Inspired by some of our signal talk over in the off-topic section, I sifted through more of my archives for some classic signal assemblies. Click for larger images.

The oldest is this one-piece four-way at Crawford and Monroe Streets.

Crawford Street westbound at Stewart Street.

Images from Tampa, Florida:

Lois Avenue northbound at Morrison Avenue.

Lois Avenue northbound at Swann Avenue.

22nd Street northbound at Hanna Avenue.

Orange Avenue north at North Lucerne Circle West with access to Florida 408 west.

Florida 527 northbound at the turn onto Orange Avenue.

Orange Avenue north at the merge with Florida 527 (same intersection as above).

Magnolia Avenue northbound after its split with Florida 527 with Lake Ivanhoe in the background.

These aren't mine, but here are some great examples of Michigan lights that were put up in the 70's and 80's.

Alex

Downtown Seattle has many older ground level assemblies. Some of the signals have points on the tops, others appeared to be four-way assemblies with false panels in place of signal lens. Click for larger images.

I posted some images of the old traffic light assembly in Bay Minette on the other thread, but wanted to share some more recent images (taken 03/20/09) of the same signals:

Those Tampa ones are awesome!!! Never saw FL use the 12-inch(?) red, the larger green seems to be more common.

P.S. The "LEFT" above the turn signal in Hellfighter's picture is amusing.
So many roads...so little time.

Those are some great pics.  Thanks so much for posting those, aaroads.  I've never seen any 12/8/8 signals in FL pics either.  I haven't seen too many FL installaqtions live since I've only been there twice and one of the times I was too young to remember much from the trip.  It's great to see some of their older and more interesting assemblies before they get replaced.

Okay, the greater Albany, NY area has a ton (no im really serious) of old signals which most include old 4way lights. Here are some of my pics...

In Tarrytown, NY, not necessarely old, but interesting and typical in towns in NY:

Also, an older common NY practice: installing bottom bars to connect signals and signs:

Still commonly seen in the Philadelphia metro area, an older practice where the red and green arrow are lit at the same time when the through signal is red. This is in Conshohocken:

The Seattle area has some of those light-up signs attached to their signals similar to the "Left" signs in Michigan. Here is an example from the off-ramp to WA-523:

Ian

One of my signals is from Seattle and had one of those signs attatched to the bottom. But the thing is, it wasn't a light up sign, it was a normal one.
Here are photos of them:

Here is also another old signal I want to share with you. Morton Township, PA:

Many intersections in Charleston outside downtown and the Battery feature these older signals. However many of them have been replaced with black painted mast arm assemblies and larger more standard signals.

Retro signals are used in the Battery itself. Most of the signals are ground level with the 12" 8" 8" style. There is at least one intersection with the 30" yellow span-wire supported lights.

That looks an awful lot like Latrobe, Pennsylvania.
I don't have opinions anymore. All I know is that no one is better than anyone else, and everyone is the best at everything

there's a very good reason for that...  :sombrero:

I think you got a wrong location on that picture.  That can't be Etna.  I live in the area and go past Etna on PA-8 several times and while there is a set of lights like that @ the intersection of PA-8 & Old Butler Plank Rd in Glenshaw (north of Etna + the lights are on non-railroad side of PA-8), that picture doesn't match anything that I know of along PA-8.

It might not be, but I thought it was the same set.

It is, right where Depot and Main Streets intersect.

Years ago, the bottom part of the signal had a continually illuminated right green arrow to direct northbound 981 traffic to turn right, and on the opposite side was a straight and left green arrow.

Well, the light structure is from the '70's and it's the same one, they just painted the light covers black, and added modern pedestrian signals. This is from Ann Arbor, and is very common within Ann Arbor and Oakland County.
