Of course, this is still a weird hire. BYU just got humiliated by Duquesne in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
I thought Arizona won in 1997. Kentucky did win in the years both before and after that.

As for Dan Hurley not going to the Lakers, good for him. The last thing we need is a Rick Pitino disaster, as the NBA knows by now that hiring college coaches to run a pro team is usually not a good idea.
Go Cubs Go! Go Cubs Go! Hey Chicago, what do you say? The Cubs are gonna win today!

Double his current salary? When's the last time you turned down a 100% raise?

He is apparently getting an upgrade from UConn. And in the NBA coaching marketplace, it's definitely not "a bag." He would have been paid around the top third of coaches.

Either way, the current landscape of college sports and less money wasn't a deterrent to staying put, as I suggested.

But your whole premise, you know the one where you said "I win," is where you compared this circumstance with the Lakers once "throwing a bag" at Coach K.

They simply didn't "throw a bag" at Hurley. They offered him a good salary for an NBA coach, but hardly one that resets the market. And one that UConn likely has agreed to match or come very close to. So money likely wasn't a factor at all because the compensation levels are likely going to be close.

Had the Lakers agreed to pay him like the Warriors pay Kerr, roughly double what the Lakers' apparent offer was, my guess is his answer is different.

He would have been one of the highest paid coaches in the NBA at 11.7 million per year. He currently makes 5.25 million per year at UConn. They aren't doubling him, especially at a non-football power school, there's no money for that.

From what I read this morning, he turned down an additional $20 million. I guess we'll agree to disagree about what constitutes a bag.
