Nothing wrong with the shield. It's just the "EAST" banner that needs replacing. But I'm afraid you're right that they would...
Mileage-based exit numbering implies the existence of mileage-cringe exit numbering.

Since this has to do with Damaged signs, I'm gonna bring something I posted a few weeks ago on the Street Name sign topic over here - this was in Burnettown, S.C.:

I really hate to say this, but I believe that the back to back Street Name signs should be a standard for higher speed highways.

On another note: I have seen many signs in Barnwell that are so badly faded, the signs are no longer legible. The most prominent examples are along MARLBORO AV (SC 3) and ELLENTON ST (US 278) at its intersection with WELLINGTON DR. The latter location has the background paint peeling off the Street Name sign.

This pic was taken last in 2011, Rt. 1, in Damariscotta, Maine. Was replaced pretty quick by MDOT (within a month or so) But what are they using, Elmer's glue to hold this up?

Finally upgraded to Expressway after, what, seven or so years on this forum? Took a dadgum while, but, I made it!

I like how the legend is, for the most part, still legible.

That's what you get for taking down perfectly good button-copy & replacing it with Clearview!   :spin:

It's even more interesting that the sign is now a BWS w/black lettering.

Judging by the fact that the text is still legible, did it really die?  :-/

If I owned a dam and decided to donate it to charity, would I be giving a dam? I'm sure that might be a first because no one really gives a dam.

No, it's just a shell of its former self.

Like it said in the Charleston news report, "Holy Crap!"

Anyway, how long do you think this section of I-77 will be closed?

Found out from another thread that this section is already open to traffic.  Great job WVDOT!

No, it's a BAS. (Big Aluminum Sign.) Any bits of reflective backing left are charred onto the metal. The reason the shield and letters made it through is because they were tacked onto the background - that's one extra layer to burn through.

Since it's still legible, they should totally leave the sign standing!

I recently saw a direction sign with black text on a white background that wasn't the result of a fire or other damage, though I was too far away to get a picture. It replaced a standard white text on green background sign and I have no idea what knucklehead approved it.

If anyone's in the DC area soon and wants to try to get a picture, it's on the exit ramp from the Outer Loop to Gallows Road (Old Exit 7, I think now Exit 51).

To me the road surface in the West Virginia picture above looks kind of like the floor in a barbershop when they're not being prompt about sweeping up all the clippings!

Between Sherman and Dallas, there is an FM 121 that crosses US 75 a short distance before SH 121. A TxDot engineer told me that there is a custom sign to tell drivers not to confuse the two.

I drive past these signs almost daily. The street name has been changed to Van Alstyne Parkway, but the FM 121 text remains.

(The 1-mile BGS, by the way, has been through the mill since this picture was made. Been hit and knocked over at least twice, but the original sign remains, albeit dented up pretty good.)

Make that three times. That sucker was knocked over about four months ago and I swear it's still on the ground. It's a minor miracle that sign isn't filling an entire wall of some frat house by now.

Noted missing signs at five or so interchanges on New Year's Eve from Columbia, SC west to Montgomery, AL. Weather related or what?

A couple more that were still somewhat standing:

For the other Wichita residents on here:

I noticed a broken & fallen exit sign on my way to work–good photo op for someone interested in mounting hardware.  I-135 northbound at the K-254 exit.

Since this thread has since been 'bumped up'.  That damaged BGS (now BAS) apparently went through this:
