The southern end of I-476 is pretty perpetually congested, but the Northeast Extension is getting better now that it's being widened north towards Allentown.

And the Northeast Extension is considerably more efficient way to get through the Scranton area heading north/south. You could even take it from Dupont to Clarks Summit and there's a pretty strong argument that that qualifies as the most direct route, considering it's a mile shorter than taking I-81 all the way through. The only reason the mileage savings aren't greater is because of the PA-style interchanges required to navigate between the routes, though that will hopefully improve eventually.
