When I drove through a month and a half ago, the completed widened freeway segments were great and the "new" CA 180 interchange very impressive. 

Further north, approaching Chowchilla, the CA 152 interchange remains untouched as well as the low clearance and poorly aligned railway underpass.  That is a project calling out for attention.

The 2005 report called for more rest stops, which could also be of benefit.

That interchange south of Chowchilla still has Califa Rail Subway (built in 1930) as part of the northbound lanes.

Conversely, the single southbound bypass lane on the elevated Merced viaduct is a fatality waiting to happen. It's narrow as hell and everyone wants to ride your rear end going through it. They can't get that project done soon enough as far as I'm concerned.
