Interesting that my home state is the winner for west of the Mississippi.  I would have thought Missouri or Texas would have been highest for sure.
US 6 helps Colorado get a lot of the states in the Northeast, along with US 40 and US 50. Missouri have the latter two, but doesn't have US 6. Texas only have US 62 to the northeast, which doesn't go far enough to hit any of the smaller states. The short section of US 84 in Colorado also helps it get most of the states in the Southeast.

I-68: WV
I-70: UT, CO, KS, MO, IL, IN, OH, WV, PA
I-81: TN, VA, WV, PA, NY
I-83: PA
I-95: FL, GA, SC, NC, VA, DC, DE, PA, NJ, NY, CT, RI, MA, NH, ME
I-295: DC
I-495: VA, DC

US 1: FL, GA, SC, NC, VA, DC, PA, NJ, NY, CT, RI, MA, NH, ME
US 11: LA, MS, AL, GA, TN, VA, WV, PA, NY
US 13: NC, VA, DE, PA
US 15: SC, NC, VA, PA, NY
US 29: FL, AL, GA, SC, NC, VA, DC
US 40: UT, CO, KS, MO, IL, IN, OH, WV, PA
US 50: CA, NV, UT, CO, KS, MO, IL, IN, OH, WV, VA, DC
US 113: DE
US 219: VA, WV, PA, NY
US 220: NC, VA, WV, PA
US 222: PA
US 340: VA, WV
US 522: VA, WV, PA

Umm ... I already did Maryland yesterday.  The count is actually 28+DC.  Looks like you counted Georgia twice.

I haven't seen Maryland done; nor is it on the leaderboard at this moment.

First occurrence in the list is bolded.

I-68:  WV
I-70:  PA, WV, OH, IN, IL, MO, KS, CO, UT
I-81:  NY, PA, WV, VA, TN
I-83:  PA
I-95:  ME, NH, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, PA, DE, DC, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL
I-295: DC
I-495: DC, VA

US 1:  ME, NH, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, PA, DC, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL
US 11:  NY, PA, WV, VA, TN, GA, AL, MS, LA
US 13:  PA, DE, VA, NC
US 15:  NY, PA, VA, NC, SC
US 29:  DC, VA, NC, SC, GA, AL, FL
US 40:  NJ, DE, PA, WV, OH, IN, IL, MO, KS, CO, UT
US 50:  DC, VA, WV, OH, IN, IL, MO, KS, CO, UT, NV, CA
US 113:  DE
US 219:  NY, PA, WV, VA
US 220:  PA, VA, WV, NC
US 222:  PA
US 301:  DE, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL
US 340:  WV, VA
US 522:  PA, WV, VA

Unless I've miscounted (which is a definite possibility) I get 28 states plus DC.

Methinks Maryland needs to ranked a bit higher - pretty good for such a small state if I do say so myself.

Then let's get it finished off.

Kentucky:
I-24: IL, TN, GA
I-64: MO, IL, IN, WV, VA
I-65: AL, TN, IN
I-69: TN, IN, MI
I-71: OH
I-75: FL, GA, TN, OH, MI
I-265: IN
I-275: IN, OH
I-471: OH
US23: FL, GA, NC, VA, OH, MI
US25: GA, SC, NC, TN
US27: FL, GA, TN, OH, IN
US31: AL, TN, IN, MI
US41: FL, GA, TN, IN, IL, WI, MI
US42: OH
US45: AL, MS, TN, IL, WI, MI
US51: LA, MS, TN, IL, WI
US52: ND, MN, IA, IL, IN, OH, WV, VA, NC, SC
US60: AZ, NM, TX, OK, MO, IL, WV, VA
US62: TX, NM, OK, AR, MO, IL, OH, PA, NY
US68: OH
US79: TX, LA, AR, TN
US119: WV
US127: TN, OH, MI
US150: IL, IN
US231: FL, AL, TN, IN
US421: NC, TN, VA, IN
US431: AL, TN
US460: WV, VA
US641: TN

27 States.  Closest not connected: MD (177 miles)

Chris

I wondered how you got 27, when between SkyPesos and me we got 26.

Kentucky's interstates touch surprisingly few other states.

In numerical order, adding only states not previously listed.

I-24: Illinois, Tennessee, Georgia.
I-64: Missouri, Indiana, West Virginia, Virginia
I-65: Alabama
I-69: Not counted since it's a discontinuous route at the moment.
I-71: Ohio
I-75: Michigan, Florida

That's only 11 states.
I'll add in the US routes for KY too. Lmk if I'm missing any state.
US 25: NC, SC (13)
US 51: LA, MS, WI (16)
US 52: ND, MN, IA (19)
US 60: AZ, NM, TX, OK (23)
US 62: AR, PA, NY (26)

Surprisingly, no same numbered route between Kentucky and Kansas, considering they're only one state (Missouri) apart.

Then I saw US 52. I didn't count it because it doesn't officially enter Kentucky, at least not according to KYTC. The road is owned and maintained by WVDOT.

But you can drive from a point in Kentucky, get to US52 in Kentucky by not entering another state (as in arriving from KY292) and drive to the other states.  I feel my point stands.

Darn it. You beat me to it.
I was trying to sit here and do them via memory and without looking online. But I forget about some of our us highways.

Granted it's a big state- but I didn't know yall had that many, nor did I expect the Interstate to Highway ratio to be that far from equal.

I'm going to try something with Vermont; how many states can Vermont connect to if you're allowed to change to another I/US route once outside the state. All other states would most likely be at least 47/48 with this, but not Vermont.

The states VT connects directly with a single route: CT, MA, ME, NH, NY (5)
I-91 -> I-95: FL, GA, SC, NC, VA, DC, MD, DE, PA, NJ, RI (16)
I-91 -> I-90: WA, ID, MT, WY, SD, MN, WI, IL, IN, OH (26)
I-91 -> US 6: CA, NV, UT, CO, NE, IA (32)
I-91 -> US 20: OR (33)
US 2 -> US 11: LA, MS, AL, TN, WV (38)

Since we're going international, here's "How many provinces are directly connected to yours via a TCH highway?":
1 - New Brunswick, Nova Scotia (9)
3 - British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Québec, Newfoundland and Labrador (8)
10 - Prince Edward Island (2)
11 - Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut (0)

The reason for the differences is that each branch is counted separately, so the branch between NB/PEI/NS counts as a separate route as the mainline (as do the others, but they're irrelevant because the mainline goes to every province except PEI).  If we were to add the Alaska Highway, the Yukon would be below PEI with 1, and British Columbia would join New Brunswick and Nova Scotia for 9.

Going off the top of my head, I think if you're allowed to change routes once after leaving the state, Kentucky gets 46 of the lower 48, excepting only OR and VT. It helps that the north-south routes through Kentucky (I-75 and I-65) intersect the transcontinental routes like 10, 40, 80, and 90, and another long route in 94. Also, I-64 intersects I-81 and I-95, which gets much of the northeast and mid-Atlantic.

Oregon is possible as you can change to US 20 or US 30 from some of Kentucky's routes in another state. So that leaves Vermont as the only one out.

If you’re allowed to change routes once, Utah connects to all 47 other contiguous states...though the two-number route is often not the most direct one.

Yes, but I was counting only interstate-to-interstate connections. And I-75 does connect to US 2, so wouldn't that get Vermont?  :bigass:

If Toledo were in Michigan then I think the Ohio Turnpike and Indiana Toll Road simply get built farther south instead of involving an additional state in the toll road system going between New York City and Chicago.

Just imagine what Michigan would have if they hadn't lost the Toledo Strip in the war with Ohio.

If Toledo were in Michigan then I think the Ohio Turnpike and Indiana Toll Road simply get built farther south instead of involving an additional state in the toll road system going between New York City and Chicago.
My guess is that the Ohio Turnpike will intersect I-75 at Bowling Green instead of at its current location of Perrysburg, and will closely parallel US 6 from the IN border to about Fremont, where it will resume its current routing. I think US 20 will still have a short segment through "Toledo, Michigan", which by itself, would add in a lot of states for Michigan for this thread.

Here's the leaderboard for Spain :sombrero:. E-Routes are not included:
1. Castile and Leon (13, only misses Murcia)
2. Catalonia, Madrid (10)
4. Andalusia, Aragon (9)
6. Castile La Mancha, Basque County, Valencia (8)
9. Asturias, Galicia, Navarre, Rioja (6)
13. Extremadura (5)
14. Cantabria, Murcia (4)
16. Balearic Islands, Canary Islands (0)

Edit: Extremadura and the Valencian Community used to be connected via N-430, which is no longer signed East of Albacete. Somehow I had included it when I shouldn't...

Please note that I may mention "invalid" FM channels, i.e. ending in an even number or down to 87.5. These are valid in Europe.

I'll try this with Chinese Provinces. Without HK, Macau and Taiwan, there's 31 total subdivisions.

Shanghai:
G2: Jiangsu, Shandong, Hebei, Tianjin, Beijing (5)
G15*: Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, Liaoning (9)
G40: Shaanxi, Henan, Anhui (12)
G42: Sichuan, Chongqing, Hubei (15)
G50: N/A
G60: Yunnan, Guizhou, Hunan, Jiangxi (19)
G312: Xinjiang, Gansu, Ningxia (22)
G318: Tibet (23/30)

Missing: Heilongjiang, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Qinghai, Guangxi, Hainan
*G15 is disconnected between Shandong and Liaoning, with an undersea tunnel planned to connect them. Also, it's planned to go into Hainan, but no section of G15 currently exists in Hainan. I counted the Liaoning portion, but not Hainan.

Fujian (freeways only):
G3: Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangsu, Shandong, Hebei, Tianjin, Beijing (7)
G15: Guangdong, Shanghai, Liaoning (10)
G25: Jilin (11)
G70: Ningxia, Gansu, Shaanxi, Hubei, Jiangxi (16)
G72: Guangxi, Hunan (18)
G76: Sichuan, Guizhou (20/30)

I can't find a list of the national highways that go through Fujian; all I know about those is that G319 enters Chongqing and G324 enters Yunnan for new additions to the list.

Looking through my old threads, and I decided I’m bumping this one to clarify that Missouri is directly connected to only 31 states (plus DC), and not 32 as I had put originally. Looking back at this post, I realized that when I did my count, I had counted Tennessee twice, which I didn’t notice at the time I posted it.

Anyway, I already updated my original post accordingly. And as for whoever posted the leaderboard - you’ll need to update the number for Missouri, from 33 to 32 (including DC).
