I've lived in 9 counties, listed in chronological order: Polk County, Arkansas; Lonoke County, Arkansas; Chatham County, Georgia; Faulkner County, Arkansas; Johnson County, Missouri; Jackson County, Missouri; Clay County, Missouri; Garfield County, Oklahoma and Tulsa County, Oklahoma. I'm a bit of a vagabond. How many counties have you lived in?
Since my father was in the military, I moved around quite a bit in my childhood. Not so much as an adult.
My list of ten (roughly chronological, but not counting returns to counties where I already lived): Onslow County NC (born there), Otter Tail County MN, Prince William County VA, San Diego County CA (through high school), Santa Clara County CA (college), New Haven County CT (college), Sacramento County CA (summer job), Washington DC (summer job), Falls Church city VA, Arlington County VA (that last one continuously since 1982).
Jumped around a lot for work and a change of scenery. Not in order:
Michigan
- Wayne
- Clinton
- Oakland
Illinois
- Cook
Connecticut
- Litchfield
Arizona
- Maricopa
Florida
- Hernando
- Monroe
- Orange
California
- Kings
- Fresno
San Francisco County, San Mateo County, Solano and Sacramento County 4 Counties in California.
Note I lived in Solano County in two stints.
I've lived in Henry, Clayton, Fulton, Bartow, Rockdale, and DeKalb (current) in Georgia, as well as Montgomery County, MD. So a total of seven, six of those in metro Atlanta.
Only lived in just one parish: Lincoln
GA: Gwinnett, Floyd
IL: DuPage, Cook
NY: Kings, Queens
VA: Arlington, Fairfax
International: Berkshire (England)
Also, two places not really in any particular county: DC and the City of Alexandria, VA
Hmm, let's see:
Knox County, TN
Guilford County, NC
Cavalier County, ND
Alamance County, NC
Pickens County, SC (GO TIGERS)
Clayton County, GA
Cobb County, GA
Wake County, NC
Montgomery County, MD
Mecklenburg County, NC
Iredell County, NC

Oneida, WI; Portage, WI; Marathon, WI; Grant, WI; Los Angeles, CA (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheLastOfTheseIsNotLikeTheOthers)
Five, all in Illinois.
One: Gloucester County, NJ.
None. I've lived in an independent city all my life.

Eight.

No, I've never even been to New Jersey. I meant that satirically towards Virginia as there are quite a few people who hate the state.
MN: Hennepin, Dakota, Ramsey, Sherburne
WI: Douglas, Dane
Does military service count? I never claimed residence in any of the states I served. Technically, I've never been a resident of a county. Connecticut ditched them 5 years before I was born.
But if you're not pedantic, I can say that I've lived in Hartford, Tolland, and New London Counties. I've served in Tom Green, TX, Monterey, CA, and Christian, KY; but I'm pretty sure my barracks were in Montgomery, TN. I did a TDY tour at Fort Devens, Mass. but that was less than 90 days and should probably not be counted.
Saginaw County, Michigan
Genesee County, Michigan
Ingham County, Michigan
Wayne County, Michigan
Macomb County, Michigan
Cook County, Illinois
LaPorte County, Indiana
Four, all in Kentucky:
Lee
Rowan (for college)
Estill
Clark

I have established "30-day residency" in Alameda, CA (conceived and currently); Sacramento, CA (born and raised); Santa Clara, CA (lived 24 years), Samsung-dong, Kangnam-gu (worked); and Travis, TX (worked planning to stay) Counties, and just missed the "continuous 30-day" mark working in Keelung, Taipei (but multiple 3- and 4-week stays give me a total time in Keelung greater than the time that I spent in Travis, which I regarded as "where I lived"). We can argue about whether a "Ku" or a "Dong" is the better approximation of a county or burough. Someone better versed in Korean Government than I am can help us out. In any case, it's 5 or 6.
I am not counting Fulton or Kalb, GA or any of the places that I spent only one week at a time for work or vacation.
Defining "lived" as "spent 30 or more consecutive days" - some of these were temporary residencies between moves.

My folks moved around a lot when I was little so I don't remember every single county, but I know most of them:
Wayne, MI
Northampton, VA (where I was born)
Cumberland, VA
ShittPittsylvania, VA
Wayne, NC (where I grew up)
Duplin, NC
If you count school, then 4 counties. If not, then only 2.
I've traveled around a bit, but only ever lived in Monroe County, NY. Wayne County is close enough that I visit probably close to weekly on average, and I even fuel up there quite regularly, but I've never resided there.
I've lived in five counties if I count my time away at college and law school and the three months I spent working in Alabama between my second and third years of law school. If I don't count the Alabama stint, then four counties (in three states).
Wayne County, MI
Houghton County, MI (college)
Manistee County, MI
Arapahoe County, CO
Five, all in NY: Monroe, St. Lawrence (college), Delaware (internship), Oneida, and Albany
4 counties:
Bergen, NJ
Essex, NJ (also born here)
Hanover, VA
Henrico, VA
The rest are independent cities in Virginia:
Hampton
Newport News
Richmond (where I've lived the most times and where I currently live)
Hartford County, CT
Philadelphia County, PA
3, all in IL: Cook, DeKalb, and Jo Daviess
Four counties: San Diego, CA; Montgomery, MD; Mercer, NJ;* Washtenaw, MI.*
Three county-equivalents: Baltimore, MD;* DC; Alexandria, VA.
*These count only if going away to university counts.
Two counties. Essex, MA - birth to 1990, Middlesex, MA 1990 to present
Just four:
Philadelphia County (and city) PA
Chester County PA
Indiana County PA
Monroe County NY
Essex - MA: birth to 1990 (excluding college semesters)
Bristol - RI: 1984-1988 (college semesters)
Delaware - PA: 1990 to present
Hmm let's see.
Washington - RI: birth to a bit post college
Rensselaer - NY: college semesters
Bristol, Norfolk, Middlesex, Suffolk, Plymouth - MA: post college to now. Lived in six different towns in MA which happen to be in five different counties.
Waukesha County, WI -- born and raised
Grant County, WI -- for college
Lafayette County, WI -- since graduating college
Not in chronological order.
Oregon:
Washington:
- Benton
- Clark
- Franklin (only for a couple months)
- Yakima
Idaho:
I don't see this list expanding anytime soon.
Kalamazoo County, MI
Ottawa County, MI
Cook County, IL
Suffolk County, NY (for one summer)
Orange County, FL
Onslow County, NC
Craven County, NC
So a total of 7.
Will County, IL
Brevard County, FL
City of Alexandria, VA
Montgomery County, PA
Chester County, PA
Sussex County, VA
Prince George County, VA
City of Petersburg, VA
City of Richmond, VA
Those VA cities are independent cities, not part of any county.
4 Counties & a Parish.

For those who don't want to click and read, the three counties I have lived in to date are:

Fairfield, CT (1990-2005, 2009-2011)
Queens, NY (2011-present)
Just two. Manitowoc County and Dane County, both in Wisconsin.
Eight for me:
Cheatham, Davidson (birthplace), Dickson, Putnam, and Rutherford in TN
Boyd and Fayette in KY
Lexington (current) in SC
All in Arkansas.
1) Scott
2) Logan
3) Franklin
4) Washington - moved back here after a 7 year stint at Wal-Mart ISD after graduating U of A and currently reside
5) Benton
2 in Ohio, Huron & Franklin

I like the analysis that you provided in that thread, Duke. But I think that people in general stick close to home unless they're part of the creative class or academe.
Just curious, what was it about coal country that you found appealing?
I'm not sure where I'd like to move, if I were to move out of my neck of the woods, but I enjoy trips to northern New England and this spring's jaunt to Gettysburg. My main question is: how would I support my wife and myself? I can't afford menial employment and I think I'm too much of an organization man despite my independent streak.
Heh. Glad my response in this thread matched by response in the old one.
I've lived in these counties long enough to have drivers' licenses and voter registration:
Maryland: Anne Arundel & Howard
Michigan: Ingham
New Hampshire: Hillsborough
Ohio: Franklin, Hamilton, & Warren
I've also spent full summers in Mackinac Co, MI and Dutchess Co, NY.
I worked full-time in Middlesex Co, MA and Prince George's Co, MD, for several years each, so it feels like I lived there, too.
Kenosha County, WI
Dane County, WI
Roughly in order (and leaving out repeats)...
Bonneville County, ID
New London County, CT
San Francisco County, CA
Charleston County, SC
City of Norfolk, VA
Berkeley County, SC
Pickens County, SC
City of Virginia Beach, VA
Prince William County, VA
City of Fredericksburg, VA
I may have also technically lived in San Diego County, CA very early on...
Marion, IN

DuPage, IL

It's that those towns manage to combine the following rather attractive traits:
- Old buildings/old architecture
- Relatively low cost of living
- Dense development, such that the town is walkable
- But the town is also small, so you can also get in the car and leave it to go elsewhere easily without contending with traffic and such
- And relatively close to home, such that visiting friends and family is not onerous
This is only viable as a retirement theory though, because such towns lack any decent nearby employment and are probably not a particularly good place to raise kids either.
I also don't see my soon to be bride going for it (this is a significant change that has happened since my post in the old thread which is also why my tune about relocating sooner has changed).
Three, all in Michigan:
Manistee County (born, raised, and currently live)
Ottawa County (college)
Washtenaw County
For a time, I worked in Mason County and I have spent plenty of nights in Kent County as my sister lives there
Lancaster Co., PA (born, first 16 years of life)
Anne Arundel Co., MD
Queen Anne Co., MD
Centre Co., PA (college)
Bucks Co., PA (current)
I work in Mercer Co., NJ
WI: Brown, Grant (college), Milwaukee, Washington, Waukesha, Waupaca
IL: Lee (internship)
GA: Cobb

There's no crime in not moving a lot. I'm very happy to live in the county where I grew up, and have no desire to live anywhere else.
One. Same town my whole life to.
5, all in Illinois. But two of those are because I lived away from home for high school and for college. Four are the counties that form the four corners of Chicagoland (no one really calls it that) :)
I have lived in two counties in my life.
I lived in (and was born in) Hamilton County, Tennessee for approximately the first 6 months of my life. Then my family moved to Dalton, Georgia (Whitfield County), and that is where I have lived ever since. My dad actually grew up in the Dalton area, but they (he and my mom) temporarily lived in Chattanooga when I was born due to work.
But we still go to Chattanooga very often, many times at least once a week. It is a pretty short drive on Interstate 75 going northwest and we are up there.
If you include summer residences, when my dad taught summer school in Iowa or owned a small resort in Wisconsin:
ARIZONA
Maricopa (1964, 1973-75, 1994-present)
ILLINOIS
Cook (1975-76, 1979-83, 1986-94)

I've only lived in one county (Monroe, NY), but I've traveled plenty. I think it can be harmful to neither move nor travel with at least some frequency. Most people I know who haven't traveled much or moved at all have a very insular worldview; it would do them good to spend some time in different states, countries, environments, etc.

I have done a LOT of traveling in the last five years and seen a lot of places, good and bad. But in all my travels, I still feel drawn to my 'home' region of the continent. I think there remains only a relatively small area across three Midwest states (and one Canadian Province) that I would want to live. There are a number of cultural and climate factors I could cite. But the stupidest one that I would not feel at home without is this:
I wouldn't want to settle some place where these are not plying the local fresh waters. Granted, they have a very large range these days:
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftargetwalleye.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2015%2F11%2FTW_WalleyeMap_13.jpg&hash=754970043a679a0070067ed80ffc664864f4a769)
But I'd probably pass on a fairly decent career opportunity outside of these areas.
