Saw this idea in an old thread and thought it was interesting:

In your state (or province/territory), where are the geographically extreme traffic lights? Other criteria is welcomed, but for now let's say northernmost, southernmost, easternmost, westernmost, most central, and for a challenge, highest (elevation) and lowest.

I see your challenge and raise you the highest and lowest signals in North Carolina, if one of ArcGIS's data sets on elevation is to be believed, and NCDOT's signal location data is accurate (as one example, a lot of the items listed as "flashers" in their GIS data don't seem to exist, even on old street view, and I'm not sure if something being listed as below sea level is accurate here. If those numbers are off, it could be my error, because I had to merge elevation data + signals myself)

I think I found the answer for Illinois' northernmost signal.
https://www.google.com/maps/@42.4937551,-87.8871693,3a,51.5y,98.86h,77.91t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sp9raGThiUqCKIWiSuAsaFg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?hl=en
IL 131/WI 31 Green Bay Rd and Russell Rd.  It's even signed that way.

Looks like it's installed and maintained by IDOT as well.

Funny that Google lists this as part of Seven Devils.  Most references list this location as near Banner Elk (in the 28604 zip code), but Foscoe is probably closer (also in the 28604 zip code).  Technically, the gap here is the northwestern boundary point of Grandfather Mountain, so perhaps the village of Grandfather (yep, again in the 28604 zip code) is more appropriate.  Locals tend to refer to this intersection as Tynecastle, but that is not a historical placename.  I know this is out of the way, but I tend to use NC-105 as the best route from the Triad to Tri-Cities since most of these roads tend to be straight up-and-down the mountain.  [Reference to the ClifVoider app might be appropriate here].

NEVADA

Northernmost: Winnemucca Blvd (I-80 BL) & Bridge St, Winnemucca*
Southernmost: Casino Dr & Needles Hwy, Laughlin**
Easternmost: Sandhill Blvd & I-15 North ramps, Mesquite
Westernmost: US 50 & entrance to Zephyr Cove Resort, Zephyr Cove (Lake Tahoe)

*While the other three are all within 3 miles or less to the nearest state line, the Winnemucca signal is about a 70-mile straight line distance to the northern state line.
**Less than a mile from the nearest state line, which is actually along the eastern boundary of Nevada on the Colorado River. This signal is about an 8.5-mile straight line distance to the southernmost point in Nevada.

I couldn't even fathom a guess as to what would be the state's most central traffic signal, as there's a whole lot of nothing in the middle of Nevada. The three largest populated towns closest to the geographic center or "mass" center of Nevada are Tonopah, Austin and Eureka, and none of the three have a signal. In fact, there's pretty much no signals anywhere inside the triangle formed by I-80, US 93 & US 95. The closest might be something in Fallon or Ely, which are both a long ways away from center.

Not sure that I could pinpoint extreme elevation traffic signals. But my guesses would be that the signal at highest elevation would be one of the ones on US 50 between Zephyr Cove & Stateline near Lake Tahoe, and the lowest being one of the traffic signals along Casino Dr in Laughlin.

I think Nevada's winner for both westernmost and highest elevation is on NV 28 in Incline Village, at its western junction with the Northwood Blvd./Southwood Blvd. loop road.
https://goo.gl/maps/3afm4euGY7xuXmtQ9
Longitude per Google Earth is 119° 57' 42" West, which puts it just west of the US 50/Zephyr Cove Resort signal (119° 56' 49" West).  Its elevation is 6423'; none of the ones on US 50 is above 6300'.

I'm not sure whether a pedestrian signal counts.  If it does, there's one further west for a crossing of NV 28 in front of the Crystal Bay Casino, just a few yards east of the CA/NV state line.

There are lights in Ely that look like they're higher than that. Using the elevation figures from Google Earth, highest one I can find is the intersection of US 6 and US 50/93 (Great Basin Blvd) south of downtown, which comes in at 6537 feet.

Hmmm, you are quite right.  I have driven through Ely a number of times and it somehow escaped me that the old downtown, at the mouth of a canyon as you approach from the west on US 50, sits at about 6420 feet; I would have guessed somewhere in the 5000s.

It's been a little bit since I'd been on SR 28 and didn't remember that signal there. I took a cursory glance on Google Maps satellite view, but didn't see that one.

I've also never been through Ely and wouldn't have guessed that there's elevations that high up around there.

Westernmost signal: Chain Bridge at Clara Barton Pkwy:

https://www.google.com/maps/@38.9304761,-77.1118438,3a,75y,168.03h,100.9t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sk6B6o1K8bh9hFAAKDhppYg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

Minor nitpick:  that's Chain Bridge at Canal Rd NW.  It doesn't become Clara Barton Pkwy until you cross over into Montgomery County.

Might as well do Vermont:

Northernmost:  I-91 northbound ramps at US 5/VT 105 in Derby.
Southernmost:  US 5/Fairground Rd in Brattleboro.
Easternmost:  US 5/VT 114/VT 122 in Lyndonville (no signals in Essex County).
Westernmost:  North Ave/Plattsburgh Ave in Burlington's North End (there are none in Grand Isle County).
Geographical Center:  the geographical center of Vermont is approximately 3 miles east of Roxbury village, near the Roxbury/Northfield line.  Closest signal to that location would be at VT 12/Vine St in Northfield, approximately 4 miles north of the geographical center.

WI . . .

North: I-535, US-53, and 2nd Street in Superior
East: WI-42/57 and Neenah Avenue in Sturgeon Bay
South: State Street and Shirland Avenue in Beloit (so close to the border that markings for the turn lanes go into Illinois)
West: US-10 and WI-35 in Prescott
Central (approx.): I-39/US-51 and WI-153 interchange western signal in Mosinee

Big John

There are traffic lights on the WI/IL state line at WI 31/IL 131/Green Bay Rd at Russell Rd in Kenosha WI and Lake IL counties.  That previously qualified as Illinois northernmost, so that would qualify as Wisconsin's southernmost.

I've been through Ely once, and the weird thing I noticed about it compared to other Nevada towns is it's right up against the Egan Range foothills. Most other Nevada towns in my experience tend to be more in the middle of valleys or along rivers.

Even looking at valley floor elevations, those do seem to be a bit higher in the eastern part of Nevada (generally 5000s range) than they are in western Nevada (3000s) or even western Utah (4000s).

Québec:

Northernmost: probably this one on QC-167 in Chibougamau.

Southernmost: excluding the lights at the customs stations, this one on A-55 just north of the border might qualfy.

Easternmost: Unless there's an intersection with traffic lights east of Natashquan or in Blanc-Sablon, the intersection between QC-199 and Chemin Petitpas (no Street View, surprisingly enough) would be the easternmost traffic light.

Westernmost: possibly this one on QC-111 in La Sarre.

Yes, but I think we're also looking for the southernmost WisDOT-maintained signal, hence the one in Beloit.

I lied.  I found a more southern on my roadtrip this weekend.

Southernmost: CO151 and CO172 in Ignacio

I just assumed the city was too small.

Figured I'd do Massachusetts since no one else has yet. Feel free to correct me if any of these are wrong.

Northernmost: I-95 ramps & Main St, Salisbury (just narrowly beats out nearby US 1 & MA 286 by a few thousandths of a degree)
https://goo.gl/maps/z3XnVQFcv6ZAGM448

Southernmost: MA 88 & Drift Rd, Westport (there's a signal at a drawbridge just south of here, but I'm not counting it because it's not at an intersection)

Easternmost: MA 28 & Shore Rd/Old Harbor Rd, Chatham

I believe the lowest elevation traffic light for California would be at Highway 111 and 4th Street in Mecca at 185 feet below sea level.
The highest would be Lake Mary Rd and Canyon Blvd in Mammoth Lakes at an elevation of 7,900 feet.
