There's some interesting speculation on the UVA forum that Bennett might have decided to time it as a way of ensuring the team stays together this system by avoiding a knee-jerk rush to the transfer portal that might have occurred had he announced it at some other time of year. I wonder what he'll have to say later this morning.

I'm pretty curious about that myself. It's certainly an interesting strategy, given that while the players can bolt for the transfer portal (they have 30 days to do so), with the season only 19 days away, they'd be unable to play until January at the earliest, so they can't really leave.

As a VCU fan, I'm holding my breath a bit. Bennett has more or less set things up so Ron Sanchez will be his interim successor this season, but if he underperforms, I fully expect UVA to go after Ryan Odom hard. It'd be an interesting storyline: Ryan Odom leads UMBC to the biggest NCAA tournament upset ever (at the time), then turns around and coaches the team he beat. Not to mention his father Dave was a longtime assistant at UVA and was part of the 1984 Final Four team.

There was the 1991 event where the singer Tony Bennett made an appearance in Green Bay, where he met the then college basketball player (who we are referring to in this thread) Tony Bennett, and a Packer player Tony Bennett.

He heard Bob Knight's singing voice and decided to get into coaching basketball.

Sounds like both frustration with the direction of college sports (NIL and the transfer portal) combined with family issues. His comments about talking to his wife seem to strongly imply that the all-consuming nature of being a coach was causing marital tension, even if he didn't come straight out and say it in those words.

His father did the same thing - twice.

That's basically what I got from it as well, although the press didn't exactly push him on anything.

Lots of jokes on the Sabre about heading to the Northern Neck to burn down the Tides Inn.

And now, he's leaving his heart in Charlottesville!

(Doesn't have the same ring as that City by the Bay, but I just thought of that one right on the spot)
