't remember looking at it back when it was thing.
Posts and threads started for every single day, new users for every single day, most posted in threads overall, most viewed threads, forum members with most logged in time, male:female ratio (I'm actually interested in this one), and a few other things that I can't remember.
I support bringing the stats back.
I also agree. Those stats sound amazing.
They're really not that great. Admins still have access to them and I never really bother to look at them because they don't really provide much info that isn't just "huh, neat."
The male:female ratio is listed as 12.1:1. I am not certain how accurate this is because the gender selector is inelegant (doesn't cover nonbinary genders) and I don't believe specifying a gender is mandatory, and males are more likely to self-identify than non-males. Likewise, I'm sure there's at least one person who identifies as female in real life but chose to be categorized as male because she doesn't want to catch anyone's attention.
I have an idea: A change log where they can restore stuff.

Dang, that ratio is even worse than the ratio at my university. Ouch.

Not possible with the way the forum software is built, unfortunately. On a wiki, each revision is stored separately, and the user is shown the most recent version, which allows easy reversion to an older version. On this forum, whenever you edit a post, it completely replaces whatever version is already stored in the database. Thus why people editing their posts disruptively is a big deal.

Perhaps so, but I've found there was an equal amount of vegans out east but also way more boredom.
When I lived in Michigan, Illinois, Florida and Connecticut I struggled to find things to do on days off. At least out in California, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico I always could go find a hike or exciting drive for the day. Really the only State out east which I lived that had a copious amount of recreational opportunities to my liking was North Carolina. But then again, I'm always willing to try some place new and new things. Hell, I wouldn't have met my wife I hadn't moved to California.
To that end, I did work in Southern California twice before my current stint in the Central Valley. I can't say that SoCal was really for me, but at least I gave it a try twice with two work assignments. The difference from there to where I'm at now is night and day. For the moment I'm content but I wouldn't discount the possibility of another move in the future. Had I held a childish grudge about my previous experiences from Southern California I would be missing on a lot of good things.
So maybe there is some lessons in there for you. It might do you well not be so one tracked and narrow minded with your approach to life.

Tell all your female friends about how awesome road signs are! Then notice how many fewer female friends you have. Whoops.
Ah, the few of them I have already know. I just embrace it at this point. Maybe one day I'll actually be blessed with someone who cares as much about Road Sign UNO as I do.
My wife actually was the one who came up with the idea for the Sign Garden:

I do have a I-81 but I also have:
- CA 76
- US 31
- Several variations on US 89
- CA 7 and US 7
79, and I'm assuming you are from CA since you have hundreds?
For the moment, just one of many places I've lived.
Yeah who would want to live in CA anyways?
People who want to live within two hours of four National Parks, who want access to some of the best driving roads anywhere and were paid to do so.
It's a bunch of vegans in the desert.
Perhaps so, but I've found there was an equal amount of vegans out east but also way more boredom.

LOL! Nothing to do in Florida? Where in Florida were you. Florida has beaches. Connecticut and Illinois are boring. Michigan has fishing and also is boring for the most part. Personally I don't really have any desire to move anywhere west of WV. Wisconsin is pretty. But I hate CA, ND, KS, and all of the west is a hippies wonderland. It is gross, ugly, and has no scenery. I must credit California for big waves though!

The rural Mountain West plus the ND/SD/NE/KS/OK/TX central column is a hippie wonderland?
Also, what happened to Connecticut's beaches?

I'm sure that guy would say something about Connecticut's Beaches. But yes, it is gross. The desert is so gross, and The Northwest is disgusting, and everywhere west of Kentucky is really disgusting. But there are some pretty areas, but nothing west of Kansas.

And also everywhere west of Mississippi should be split up between Mexico and Canada but that would never happen.

Tampa Area, Orlando, Jacksonville (briefly) and even Key West. I can't say flat terrain, boating and theme parks are my thing. But I don't "hate" any of Florida though, don't forget you're the one who used that terminology to describe a place. At the very least I was willing to try some place new before formulating an opinion, it doesn't sounds you are capable of doing the same.
Nonetheless, we all not much more than subjective opinions and differing tastes. If you like the East Coast that's fine. But don't expect to have good times on a forum when you say you "hate" place and display obvious disdain for particular groups of people.

Possibly because your opinions come off as uninformed and unfounded at best, and bigoted at worst. California is a massive state and covers a lot of different types of areas, from big cities to mountains to deserts to forests. To simply say the whole thing is "gross" pretty heavily implies that you haven't thought about your opinion for more than the time it took to type it into the post box.
I, personally, don't really like Texas, because its culture is really not my thing, some decisions its government makes are frankly scary and/or appalling to me, and I find myself getting exhausted from the more obnoxious elements of the place whenever I spend too much time there. But even then I don't think the whole state is gross. I had a blast on my trip to Port Aransas, despite getting the worst sunburn of my life. And there are lots more things to see and do in Texas that I want to experience someday, so I know I'm going to be back at some point.
The wise roadgeek knows never to voice a strong opinion of any place that's blank on their mob-rule map.

Eww! They are all ugly and overrated. Yellowstone has a good name, because I like the color Yellow.
If you keep posting ridiculous comments like this, no one is going to take you seriously.
I don't understand why nobody wouldn't take me seriously after me stating my opinions. If someone likes gross CA, I can't change them. Nor should they. It is my opinion and it is their opinion to like the west.
You really have to wonder why people don't take you seriously? Have you actually read some of the stuff you've posted?
I have and I don't understand why people won't take me seriously. Enlighten me.
I'm reasonably certain at this point that you're either too young or not intelligent enough to comprehend. Hence my earlier suggestion that you might want to throw in the towel on the forum. At the moment you're on the way to becoming the new TheAlan360. The fact that you can't see it is...odd.
I won't be leaving the forum. But just because I make unrealistic highways, and that I don't like most of the U.S. I'm sorry that this is my opinions.
We had plenty of absurd fictional highway nonsense before you. That isn't the reason you've found yourself in this predicament.
Why because my opinion doesn't align with yours? Just because I don't like the west doesn't mean I'm too young or have an IQ of 0.
It's a good thing Oklahoma doesn't have an I-144, or it would also be gross.

Really I can care less about your opinions, one way or another it means nothing to me. The fact that you think that I care for some reason is speaking more to the underlying cause of your issues on the forum.
Let me rephrase before I let this mad experiment in Social Darwinism continue unabated. Your actions on this forum (like bizarre edits and thinking people are yelling at you) suggest you aren't very intelligent or you may have a severe social disorder. The fact that you can't see why your own actions cause you harm socially seemingly goes completely over your head. You beyond help at this point and fully self convinced that on your view of everyone else here. We don't hate you, we aren't yelling at you and nobody probably has disdain for you. But we can only say those things so nicely for so long before it starts to become funny when you don't get it.
Let me just say, for the record:
Virginia is gross.

I just want to publicly admit that this took me a stupid amount of time to get, mostly because I got hung up on trying to figure out how 9A = 154 and getting sidetracked converting 9A to hexadecimal and 0xCA to decimal, trying to find some sort of correlation.
It's not actually that deep.

My wife had a boss named Virginia who, after my wife got in a car accident that totaled her car and sent her to the hospital, said "Well I guess you'd better find a way to get up here so you can find out whether you still have a job or not." She also wouldn't let her get a covid test when I strongly suspected I had covid (and turned to be right) because the paperwork on her end would have been too hard.
Virginia is gross.

We all have different opinions and preferences. My dislike of cities is well-known. I hate traffic jams, I hate crowds, I hate long lines, and all those other things that one would associate with a big city. I'm not big into the arts and sculpture and paintings and that sort of stuff you'd find in a museum. But I can totally understand why some love the hustle and bustle of the city and all the amenities, and dislike a rural area.
But I cannot understand how anyone cannot be appreciative of the beauty of a place like Yellowstone or Grand Canyon. The views are breathtaking. I'm not an outdoors person, and wouldn't go hiking or camping in one of those places like my brother would, but those are natural wonders of the world.
