The bypass around the Village of Round Lake, NY, connecting Northway Exit 11 to US 9 and NY 67 is scheduled to open today:

Is this a Super 2 or a four lane bypass?

They seem to have gotten it done quickly...from the EIS to the opening date.
I only take pics of good looking signs. Long live non-reflective button copy!

It's a super 2. With roundabouts on either end.

Is this super 2 really neccessary? Is Round Lake, NY that busy? I am not farmiliar with the town but from overhead, it doesn't look crowded. Anyone have a map of it? I'd like to check it out!

It's not terribly busy but for two things:
1) The town is getting through traffic, including trucks, going right through the middle.  Not a great quality of life there.
2) Development on the north side will generate a lot more traffic, especially trucks.

So it's not a volume issue so much as a truck issue.

Took the bypass yesterday on my way north.  Noticed the lack of reference markers along the route (perhaps they just haven't been installed yet).  It's signed as "TO US 9/NY 67" or "TO I-87 SOUTH", depending on your direction, but signed as such only at the roundabouts.

The construction of the Round Lake Bypass was indeed a requirement for the construction of a computer chip factory that is being constructed in nearby Malta.  So while Round Lake itself may not have much traffic, expected growth in the near future, especially with truck traffic, has made the Round Lake Bypass necessary.

When I was still living in Albany, I had a conversation with someone working for New York State who had a hand in negotiating the deal that would bring in the chip fab plant.  He said that with the construction of the chip fab plant and other technology plants, a sort of domino effect of growth would occur, since these plants would want their suppliers "right over the fence".  These plants require a lot of gas and chemical suppliers, which need to be put right next door, etc.  So, truck traffic in the area is expected to increase by quite a bit.

The construction of the Malta roundabouts on NY 67 is also a by-product of this factory.

I was on the Northway (I-87) in the Round Lake area today, and it's (to me) notable that there is no mention at all of the Round Lake Bypass on the Northway. Where exactly is the bypass located. Does it connect to the pre-existing I-87 Round Lake exit?

Round Lake Bypass still has no reference markers
And if they are put up, they will depict NY 915J

The Round Lake Bypass is just off of Northway Exit 11 in Round Lake.  Its west/south terminus is just east of the Northway exit, and it bypasses the Village of Round Lake to the west and north, with its other end being where US 9 and NY 67 intersect.

Original plans, at least what I was told anyway, was that there was to be a new ramp built connecting the Northway northbound to the new bypass. And if there was any surprise, this didn't happen.

There are also still rumors around that there will be a new exit built between exits 11 and 12 for the new AMD chip plant. We'll see if that ever happens too.
