This tends to come up whenever there's a discussion on the forum for odd control cities. Chicagoland obviously is king of this, with Indiana, Wisconsin, and Iowa accompanying interstate shields on BGS's.

Here's a list of each state and whether there are examples of their state name as a destination and pictures of the best examples. Preference should be for interstates and large green signs before smaller guide signs and mileage signs. What I'm NOT looking for: state welcome signs, city names with the state (ex: Rocky Mount, NC or Jackson, Miss)

I'll update as we go!

Virginia has a conceptually similar sign for "NY — NJ" on northbound I-95 a couple of miles south of the Springfield Interchange: https://goo.gl/maps/TmTA9cLrEg2hNQXe7

I like this series of BGSs on IL 394 NB approaching 80/94/294, since it lists all 3 state-based controls in one shot!

And here is a US 24 BGS in Quincy, IL before the Mississippi River heading WB, with the "Missouri"  control

Here's one for Alaska, in Grande Prairie, Alberta:

https://goo.gl/maps/T9SDktFk6sYEzdD36 (same intersection, from southbound AB 40)

It's for an old segment of AB 43, which was relocated a few months ago to a new bypass (formerly AB 43X) northwest of Grande Prairie.

New York on a BGS in Montreal: https://goo.gl/maps/wUmodhkGZsCW4RPm9

Nearby, Street View shows a temporary sign listing Vermont pending installation of new BGSs (the old ones had also listed Vermont and I-89): https://goo.gl/maps/kxgHSu3WePYK9yHW7

Trying to include only ones that are different from what's already been posted.

Another Wisconsin, this one signed from Minnesota on I-35.  July 18, 2015.

Pennsylvania from I-78 in New Jersey.  January 22, 2004.

Another New Jersey, this one signed from I-78 in Pennsylvania.  July 4, 2006.

And the same idea from I-80.  March 21, 2007.

Not an individual state, but the entire New England region on I-87 north in Woodbury.  March 21, 2007.

Photos I post are my own unless otherwise noted.

I'll also add in this sign on I-81 approaching I-78, advising truckers to continue north to I-84 to access New England. Not necessarily listed as a control, but an honorable mention nonetheless.

The Chicago example is great! I thought I had remembered an all-in-one location from this forum, but I couldn't remember the location.

US 89

Due to a relative lack of large cities on I-70 west of Grand Junction, the westbound control city there is simply "Utah":

And that's the best choice, in my opinion. The issue there is that half of the westbound traffic on 70 will exit on US 6 to head up towards Salt Lake. Taking just interstates into account you could use Las Vegas or St George, but that carries a bit of confusion potential since those cities are located in the opposite direction from Salt Lake on I-15.

As this GSV from 2012 shows, the control city used to be Green River, the last town before the US 6 split...but Green River has just over 900 people. Probably the right call to just go with Utah here.

The intersection commonly known as "The Y" in South Lake Tahoe, CA.  Carson City is the most distant city listed on some mileage signs on eastbound US 50 coming over the Sierra; it's only about 30 miles from this point and would be the more conventional choice.

Side note about "Lake Tahoe" on that sign:  Some years ago there was an effort to name the unincorporated area where the big casinos are on the south shore of the lake as "Lake Tahoe".  It never took hold and that area is universally known as "Stateline".  The unmodified "Lake Tahoe" is reserved as the name of the body of water, and from this point it's equally accessible on either CA 89 or US 50.  So this "Lake Tahoe" is apparently a reference to the casino area.  The only other place "Lake Tahoe" is signed that way is on a small green sign on the traffic signal mast at the actual state line, right in front of Harrah's.  Back to this intersection...further ahead, right at the intersection, there is another guide sign pointing to "Stateline".

That's a better Utah example than the one from before. Thanks!

And we are up to 24 states! I did not expect to find that many.

There is also the one from the north, approaching that interchange as well, along I-94 East/Bishop Ford Freeway Outbound/Southbound:

Maybe when I-57 reaches Arkansas and Little Rock, perhaps IDOT will change the I-57 Primary control to "Arkansas"  in place of Memphis

Don't forget the signs on 295 in Delaware that have New Jersey and New York fully written out.

Here's an older one for Minnesota along some side roads abutting MN 43 crossing the Mississippi. GSV hasn't been back to update the new full size signs that exist there now with the full state names.

I doubt IDOT will change anything on I-57 unless Arkansas gives them extra money to due so.  And I would hope if Memphis does come down around Chicagoland it is replaced with Champaign.

May have a former one for Nebraska on the southbound connecting roadway/ramps for I-29 at US 77.

There is a similar sign for NB.

No way Memphis is replaced with Champaign, unless Springfield also replaces St Louis on I-55

I think IDOT will change it when I-57 is completed and signed to Little Rock. Probably more likely to sign it Little Rock than Arkansas, tho
