SLIDELL, La. – As construction crews work to complete the Twin Span Bridge, motorist will see possible delays as they are shifted from the old structure to new one.

Currently, drivers eastbound use a combination of the new eastbound bridge and the westbound bridge, and drivers westbound use the old eastbound bridge.  However, March 12, crews will move eastbound traffic to the new eastbound bridge.  Westbound traffic is planned to be moved off the bridge by late March, early April.

" Once the new traffic alignment is fully implemented, east and westbound drivers will share the new eastbound approaches. The approaches will accommodate two lanes of traffic in each direction, while the mainline sections of the new bridges will feature three travel lanes in each direction," said Sherry Dupre, DOTD spokeswoman.

"The temporary sharing of the eastbound approaches is necessary because the ends of the old bridge are within the "footprint"  of the new westbound approaches. These portions of the old bridge must be demolished and removed before the new westbound approaches can be constructed and the project completed."

That's cool. I can't wait 'til the Twin Spans are fully reopened to traffic.

Be well,

Appears to be good progress.

Traffic shifts to new bridge

All traffic has been removed from the old Twin Span Bridge.  East and westbound drivers are now crossing Lake Pontchartrain entirely on the new bridge.  Traffic on either end of the bridge are sharing the eastbound approaches until the old structure can be demolished and the westbound approaches constructed.  The approaches currently accommodate two lanes of traffic in each direction, while the mainline sections of the bridge have three lanes of traffic each.

Demolition of the old bridge and construction of the westbound approaches is on-schedule for completion before the mid-2012 contract deadline.
