You could have driven NM 501 through LANL unless there has a heightened security level which might cause them to close to non-employees.  But per this webpage - https://www.lanl.gov/resources/security-perimeter.php - you only need a drivers license to be let through.  You would've been subject to random vehicle search, just as you would crossing into Canada.

Most facilities like this will close off public access like this in the aftermath of 9-11, so the fact that NM 501 can still be driven is great.

NC 172 (Camp Lejeune), Fort Belvoir and Quantico MCB closed their through routes to the public long ago.
