English... insert a very well known compound noun ... do you speak it?

there is the rebellion factor involved in giving your band a severely senseless name.  But... The Band, The The, and !!! have made waste of the subversive aspects of such an act.

Nowadays, calling your band something something asinine is not an act of rebellion - it is simply stupid.

gotcha.  There were a few shields posted for routes that were never built, but I believe that only extends for numbers that existed elsewhere with only particular segments unbuilt.

I am thinking of a Massachusetts I-95 shield on the Tobin Bridge, despite the fact that I-95 was never built through there... the number was hastily slapped onto a ring road around Boston (the Tobin bridge is just north of downtown Boston), and the position of the 95 shield was technically correct, as you would get to I-95 ... eventually ...

Doug Kerr photo that's on Steve Alpert's site.  That blob on the left sign is, indeed, an I-95 shield.  I saw it all the time growing up*; probably was around as late as 2000 or so.  If I recall correctly, it was an 18x18 shield with the extra-large MASSACHUSETTS state name, i.e. 1956 spec, that Mass used into the mid-60s.

I distinctly recall the I-95 as being one of the few shields with the Mass state name; in the late 80s NH and RI were plentiful but Mass was already hard to find.  There was an I-86 survivor at exit 2 of I-84 in Sturbridge with state name, and occasional other ones, like some 495s at the Lowell Connector, but I distinctly remember looking forward to family trips out of state because it seemed every other state had their name on the shields!

I took that photo in late June 2003, during one of my insane 24 hours of New England trips.

Here's a picture of the ON 420 marker, it's isn't mounted really high though...

(picture from flickr by dougtone)

Even if I were some stoner that was all about reading "High Times" & stereotypical cliched shit such as the "420" thing, if I were right there to steal a sign, I'd have to go for the QEW sign.
It's classy (for a route sign).
I don't have opinions anymore. All I know is that no one is better than anyone else, and everyone is the best at everything

^^

I agree, that's the best route marker I think that I've seen.

I don't recall taking the Tobin Bridge any time after 2000 or so.  In fact, until recently, I thought it had been torn down as part of the Big Dig!  :pan:

Not sure of any Route 420's in Colorado offhand, but on I-70 in Western Colorado between Mile Markers 68 & 70, they purposely labeled the in-between marker as "Mile 68.99" to avoid sign thefts.

The same reason Oregon's Belt Line Highway got designated OR 569 a couple years ago; the originally planned number (its secret highway number) was about 500 less.

I've never confirmed it, but have always suspected the renaming of Route 69 in California to Route 245 (ca. 1968 or so) as another example of this.

We only have an unsigned Orange CR 420, and a former SR 420 (probably Secondary) that is now Hernando CR 578.
So many roads...so little time.

NJ 69 was renumbered as NJ 31 for the same reason.

According to a guy I talked to once who worked with MoDOT, US 69 is the most-stolen sign in Missouri.

long, long, long gone.  Was gone by the early 90s.

I was at that intersection a few months ago and the only thing left from the original 1960s or 70s signing is a single extremely worn arrow.  The shields and other auxiliary signs look to be no more than 15 years old.

Elizabeth Regina. Regina is the Latin for "Queen".

was it named for Elizabeth I (the 16th century monarch) or the Queen Mother (wife of King George VI, and Elizabeth II's mother)?

that sign is from 1940 or so, so it definitely was not named for Elizabeth II.

It was named for the Queen Mother if I recall correctly.

Kentucky has a state highway 420. It runs through Frankfort and most of it is an old route of US 127.

KY 69 exists in the western part of the state.

I have never heard of excessive thefts of either route sign.
Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

Dougtone

There is a ME 69 not too far west of Bangor, but the ME 69 signs I've seen are always on uni-signs.  Here's an example...

NY 69 shields are just as likely to be hung upside down as they would be stolen.

CT 69 and PA 69 shields could have a higher theft rate, especially CT 69 since it is in or near Waterbury and New Haven.  PA 69 is in rural portions of Warren County.  Then there's PA 420 in Chester County.

Bickendan

What was the rate of thefts on highways numbered 666 then? I'm thinking US 666 had to be pinched a number of times before it finally got decommed.

That was cited as one of the official reasons for changing the route number, IIRC.

njroadhorse

CR 666 in Atlantic County gets swiped pretty frequently IIRC.

I noticed that last year when I was out there but didn't put two and two together.  Driving east on I-70 in MD yesterday afternoon I noticed that the "Mile 69" marker had been stolen and a sad looking replacement had taken its place.

MD hasn't had a MD 69, 420, or 666 since the 50's or 60's.

Ohio 420 is a the extension of I 280 past the Ohio Turnpike to US 20/23. It even has reassurance shields.

Since this thread has deviated into other "questionable" numbers; along with 420, Ohio has an 666 (from Zanesville heading SE), but did away with 69 (modern day 235 from US 40 on north) in the late 60s.
Please, don't sue Alex & Andy over what I wrote above
