Title: 1955 Jefferson City, MO Bridge Construction.
Post by: Route66Fan on February 07, 2020, 01:06:52 PM
I found this video on YouTube about the construction of the US 54\63 bridge across the Missouri River from 1955.

It's silent & about 39min & 47sec long.

Do you know if there was a bridge at or near that site prior to 1955? Or whether US 54 and US 63 utilized a ferry before the bridge was built?

The old bridge (Which can be seen in the video in the foreground, at about 37:13.) was built in 1896, & demolished in 1955. The old bridge connected Bolivar St. (On the South side of the river.) to Hibernia Rd (On the North side of the river.). This bridge was appearently too low & had to be made rotate on a pillar to allow barges (On the Missouri River.) to pass through.

There was a riverboat landing, located just Northeast of the Missouri state capitol building, that might also been used for ferries.
