I realized the other day that I live very close to a very large variety of speed limits, and I got to wondering how far I was from each. I did my best guessing on some of them, since I realized Aurora doesn't have the common speed limits of 30 and 35 mph. I was curious if others had general ideas of how far they are (especially those from out East where the higher speed limits are a long way away).

25 mph - 40 feet (my house is on a 25mph street)
30 mph - 2.75 miles (Jewell Avenue just west of I-225)
35 mph - 6.85 miles (CO83 (Leetsdale Avenue) just west of Oneida Street)
40 mph - 275 feet (Buckley Avenue)
45 mph - 1.04 miles (Tower Avenue)
50 mph - 13.4 miles (US85 (Santa Fe Avenue) north of CO470)
55 mph - 2.35 miles (CO83 (Parker Avenue) just south of Quincy Avenue)
60 mph - 8.2 miles (I-25 just north of CO2 (Colorado Avenue))
65 mph - 2.1 miles (I-225 just north of CO83 (Parker Avenue))
70 mph - 203.65 miles (I-70 just west of Horizon Avenue in Grand Junction)
75 mph - 3.8 miles (E-470 just north of Quincy Avenue)
80 mph - 104 miles (I-80 east of Cheyenne)
85 mph - 739 miles (TX130 east of Austin)

So my farthest away, Colorado-legal speed limits are 70 and 50.

Max Rockatansky

I have everything up to 70 MPH less six miles from my house.  There is a 15 MPH speed limit Sign about 100 feet from my front door.  To get to the nearest to 75 and 80 MPH zones would take me on I-15 north of Las Vegas towards Cedar City, Utah.

I just realized I'm darn close to as far away as possible in the continental U.S. from a 70 mph speed limit if none of the 75 mph states have 70 mph stretches. Even states that only go up to 65 mph have 70mph within a couple hundred miles.

kphoger reminded me of a small stretch of 70 mph in Grand Junction.

7/8

<=20 km/h - Not sure
30 km/h: 3.1 km (residential street, recently lowered from default 50)
40 km/h: < 20 m (my street, recently lowered from default 50)
50 km/h: <= 2.5 km (arterial). There may be a closer example, but I'm not sure since the City's recently lowering a lot of 50 limits and GSV hasn't kept up yet.
60 km/h: 270 m (arterial)
70 km/h: 3.4 km (rural arterial within city limits)
80 km/h: 7.3 km (two-lane Highway 7 exiting the city)
90 km/h: 3.0 km (Highway 8 freeway)
100 km/h: 3.5 km (also Highway 8 freeway)
110 km/h: 78.3 km (QEW in Stoney Creek)
120 km/h / 75 mph: 212 km (I-69 just west of the I-94 split in Port Huron, MI)
130 km/h / 80 mph: 1475 km via Muskegon-Milwaukee ferry, 1631 km via Chicago (I-90 in SD at MN border)
140 km/h / 85 mph: 2490 km (TX 130 south of TX 45 near Austin)

For freeway speeds, everything around South Hampton Roads is 55 mph or 60 mph. The only higher speed limit in South Hampton Roads is on the reversible HO/T lanes in Norfolk on I-64 which are posted at 65 mph.

On the Peninsula, the speed limit rises on I-64 north of I-664 to 65 mph and finally goes to 70 mph around 20 more miles north near Williamsburg.

That's around 60 miles to the first 70 mph segment in Virginia, although it's not the closest 70 mph zone. That would go to the US-17 Elizabeth City Bypass which is only around 30 miles south - although it only goes for 10 miles with 55 mph and 60 mph on either side.

doorknob60

All these are driving distance according to Google Maps, not as the crow flies.

20 MPH: 30 ft (the street I live on)
25 MPH: 0.3 miles (neighborhood collector)
30 MPH: 0.3 miles (neighborhood collector)
35 MPH: 0.9 miles (Vista Ave)
40 MPH: 1.2 miles (Wright St)
45 MPH: 2.2 miles (Broadway Ave)
50 MPH: 4.1 miles (Pleasant Valley Rd)
55 MPH: 5.4 miles (ID-21)
60 MPH: 4.2 miles (I-184)
65 MPH: 1.4 miles (I-84)
70 MPH: 55 miles (I-84 at the Oregon/Idaho border)
75 MPH: 237 miles (I-80 near Elko, NV)
80 MPH: 3.1 miles (I-84)
85 MPH: 1652 miles (TX-130)

So I have all of them (20-85) very close to my house (under 6 miles), except for 70, 75, and 85. Idaho uses 70 in some places, but not in the Boise area, so the closest is in Oregon. Idaho got rid of all the 75 zones in the southern part of the state in favor of 80, though I think I-90 has a 75 zone still. So the closest to me is in Nevada. And of course, 85 is only TX-130.

ChimpOnTheWheel

25 mph (the street I live on)
35 mph (neighborhood collector)
55 mph (I-294, south of O'Hare Airport, Illinois)
60 mph (I-88, west of Hillside, Illinois)
65 mph (I-55, south of Bolingbrook, Illinois)
70 mph (not sure; probably I-355, south of Bolingbrook, Illinois; or I-90, west of Schaumburg, Illinois)
75 mph (*most likely* US-131, north of Grand Rapids, Michigan)
80 mph (not sure; probably I-90 west of the Minnesota-South Dakota line)
85 mph (TX-130, east of Austin, Texas)
Just a casual.

Great Lakes Roads

25 mph- on Lincolnway (SR 2) through downtown La Porte
30 mph- near my house
35 mph- Monroe Street (SR 4)
40 mph- Boyd Boulevard between SR 4 and US 35
45 mph- SR 4 leaving La Porte
50 mph- SR 2 east of La Porte
55 mph- SR 4 east of La Porte
60 mph- SR 2 between US 20 and South Bend
65 mph- St. Joesph Valley Parkway (US 20/31)
70 mph- Indiana Toll Road (I-80/90)
75 mph- US 31 in Michigan north of Oceana County Line
80 mph- I-90 entering SD from MN
85 mph- obviously Texas on SH 130

I'm not going to name roads here, and I'll start at 25 mph since anything lower than that is pretty rare around here. Distances are by road, not as the crow flies.

25 mph - my street and most residential streets in the area
30 mph - 1.7 miles
35 mph - 0.5 miles
40 mph - 0.5 miles
45 mph - 1.4 miles
50 mph - 3.9 miles
55 mph - 1.2 miles
60 mph - 248 miles (I-90 outside Cleveland, OH)*
65 mph - 5.7 miles (I-490 (south)east of Exit 25)
70 mph - 114 miles (US 15 at NY/PA line)**
75 mph - 287 miles (I-69 west of Port Huron, MI)
80 mph - 1164 miles (I-90 at MN/SD line)

* If 100 km/h counts as a 60 mph equivalent, there are obviously many 100 km/h routes in Canada that are closer than Cleveland, starting with the QEW west of the Peace Bridge, 86 miles away.

** If 110 km/h counts as a 70 mph equivalent, it's incredibly close, a true toss-up between the QEW west of St. Catharines at 112 miles and US 15 in PA at 114 miles. Just for fun, the 70 mph section of US 15 in PA is closer as the crow flies at only 82 miles away, while the 110 km/h section of the QEW is 93 miles away.

Oh, and I found it interesting that my answers for 60, 70, and 75 mph - three of the four most common freeway speeds outside of the Northeast - are either found in Canada (pending whether 100 and 110 count) or are reached by driving through Canada (I-69 in Michigan). In other words, 65 mph is the only "normal" freeway speed limit found in NY.

70 mph - 479 miles (I-29 in southwestern Iowa)

I'd like to be corrected on my 70 mph guess, since I don't think any of the other 75 mph states around me have any 70 sections, but others obviously might know better.

We've had this conversation before.  You live like, what, 250 miles from Grand Junction?

I'm sure that's still a contender for farthest away in the continental US, but it's nowhere near 479 miles.

Wouldn't this spot on I-69 near Port Huron be closer? (that's my closest 75 mph).

Huh. I was just out there, but I apparently didn't pay any attention that it dropped to 70. I suck. I guess I didn't go past the Horizon exit, and it's 75 all the up to there.

You're also less than 479 miles from US-270/US-412/OK-3, part of which is 70 mph

I thought there might be something in the panhandle of either Texas or Oklahoma. I know those states post high limits on non-interstates, but didn't find any in a quick look around.

I guess you're right. I didn't remember that being 75 mph, but based on historical Street View, it seems to have been increased between 2015 and 2019. I've been on that section of I-69 twice, most recently in 2017. My guess is it was probably still 70 mph then.

Either way, I've updated my post as that section is significantly closer at 287 miles away.

7.8 miles (US 9)

... you've given away your location via trilateration.
