I'd say they look like old-style street lamps with a thyroid condition!   :-D

Maybe the situation is different for you because you see truss arm lights all the time but over here we don't have them. Over here they are considered a very American feature much like yellow taxis in New York. Single arm lights are the standard over here so seeing them in other countries just looks the same and now it seems that even these are losing favor as the lantern is mounted directly to the top of the column like what's happening here as well.
