The last Texas 1 was decommissioned in 1952 in favor of US 80B.  The original Texas 1 ran from Texarkana to El Paso, largely along US 67 and 80.  Why can only the executive director or the transportation commission apply this number?

From US 183 northwest of Eastland southeastward via Eastland to IH 20, a distance of approximately 10.8 miles.  (Eastland County)  New description; as requested by District, section of approx. 1.8 miles added from SH 6 eastward to IH 20.


Adm. Auth., dated 09/14/1992; Adm. Ltr. 003-1992, dated 09/14/1992
Cancelled.  (Eastland County)  As requested by District, this mileage transferred to SH 112.  (This is due to numerous thefts of the popular SH 69 signs.)

Why can only the executive director or the transportation commission apply this number?

Presumably because with a state highway system as vast as Texas's, the number "1" should be reserved for something pretty damn special. They don't want some district engineer grabbing it for some six mile ranch access road in Cowturdia County.

I have heard, but never found a legit source to verify, that OK-1 was numbered as such due to its scenic nature.

I read that on Wikipedia but I don't buy it because OK 1 isn't scenic for its entire length and the whole idea sounds silly.

For some reason this says old US 1. There was a discussion about this on MTR a couple years ago

Ontario has a similar policy, or it may be that route 1 cannot be assigned at all.

so Ontario 2 became the major route!

Was it?  I assumed that the original Texas 1 followed the route of mainline US 80 west of Dallas as opposed to following what became Business US 80.

I'm not sure. These maps are both labeled 1936, but one shows no state number for the US 80 cutoff, and the other shows SH 1B on post-1939 1.

(other differences: 14 vs. 289 north of downtown, 40 By-pass on Loop 12; perhaps the former is actually post-1939 but they forgot to remove the redundant numbers)

The "BYPASS 40" is interesting. Don't think i've ever heard of it before. Also notice that it is not shown on SH 114 (the portion that is now LOOP 12 /Northwest Hwy), even though it wouuld have logically have to been co-signed there.
