Life in Paradise

I wonder how much it cost to put in all of those tunnels.  Can you imagine an American interstate cutting into mountains rather than going around from one to another (Example I-79 in West Virginia)?

The U.S. is a bit of an outlier with its lack of tunnels in mountainous areas. Tunnels are the norm in any mountainous area in Europe or Asia. Korea is very mountainous, there is often no point to go around mountains as you would run into the next mountain. Like Japan, most of the flatter areas in South Korea are urbanized so acquiring a right-of-way through urbanized areas is expensive and intrusive.
