Quote from: NWI_Irish96 on June 28, 2024, 03:20:19 PMThe USA's Copa adventure turned bleak really fast. Timothy Weah very stupidly retaliated against a Panama player by smacking him in the head, which got him a straight red card. Panama ended up winning 2-1. Now the US has to beat Uruguay in their final game to advance, and depending on how badly Panama beats Bolivia, they might even have to win by multiple goals.

I'm going to be at the Uruguay game Monday. I am expecting a long night.

I was at the game with Panama Thursday night.  Its the second time I have gone to see the US lose in Atlanta.

1. The game was electric to start - fell into a dull affair.

2. Kansas City is a cool place to hang out for a weekend.

3. The "Arrowhead experience" is less than ideal.

The camera angles during that game last night were higher than the two kids who were smoking weed along the path in our neighborhood yesterday afternoon.

Well, we get England vs. Spain for the Euro finals -- the country I picked to start off and then the country I pivoted to.

They need to offer Klopp a blank check. Give him whatever he wants.

They also need to find a way to have some serious international competition in 2025. I don't know if any European or South American teams have holes in their international calendar where they could put something together.

Almost every international window in 2024 and 2025 are going to be dedicated to either the UEFA Nations League or World Cup Qualification.

There may be some opportunities to play some European teams that don't qualify for Nations League Finals in the Spring of '25. But there are no byes in CONMEBOL qualification.

We don't need to play strong competition, we'll draw Panama and Trinidad+Tobago in 2026 and get a free pass to the knockouts.  :spin:

The Copa America finals in Miami is being stormed by non-ticket holders. Appears to be total chaos there now.

Well, they were down last season and are coming back up, but it looks like they're going to face some point deductions for financial foul play.

The Athletic is reporting that Mauricio Pochettino, most recently of Chelsea, is the new coach of the USMNT.

The most relevant team for Poch to draw on is probably Southampton - a pretty decent side, with limited resources, that he got to be the last challengers to Chelsea for the title that year (then Mane got injured and they started dropping down through the top 6).

Quote from: NWI_Irish96 on August 15, 2024, 04:55:00 PM18 Leicester

Only one H in Southampton. But if we go down, we go down bottom - always do. I'd suggest that Ipswich might do better than Leicester (especially with points deduction), and that Everton are definitely in that fight this year.

QuoteChampionship (promoted to PL):

1 Leeds United
2 Middlesborough
3 West Brom
Middlesbrough (only the one 'o'), and Leeds are unlikely to get automatic promotion as Burnley and Luton are strong contenders. West Brom normally go up in seasons after they reach the play offs, but 3rd won't cut it - they need automatic promotion (they suck at play offs). Plus 3rd place normally fails to win the play offs anyway.

I'd go with the following in the big money stakes 6:
18 Everton (about time!)
19 Leicester (they get enough points for 12th or similar, but have the deduction)
20 Southampton  :-(
---
1 Burnley (not triple-digit points this time)
2 West Brom (just pipping Leeds and Luton)
6 Norwich - sneaking into the play offs on the last day, and taking that momentum on and winning the £100,000,000+ final at Wembley. Getting to play Ipswich, who will just manage to stay up, will also be an extra motivation worth more than the millions or the prestige of Premier League football.

Also managed at Espanyol. Similar "standing" in La Liga.

The super team in Miami is OUT of the MLS Cup playoffs! After winning the Supporters Shield with an MLS record point total, the Lionel Messi lead Inter Miami have fallen to the 9th seeded Atlanta United in a best of 3 first round series.

The 2nd and 3rd seeds in the East also fell (last years Cup and Shield winners Columbus and Cincinnati), so now that side of the bracket is wide open, and will feature a Hudson River derby in the next round. In the West there is the potential for an El Trafico matchup to determine the MLS Cup host, though Bruce's Sounders might have something to say about that.

Bruce

The MLS Cup final is set: LA Galaxy vs. New York Red Bulls.

A battle of two original "flagship" franchises that built suburban stadiums and have lost some of their shine to newer, crosstown rivals in the city proper. Should be an interesting battle, especially now that the Galaxy has lost their playmaker to an ACL tear, which makes the odds much more favorable to the weaker Red Bulls.

The Sounders didn't really expect to be 5 minutes away from hosting the MLS Cup, but god it doesn't help. I feel disappointed (even though we've been spoiled by this run) and either team winning the cup doesn't help soothe me.

The Club World Cup draw has been completed:

Miami gets a really easy group, Seattle gets a tough one. Should be an exciting tournament if the European teams fully commit.

I have a feeling that a lot of top players from European clubs are going to come up with injuries later in the season that will prevent them from playing in this. They've won the last 11 of these things, and 16 out of 17, albiet in a different format. There is zero reason for their participation in this unless they really get paid.

PSG and Atletico as the European clubs in the group aren't too bad looking at their current Champions League placement - it could be worse.

Miami does get an easy group though (host advantage?).
Quote from: SEWIGuy on December 06, 2024, 11:18:47 AMThey've won the last 11 of these things, and 16 out of 17, albiet in a different format.
A format which only meant they had to play two games.

This time they'd have to play 3 in the group stage, and some against teams that aren't worth bothering to try against, and then the knock outs. It's a lot more games.

A big problem with this format is that it's very easy for the non-South American/European teams to all get knocked out in the group stage. The previous format allowed two teams from outside the dominant continents to get to the semis and get a one-shot against a big-name club and get a final. If it basically turns into a rerun of the UEFA Champions League late stages with a couple of South American teams thrown in, then the prestige for European clubs will be even lower than the last few years when it was a bit of winter sun in the Middle East with a couple of games.

The LA Galaxy have won their 6th MLS Cup, extending what was already a league record that they held in that regard. They defeated the New York Red Bulls, who were trying to win their first MLS Cup.

And since Inter Miami won the Supporters shield, there is one change to be made to this list of stats I've updated the past few years:

Of the 29 teams currently in MLS, there have now been:

- 15 teams that have won an MLS Cup
- 14 15 teams that have won a Supporters Shield
- 20 21 teams that have won at least one of the two trophies
- 9 teams that have won both trophies
- 6 teams that have won both in the same season (2 of which have done it twice)

note: the total number of SS winners is actually 16 17, but two of those winners are defunct franchises
