It was 58° but dark and rainy when my alarm clock went off at 7:00 this morning. It's still dark and rainy, but it's already dropped to 52° as of 9:22. It's supposed to be down to 44° by noon, 37° by sunset, and 25° by sunrise tomorrow.

"That sounded stupid, didn't it?"

Schools are canceled in my area due to a Freeze Warning and Wind Chill Advisories.  Highs in South Texas range from low 40s along the coast to upper 40s farther inland.

On an interesting note if you take all the daily national highs for last month (January 2022), 14 days occurred in various locations across Florida, one day in Arizona, 5 days in California, and 11 days in Texas.  The highest of which was 99 degrees in Falcon Lake, Texas on New Years Day, breaking the all-time January record for Texas (and the USA for that matter) by one degree, the old January record was 98 degrees in the same location set back in 1997.

Ha.  Wind chill of what?  20?  That's a nice day a lot of times here.

^  Yeah something like that; wind chills this morning as low as 26 degrees here in Corpus Christi.

But that would be like your Denver area issuing an Excessive Heat Warning for a heat index higher than 100 degrees, whereas in my area, that's a normal late-spring or early-fall weather for us (You don't want to know what our summer days are like).  You can only handle what you're used to.

It gets up to 100 here though too.  It's just amusing to me I suppose.  I had school cancelled due to cold for me when I grew up in Minnesota because of -35 with a -65 wind chill.  To my knowledge, that's my only time I had school cancelled because of cold.

In my early days of school, -25 wind chill was the threshold for school cancellation. That may have changed now, I'm not sure. In any case, it only happened a few times that I can remember.

And I know this is more of an east/west dynamic than a north/south one but... you feel the cold a lot quicker when it's a damp cold. That actually makes the dry cold out west almost more dangerous because you don't notice it as fast. Here in the east, when it gets really cold it chills you to the bone almost immediately when you step outside.

In my backyard, I measured seven inches of snow. NWS Springfield measured nine and a half at their offices. The low tonight is expected to be 4, the coldest thus far this year.

Sunny, dry, a bit windy. High about 70°F like it usually is this time of year in the desert. Like Jimmy Buffett sang, "The Weather Is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful."

Back to normal winter this week:  Lows in the upper 40s and lower 50s, and highs in the 70s (a couple locations approaching 80 degrees).

Also Texans and Floridians wouldn't call this "Excessive Heat" but, looks like California has their own definition of it.

California wouldn't call that excessive heat in summer, either. The western 1/3 of the US uses criteria for those heat advisories and warnings that doesn't involve set temperatures but instead takes into account several factors, including departure from normal and time of year. So while 90 degree highs may not be unusual in summer, they are 25 degrees above average for this time of year, and nobody is prepared for this sort of heat in early February.

Another factor here is that a not-insignificant percentage of that region's population this time of year is snowbirds from up north, who may not be used to typical California summer heat.

jgb191

^ Yeah I get what you're saying, but even in the winter season (though fairly infrequent) 80s and 90s is not unheard of in California and Texas.  In fact Texas saw several such days just last month plus the last eight consecutive days of 2021 (Dec. 24-Dec 31).

You're right that it is unseasonably warmer than normal, but even so the forecast for the surrounding LA area is mostly in 80s (upper 80s tops), which is not even close to excessively hot; in fact not even hot enough to worry about any heat stroke or heat-related casualty.
