QuoteOne of the worst traffic bottlenecks in Johnson County – and in the state of Kansas for that matter – will get some relief thanks to about $14.5 million in federal funds and $1.65 million in funds from Johnson County.

Interstate 35 under the 75th Street bridge in Johnson County will be widened by one lane in each direction, with construction starting in spring of 2020, Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer announced Tuesday.

This project is scheduled to start next March, with bids going out this winter.

QuoteIn March, work should begin to widen I-35 under the 75th Street bridge – which is one of the worst bottlenecks in Johnson County and in the state of Kansas. Metro Engineer Kevin Kellerman, with KDOT, said the state plans to put the $16.5 million project out to bid this winter.

Article from last November talking about Overland Park wanting to expand US69 from I-435 down to 159th Street. Also talks about wish list projects for Lenexa, Olathe, and Gardner. None of these projects have enough funding right now.

https://www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/article221346730.html

QuoteAnyone who has driven U.S. 69 in Overland Park knows rush hour traffic is getting worse and the chance of accidents more prevalent.

In fact, it's the most congested four-lane highway in Kansas, with 80,000 vehicles per day.

So Overland Park leaders are urgently appealing to the state for highway funds to help widen U.S. 69 to six lanes from I-435 south to 159th Street.

Lenexa wants money for a K-10 and Lone Elm Road interchange, along with improvements on I-435. Olathe wants interchange upgrades at I-35 and 119th Street. And Gardner needs help to stop all the accidents near I-35 and Gardner Road.

But those needs collectively amount to hundreds of millions of dollars, in a state that borrowed more than $2 billion from its highway fund during the Brownback administration and must pay that money back. The state projects it will need to spend $600 million annually in the next few years just to cover road preservation and unfinished T-Works projects, which are part of a 10-year Kansas transportation program adopted in 2010.

Have any design drawings/diagrams been released to the public yet?  This is a long-known bottleneck, but there are a few design challenges with respect to widening, such as the retaining wall along I-35 north of 75th Street and its effect on the space needed for an acceleration lane from 75th Street to northbound I-35.

I have very mixed feelings on this, and it is rather irresponsible of the Kansas City Star to fail to mention the long-term effect of road widenings on traffic in the form of induced demand.  There are, however, two locations along this route where certain design interventions would be useful.  On northbound US 69, a third lane joins the mainline from eastbound College Boulevard, but it ends abruptly after the exit to eastbound I-435.  Why not widen the overpass over I-435 to continue that third lane up to the point where the lane from westbound I-435 can then join as the fourth lane (thus having three continuous lanes starting at College Boulevard)?  On southbound US 69, the exit to 135th Street has been problematic for as long as I can remember.  A long-ago lane reconfiguration helped, but I would rather see the middle lane used as an option lane than the current configuration, which forces all exiting traffic into the #3 lane, even though it's a two-lane exit.

And on a final note, if the media is going to talk about the economic effects of transportation projects in Overland Park, then why not mention the proposed bus rapid transit line along Metcalf Avenue?  If you want to talk about "economic engines," Kansas City, Missouri's streetcar is doing quite well, so perhaps the time has come to look at similar mass transit interventions.

There is a factsheet on the KDOT website, but it is pretty stale--enough so that it features former Secretary King:

https://www.ksdot.org/Assets/wwwksdotorg/PDF_Files/I-35MovingForwardFactSheet.pdf

If KDOT still allowed general public access to its FTP server, there would probably be draft plans.

KDOT has replaced the FTP server with a Bentley ProjectWise web service. I found a read-only login to the PW server while browsing the KDOT GIS database.

Indeed, there are preliminary plans for 75th Street loaded in PW. The project number is 35-46 KA-4220-02

This is a late reply, but frankly, rather than going full-steam with a big widening on US 69 in Overland Park, I think it would be helpful to try three things first: (1) on the northbound side, put a freaking ramp meter on the ramp from 119th Street, PLEASE; (2) also on the northbound side, add a thru lane starting from the on-ramp from eastbound College Boulevard and shift the left three lanes about 12 feet to the left, so you have three continuous lanes all the way through the cloverleaf, flowing into the left three lanes at the point where the northbound side suddenly goes from two thru lanes to four; (3) on the southbound side, do SOMETHING about the left entrance from Blue Valley Parkway and the right-hand lane drop at 135th Street.  #3 is the trickiest, because I'm not sure which solution is the best.  I can see problems with what I described above.  Maybe it would be better to to have the lane from Blue Valley Parkway become an added left lane that ends via a taper after about a half-mile, keep the two southbound lanes of US 69 as thru lanes, and have a two-lane exit at 135th Street with an added right lane about a quarter-mile before the exit, and an option lane splitting off at the exit.  (If anyone has a hard time visualizing these ideas, speak up, and I'll take a few minutes to sketch them and post them here.)

These three things would go a long way to relieving the traffic problems on US 69 in Overland Park.  Parts of it will still be congested in rush hour, but it would flow more smoothly.  I'd rather see these three ideas tried before jumping into an even more expensive, large-scale widening that will likely attract more traffic in the long term.

By the way, I drive US 69 through Overland Park very regularly, including in rush hour, so I have a pretty good idea of what I'm talking about.

I'm not saying you don't. I just think that they need to widen it to three lanes along with the projects you mentioned above.

It's here: http://ksdot.org/bureaus/burconsmain/PremPlans3dmodels.asp , but you need a login.  WTF kind of public information is that?

That appears to be another way in to the "Exploratory and Project Reports" database, which you can also access through the project letting page.  The same login credentials work and registration is open.

Given how weak the Kansas Open Records Act is, I am happy we have self-serve access to this information at all, even if a login step is required.  Years ago I corresponded with a KDOT attorney concerning access to scanned as-builts; one of the things I wanted to do was to assemble a comprehensive set of Interstate signing contracts for Kansas from first opening to the present.  I was told that there were too many plans involved even to formulate an estimate of the cost, and that examination in person at KDOT HQ would entail copying the entire tarball to a sterile computer which I would then work with in a locked room while a KDOT employee watched me.  The copying and supervision would be my financial responsibility (at a cost of probably $25 per employee hour), and since the computer would have its USB ports disabled to prevent file copying, any copies I wanted would involve charges for copy media and staff mediation.  Online access to the as-builts with publicly accessible login credentials--which is what we have now with the ProjectWise Web interface--makes all of that unnecessary.

If those login credentials are publicly accessible, I guess I just need to find them.  I've been so busy, it's like, sometimes I have time to look things up, and other times it's like, "Wait, I wanted to look all these things up, but I got busy and forgot about them, and now I wish I knew all that stuff."

I can only hope that the new gore signage at I-135 SB @ 13th Street isn't supposed to be permanent.

This is what used to be there until very recently.  Now, instead of saying "EXIT 8", it says "13th St".  No mention of the exit number.

I realized, but forgot to post on here, that this must be temporary signage:  the overhead sign gantry was removed, and without it there would be no mention of the street name at the point of exit–if it weren't for this strange gore sign.

The listings for December have been updated with the approved bids. There were also two bids from November that were announce with the December awards.

Clarkson was the winning bidder on the I-35/75th Street project, at just shy of $13 million. Clarkson had recently wrapped up the rebuilding of 435 between Quivira and Metcalf, and was also the lead partner on the Johnson County Gateway project, so they're no stranger to major KC metro projects.

Quote from: KDOT
LARRY THOMPSON, P.E., KDOT DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS, HAS DETERMINED THAT DUE TO RECENT CHANGES IN U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR PREVAILING WAGE RATES, THE FEBRUARY 19, 2020 KDOT LETTING IS CANCELLED AND KDOT WILL RE-ADVERTISE THESE PROJECTS IN THE KANSAS REGISTER AND INCLUDE THESE PROJECTS IN THE MARCH 25, 2020 KDOT LETTING.
None of the bids have or will be downloaded. We apologize for the last minute decision, but we felt to be fair to all we should cancel February 19, 2020 Letting. We are sorry for the inconvenience this has caused.

Erase the bids please. Contractors: Please re-submit your bids taking into account the new cost of labor.

Although the above announcement indicate that they would simply bump the February projects into the regular March letting (scheduled for the 25th), it appears that they are going to have a "special" letting on March 10, and only those who had previously registered for the February letting will be eligible to submit new bids.
Peace to you, and... don't drive like my brother.
