this link shows updates made in the last day:

www.aaroads.com/shields/main.php?new=1

That link *should* stay functional, even as we work diligently on getting the shield gallery into its final form.  If we change the PHP, we'll definitely give the new link!

Today, within about 22-24 hours of this writing, if you click that link, you may see 55 new photos of old highway markers courtesy of Michael Summa.  This covers the states of Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, and Minnesota.

We'll be adding many more sign photos that he has either taken himself or accumulated from random sources.

Nice collection of photos. On the Illinois page there's a US 40 shield in the interstate section, though. :P

I'll gather some photos from Virginia and send them your way.

At this time, I hereby give permission for my photos to be used on the AARoads shield gallery.  But rather than sending pictures that I choose to send over, I am inviting you to go to my Flickr page at http://www.flickr.com/photos/dougtone/ to pick and choose the photos you would like to use for the gallery.  I plan on adding more road and shield photos to my Flickr page as time allows.

WillWeaverRVA

Actually, do you have problems with watermarks? The reason I didn't just give you guys permission to use all my photos is because I was worried about whether you'd want to given that many of my recent photos are watermarked. I've been making the watermarks transparent since November, though.

Of course, like I said I have watermark-free versions if you'd rather use those.

If you have no problems with watermarks, then feel free to use anything you see on http://www.flickr.com/photos/coredesatchikai (shields, signs, etc).

Doug - thanks, we will pillage mercilessly :)

Will - we don't like watermarks; do you have the non-watermarked versions on your flickr anywhere?

I figured you didn't, so I already started gathering them into a folder so I can put them up on Picasa or Photobucket for you to grab. Still working on that, though. :P

Also, like I said, a lot of my photos aren't watermarked, since I didn't start using them until mid-last year. I'll still save you some trouble and put them in the same place for y'all.

Eh, it's not a big deal to me. This Picasa gallery has 35 photos of various shields in it. I have more, but I need to get them off my external hard drive.

Be advised that two of them are from New Jersey! :P

yes.

Well, like I said I don't really mind either way, since I have photos both with and without them. I respect your position (and I actually expected that answer anyway). :P

watermarks are a minimal amount of protection to the photographer (who these days *doesn't* photoshop them out before pirating the image for his own nefarious purposes??) and a major eyesore to the viewer.

and Mississippi is updated.  Every Miss photo we've got, is now up.  Time to move on to the next state ... but I'll do that tomorrow!

Feel free to snag any of the shield images from my Picasa sets for the gallery. (Fair warning - my camera's "date" is stuck on 3/28/2008, but I can tell you the dates on them - just PM me as needed on here.)

I thought it would be easier for you to pillage mercilessly.

added some Montana and a whole lot of North Carolina.  We need more '61 spec North Carolina shields ... we've got a whopping one... NC switched to the larger numbers as early as 1976 as evidenced by a Michael Summa photo from that year.

did a slew of New Jersey, and a bit of Nevada, and started New York.  NY is about half-done right now ...

also check out New Hampshire, Nebraska, and North Dakota, since I've done massive updates to those more recently than I've posted here.

Just noticed an I-81 shield in the State Highway section for PA.
www.aaroads.com/shields/thumbs.php?state=PA

BTW, you guys interested in a picture of possibly the last surviving Virginia I-77 shield with the state name in it that is still in the field?

agentsteel53

yes, yes we are.  didn't know there was a 77 left!

Gonna be pretty hard to "pillage Will mercilessly" since trying to save an image results in saving 'spaceball.gif.' :spin:

Not anymore. :P

The reason they aren't pillaging my Flickr mercilessly is because some of my photos have watermarks on them (they just say "Will Weaver 2008/9", but they're still watermarks). For the most part, that's easily resolved, but I already sent some non-watermarked photos their way (on that Picasa album).

Alright, here's the picture.  You can add it to your gallery as long as you give me credit for it.

The picture was taken on 02/28/07.

agentsteel53, I will also PM you with the exact location in a sec, but I'm not going to post that here in the public so somebody can go steal it since it's quite possibly the last one remaining.

Given what's on the sign, it's not that hard to figure out where it is...

Not totally true Froggie.  You have at least a 15 square mile area you would have to look in.

agentsteel53

just uploaded everything I have for Ohio.  Yesterday I added over 150 California - there's also other odds and ends going up all the time, like I see Alex busy adding Florida keys shields!
