Yeah, it was probably not the best idea to take the tunnel instead of the bridge...

I took the 401 on the trip home from Chicagoland, instead of the 402, hoping to clinch the 401 as I had already done the 402 on the trip going. I've previously done the 401 from the Québec border to the 402 junction in London (obviously), so I was supposed to do the last 150 km or so of 401 past London.

When we were getting onto the 401 from the tunnel, I looked behind me and saw more freeway, and then I look to the front again and see the exit number 14. So I think, there must have been 14 more km of 401 that we didn't drive on. Nooooooo

You actually only missed about 2 1/2 kilometers. The 401 currently begins at km 10.2. You got on at Exit 13 (Dougall Parkway), which is at km 12.6.

An extension of 401- the Windsor-Essex Parkway- is under construction that will extend the highway westward from the current terminus at Highway 3 to the US-Canadian border. Estimated completion is currently 2015. So you'll just have to go back down to Windsor and clinch it then.

There are long range plans to extend 401 to a new bridge to Michigan, but that is a long way off.

It was at grade until 2012. The interchange has been reconstructed because of the in-progress westward extension of the 401. Google hasn't caught up yet.

You clinched a branch of the (former) 401.  The short section of freeway between Howard Avenue and the mainline 401 was designated as the 401 (Tunnel Route), but was included in the mileage tables for the 401.  This short section of freeway was transferred to the City of Windsor during the late 1990s.

1.0 km of the 401 (TR) is still a provincial highway. You missed 2.150 km of the mainline 401, but as stated, there's a 13.000 km portion that will open later this decade, so it's not like you won't need to go back soon anyway.

Which is as close to a nonstop Detroit-Toronto route you can get. Even at full length, M-10 and I-375 still stop well short of reaching the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.

I just drove from Toronto to Detroit via the 401 to clinch what was left, but having already been in Windsor and taking the tunnel, opted to take the quickest way to the Ambassador Bridge.
