It's that time again. A new month, the start of the decline of the year as we slide down the razor blade of the calendar towards Christmas. Wait, did I say that with my public fingers? Anyway, the weather is starting to heat up, the JO is starting to bloom, it is all hazy outside, and it is a wonderful time to get back out on the roads of this great state.

Seriously, here are your headlines for June 2023. Tom and I are recording the last podcast episode of Season 1 today (on the organizations of state highways), and I should edit and post it on July 4. Then I'll be writing Season 2, all about Route 1 and Route 2. Watch for California Highways: Route by Route in your favorite podcatcher application.

Here's the link to the headlines: https://cahighways.org/wordpress/?p=16562

As always: Ready Set Discuss.

Worth noting that 198 west of Coalinga had a pretty quiet reopening this month.  That certainly made my monthly worth commute to Monterey much more enjoyable versus using 152 or 46.

I have yet to use the 'pay-as-you-go' lanes on I-110 (ex Harbor Freeway) into downtown LA.  It is definitely something to consider if/when I make more trips downtown (to LA Union Station - where else).

GN - California SR 214.  I don't recall seeing this route indicated on maps; my 1981 Thomas Guide doesn't call it out.  I do have older maps designating portions of the route as US 91.

Right, because it likely was signed as 91 given it was a placeholder route until the Riverside Freeway was built.  There is a similar phenomenon that occurred through the entire Los Angeles Metro area shortly after the 1964 Renumbering as the freeways were being built.

I wrote too soon.  It does not appear on my 1978 HM Gousha map book, but SR 214 does appear (part of it anyway) on my 1976 Rand McNally atlas. An early 1960s AAA map shows the route multiplexed as US 91/California SR 18, with no mention of 214.

I had never noticed SR 214 before - thx for pointing it out. (And clearly different map publishers used different "sources" to update their maps).
