I'm in the middle of a 4-day trip around AZ and southern UT. After having driven 22 bridges over water in the Vancouver BC area a couple of months ago, I decided to list all the existing crossings of the Colorado River, and see what I had missed. Between the Mexican border and the Colorado border, I had done all but five. Yesterday, I did three little one-lane bridges between CA and AZ in the ag area south of I-10, and then Aztec Rd between NV and AZ. Today, I drove up to Halls Crossing way up Lake Powell, and took the UT-276 ferry over to Bullfrog.

It was a beautiful ride. The place was nearly deserted; the sky was crystal clear; the air was chilly but dead calm; and I was the only passenger on the ferry. The crew consisted of a bunch of Native American women, at least one of which had brought her toddler girl and a roughly 10-year-old boy. They were late getting started, but that seemed like it was the casual culture. Both ramps had route 276 signs on them with EAST and WEST banners. They should have put a bannered reassurance sign in the middle of the boat, because one end of the boat is always eastbound and the other westbound.

If I'm ever on the western part of Colorado's I-70, I think I'll drop off and do at least some of those crossings. The further upstream you get, the denser they get, since eventually the river is reduced to a stream that even has occasional private driveways going across it. But it could be fun to take it as far as, say, Glenwood Springs.

The Sacramento River is another I'd like to tackle. There are a few bridges downstream of Sacramento I haven't been over. And of course, the Columbia River. Other than the Cathlamet-Westport ferry which I've never been on, I've done all the crossings up to but not including Wenatchee WA, and most of the rest in WA, and a couple way up in BC.

When you've done most of the roads in an area, it's good to find a new game to play.
